James Van Der Beek Goes to War
Filed under: Action, Drama, Horror, Casting, Newsstand
According to Production Weekly, James Van Der Beek, wanna-be filmmaker Dawson Leery from TV's Dawson's Creek and the films Varsity Blues and the upcoming Punchy, is still trying to find his way post-Dawson into more adult roles. To help facilitate this transition, Van Der Beek has agreed to star as a soldier in Finnish director Marko Makilaakso's latest film Stone's War.The film, formally known as War of the Dead and also written by Makilaakso, follows Van Der Beek's Captain Martin Stone as he leads an elite group of American and Finnish soldiers in an attack against a secluded enemy bunker deep in Russia. Unfortunately, the soldiers underestimate the strength of their enemy and soon are forced to retreat deeper into the forest surrounding the bunker to seek shelter and regroup before the next attack. Then, during the next attack, the soldiers are confronted with a new horror and discover a dark secret forcing them to question the very nature of life itself.
You might be able to guess from the description that the soldiers Van Der Beek's team is fighting might turn out to be the kind that don't really stay dead when you kill them. They could be zombies or maybe some sort of other creature that likes to eat human flesh. And as fun as zombie movies can be, I feel like I've seen this film somewhere before -- maybe a few dozen other times. Still, familiarity isn't necessarily a bad thing and perhaps this time Van Der Beek will be able to pull off the adult role he's been searching for and finally put Dawson behind him. Principal photography on Stone's War begins April 2nd in Lithuania.

People take things too seriously. So what if the title may be a bit misleading? Isn't that the point of a title,to capture the attention of an audience? People need to get over themselves and quit trying to make a big deal out of something minor. I think its awesome that James is going to be featured in this film. It sounds interesting.

He was just on Criminal Intent playing a really creepy killer with more than one personality. He was awsomely disturbing in the role.

True, titles are supposed to capture the attention of an audience, but when it's as deceptive as this, it's tabloid style. I've noticed that AOL is stooping to tabloid level with increasing frequency, and not just in their entertainment section. I wish they'd raise their standards.

I agree the title was misleading. It is tabloid-like... Reserve the honor and respect that the emotions of those that do off to war get.

This is just another overpaid actor going to work,
not going to war. Please don't confuse the two. JJ

It was misleading and sensationlistic, but it's a headline, not a title. Books, movies and poems have titles. Articles have headlines.

The title made me think that James was going over to Iraq - very misleading. He was most recently on "Criminal Minds" as the guy with multiple personalities - very unlike Dawson Leery. I think he did a good job.

I knew it was going to be "goes to war" IN A MOVIE! It's the same kind of crap they pull on Entertainment Tonight. They'll say, "So and So in tears over the death of a loved one!!!" and lead you to believe that something tragic has happened, then they come back from the commercial and you find that So and So is in tears in his new movie about the death of a loved one. It's a tacky way to get people to stay tuned or to read you article. People should really know better than to fall for it.
