Ghostbusters' Ecto 1 For Sale -- A Bargain At $150,000
Filed under: Classics, Comedy, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, MGM, Sony, ThinkFilm, Fandom
It's been awhile since my last shout out to our friends at Autoblog. If you love movies and cars or simply movie cars, you should check them out regularly, as they occasionally point out when vehicles from classic films are up for sale or auction. The latest bit of cinephilia automobilia memorabilia they've come across is the Ecto-1 from Ghostbusters. Just think of how cool you'd be driving down the street in this converted 1959 ambulance. And it will only set you back about $150,000.But according to Aint it Cool News, you aren't just paying for the car from Ghostbusters; the vehicle was also featured in In the Heat of the Night. Plus it has all new interiors and rebuilt mechanics. Sure, that means you probably won't be sitting on the exact seats that Dan Aykroyd and the others sat on, but at least it might be more comfortable to ride around in. Of course, the true fan doesn't need comfortability. He or she might even prefer the car needed, "some suspension work and shocks. Brakes, brake pads, lining, steering box, transmission, rear-end. Also new rings, mufflers, a little wiring," and for it to cost only $4800 (though this would be for the car as it looked prior to becoming the Ecto-1, so who would want that?) If you can't afford it, I'm sure these guys are interested in purchasing the car. Their fake Ecto-1 was apparently totaled on New Year's Eve.

The car for sale is NOT the original Ecto 1! The one in the movie was a 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteor combination (hearse/ambulance), the one for sale is a 1959 Cadillac Eureka combo. It may have been in Heat of the Night, but this car was assuredly NOT in Ghostbusters or Ghostbusters 2.

Thanks for the informations Matt. How did you know that? Well it sure do look like the car in the movie, based on the picture that is shown here, though we also should think that this car might be a replica of the original car that was seen in the movie...

I just wanted to add to an earlier comment. This one for sale is most definately NOT the original from the first or second movie. ECTO 1 is currently (and always has been) owned by Sony, who are currently restoring it after years of neglect. ECTO 1A, which is an entirely different car from ECTO 1, is also owned and operated by Sony but lives a much more pampered life on the Universal Studios lot in California, and has been on display on and off since the film was made. I believe from other sources that Sony occasionly move it to the Florida park for special events. Although it has led a better retirement than ECTO 1 it has still had it's fair share of mistreatment. Sony do not take car of either of these cars (the rust bucket cadillac seen in the first few minutes of Ghostbusters was an entirely different car that Sony did not hold onto, it was bought entirley for the sequence you see on the screen and was promptly got rid of afterwards) unless there is sufficiant public demand, which there has been recently, ECTO 1A has been lokked after better because it is on regular display USC, whereas ECTO 1 sits in the Sony backlot gathering dust and rust.

you are very right this is not the original and george barris sure as hell did not design it. I think the one on display is rather handsome for a remake but not good enough to urn $150,000.00 a rather decreased but worthy value of $50,000 sounds a whole lot better.
