Box Office Roundup: Norbit? Really?
Filed under: Box Office, Hold the 'Fone
Happy midday Monday, all. I have to say, little disappointed in this weekend's box office results. 'Norbit' making $33 million? Seriously? Who has nothing better to do on a weekend than spend two-plus hours (what with getting to the cineplex, standing in line for popcorn and then finding a seat in the -- apparently crowded -- theater) on 'Norbit'? And it's not like the trailers or any clips that I've seen make it look like it's going to be good. And OK, I haven't seen it, so I can't swear that it's, um, not worth your two hours on a weekend, but based on the previews I've seen and the reviews I've read and the word of mouth I've heard (from the one person I know who's seen it, she works next to me, but for AOL TV), I'd be willing to bet the farm that this is not Murphy's finest hour and a half.
In short, 'Norbit' made a lot of moolah. Here's what Patricia predicted Friday:
And here's the actual weekend top five:
- Norbit - $33.7 million (!)
- Hannibal Rising - $13.35 million
- Because I Said So - $9 million
- The Messengers - $7.2 million
- Night at the Museum - $5.75 million
Get the full box-office report here.
I know Patricia contemplated leaving 'Night at the Museum' in her top 5, but just couldn't believe it would hold onto that spot AGAIN. Whoops. But the box-office-prediction playas rocked it this week: There was a three-way tie for second place and a six-way tie for fourth place. Whoa. Very sweet, guys.
So, while all us pundits (such as Patricia, in this post last week) gave Eddie Murphy a hard time for following up his Oscar-nominated turn in 'Dreamgirls' with the decidedly non-award-worthy 'Norbit' (unless you count MTV Movie Awards -- does he have any good kisses with himself? the MTV crowd eats that sh** up), Murphy will be licking his wounds and feeling sorry for himself all the way to the bank ...
Here are the results from this weekend's predictions. The winner is .... ding-ding-ding ... Brody, who got every one of them suckas right (and was third last week)! And thanks to everyone, as always, for playing along. Have a great week. And if you saw 'Norbit' this weekend -- I'm sorry. Not sorry about all the disses I've sent 'Norbit's way, just sorry that you saw it.
1. Brody - 16
2. Mr. PKI - 13
2. Chris - 13
2. Liesse00 - 13
3. Bostons Leppard - 11
4. Bubba8193 - 9
4. Tangoeco - 9
4. Mario - 9
4. Dickens - 9
4. Isaac - 9

I've been thinking the same thing about "Night at the Museum" for weeks now. $232 mil. in 8 weeks -- and still holding the No. 5 spot at the box office?!? It's the epitome of mediocrity, but it will remain one of the more succeessful movies of the last few years.

i've only seen two decent films lately:
Children of Men
Norbit
I found Norbit quite funny and reveled in murphy's Mr. Wong character. Comedy gold in that character. Not sure what critics had against it. Maybe they were bothered by the jokes aimed at Rasputia. Oh, boo-hoo, they made fun of an evil character.

anyways...I saw 'Norbit' and it wasn't out of this world but it was funny
I also saw 'Hannibal Rising' which wasn't too bad but wasn't out of this world either

Well, I took my two kids to see Norbit, who both seemed to enjoy it. I however as a parent i thought that the humor was too crasp, and the foul language unnecessary. Many people brought small children to the film which was totallly inappropriate. I have a 13 and 18 year old and I was embarressed to have them hearing some of the references like "titty bar". And seeing one characters naked backside was really out of place it was more of a shock than funny. I sat there wondering what was coming next. I
Would not recommend this film to anyone. I especially
would not recommend it to anyone considering bringing small children. Though Eddie is very talented, he went overboard this time. I would like to see how well it does next weekend after the word gets out.

"Night at Museum" is helped by screenings on IMAX screens. I'm sure the museum theme plays great in museums that have IMAX theaters.

Pretty disgusting that this film made such a ridiculous amount of money. I wrote something about this phenomenon myself...
