George Lucas: Empire Was the Worst Star Wars Film!
Filed under: Action, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, RumorMonger, Celebrities and Controversy, Fandom, Scripts, George Lucas, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels
On Wednesday of this week, entertainment blogger David Poland threw up a rather perfunctory account of the Publicist's Guild luncheon: "I kinda like this particular high-school event. There is no pressure on me to report. I am comfortable knowing that this is a group that will never nominate me for their journalistic award." But pressure or no, he did report one item of interest, two days late. Yesterday afternoon, Poland tossed in an update on the lunch that he forgot to dole out originally: "George Lucas, giving the award to Sid Ganis, who was the in-house publicist on Star Wars: Episode Five - The Empire Strikes Back, said, 'Sid is the reason why The Empire Strikes Back is always written about as the best of the films, when it actually was the worst one.'"
Wow. Is there anyone besides Lucas who actually believes this? I think that even if you have a personal animosity against the Yoda character or you think the original film should have spun its sequels in a completely different direction, you have to accept that Empire has superior writing and plotting, not only in comparison to those damn prequels, but probably in comparison to New Hope and Jedi too.

Perhaps Georgie still harbors a little resentment over the fact that one of the series he didn't direct is considered the cream of the crop.

Poland took it completely out of context.

Maybe he felt that way because it did not spawn any cute and cuddly collectibles like ewoks or Jar Jar binks. This was the strongest movie of the series, and the darkest. I hated 1 and 6 for the same reason, the cute and distracting sidekicks. I hate the Ewoks with a passion, and jar Jar served no purpose.

This confirms it. Lucas has no talent or sense of taste whatsoever.

I think George is right. I don't believe George ever had plans for Star Wars to be a trilogy. I think the super success of Star Wars took everone by surprise. Compelled to make a sequel they created The Empire Strikes back which was only a place holder. Return of the Jedi was the original Star Wars only better looking.
The last 3 sequels should have never been made.

Actually, I've said the same thing all of my life. I found Empire to be very boring. It moved too slowly to make up for the big reveal at the end.

George is officially a MORON! I just hope he NEVER makes another movie. Then, when he dies and someone else gets the rights some really good Star Wars movies can be made! Maybe Spielberg or some other great director can pick up the rights. Maybe they will be nice and kill Jar Jar in a very painful way. Or better yet, let the creature from aliens insimenate him! Hah!
On another note and since George Lucas supposedly supports spyware, my new passion is defeating it! http://www.my-pc-help.com/video/v10017.htm Make sure grandma watches it and anyone else who needs to learn about the issues with spyware.

Aren't all the star wars movies a bit overrated though? The character's personalities are underdeveloped, the cartoony action is too far out to make the audience believe there will be any real consequences to this "galactic civil war," and the psuedo-new age spiritualism got more absurd with each new installment.
Lucas himself doesn't understand it's appeal (as witnessed by the less enthusiastic prequels that he exercized more control over). He just knows he's made a fortune from the licencing and toy sales.

No way. Episodes I, II and III are worse, specially Episode I (terrible). Empire is the best of the saga! Lucas is just jealous, because he was not the director of Empire, and it is considered the best of all six movies.

The real problem is that George Lucas doesn't have a clue about telling a story through film. He got lucky with The Original Star Wars Trilogy which turned out to be genius. However - The Prequels may have forever crapped on their legacy. Even when you listen to the director commentary on the originals you can get a glimpse of how crappy some of Lucas' original ideas where but other people working with him had the sense to say, "No, that just won't work."
