The role of Harvey 'Two-Face' Dent in The Dark Knight will be played by Aaron Eckhart, the trades reported late yesterday, although no formal announcement has been released. Eckhart joins Heath Ledger as the film's main villain, The Clown Prince of Crime, as well as returning players Gary Oldman, Michael Caine and Christian Bale. No word yet on whether Morgan Freeman will be reprising his role as the Q-like tech whiz Lucius Fox. Eckhart, most known for his collaborations with Neil LaBute and for recent films like Thank You for Smoking and The Black Dahlia, will presumably report to work soon, as the film is gearing up production.
The comic character, which dates back to 1942, is a criminal defense attorney who gets a face full of acid and deteriorates into a crime lord known as Two-Face who decides whether to do good or evil based on each random flip of a coin. He was previously played by Billy Dee Williams in Tim Burton's Batman and, in full-villain regalia by Tommy Lee Jones in the down-market sequel Batman Forever. Eckhart's casting leaves at least one major role unfilled -- Batman's love interest. The rumor mill is tilting as strongly as possible towards Maggie Gyllenhaal to take on the role of Rachel Dawes, formerly played by Katie Holmes. Other potential female roles that could require casting include Selena Kyle, a.k.a. Catwoman, Talia al Ghul, Harley Quinn, or another new love interest character that's as yet undisclosed. Eckhart's next role will be the romantic dramady No Reservations, co-starring Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Why exactly does Batman/Bruce Wayne ALWAYS seem to need a love interest in any Batman film? I don't get it.
On this casting news? Awesome indeed. Might just make up for the fact that Chris Eccleston was passed over for the Joker.

Great news, thanks for the post! Aaron would make a great 2 face. Another person that would make a better one, in my personal opinion, would be Adrian Pasdar (aka fly-boy Nathan Petrelli from heroes). Adrian already has a scar on his face, so he would need less makeup. :P

Aaron is good, but I'm really curious why Nolan/Warner Bros. passed up on fan-favorite Liev Schreiber for the role of Harvey Dent. For the 10 people who saw *The Black Dahlia*, this role might be too similar to what Aaron has already done.
Just as its been proven by the dismissal of Joss Whedon from *Wonder Woman* and JJ Abrams from *Star Trek 11* in recent days, it is still not too late to recast for the role of The Joker. Give Ledger a few other WB films to star in, but get Christopher Eccleston for this role pronto. Hopefully, his "Hollywoodness" has been greatly improved lately, first having been so good in *Doctor Who* and now on NBC's *Heroes*.
I'd love to see Harley Quinn and Talia Al Ghul appear in the next couple of Batflicks. I would still love to see Kate Winslett in the role, or even a fanboy favorite pairing of Billie Piper in the role next to an Eccleston Joker. A few years ago, I would have suggested Fairuza Balk. Heck, Jolene Blaylock or Jemima Rooper might work too.
Talia Al Ghul should go to a very glamorous actress. A Monica Bellucci, Angelina Jolie, Catherine Zeta-Jones, or the original studio pick, Rachel Weiz. I'm still partial to Bellucci, although the studio might make an issue about her age.
As for Selina Kyle/Catwoman re-appearing, I'm firm on Rosario Dawson for the role. However, I think it best to wait for the third film to bring the character back so we can put more distance between it and the inept Halle Berry film.
Morgan Freeman and Sir Michael Cain better return...

The reason Batman has to have a love interest in every movie is because Hollywood has no originality so they make every movie with a love interest, irregardless of whether or not it has anything to do with the story, which it usually doesn't. Just like the feel the need to make the first villain in the franchise have something to do with the Wayne's murder to make everything come full circle, which always seems forced.
I agree with you, Batman is not a romantic lead character. His alter ego disguise is a playboy, he should have at least two superficial relationships ever movie. But the would break the Hollywood mold to movie making. The rare romantic relationship The Batman does have aren't very successful. Selina and Talia are the strongest case but neither of those has gone anywhere but in circles.
There is really no reason to force a romance in to what is a action/mystery character. Superman, Spider-man, lead themselves better to a romantic background story since each has a long time love interest that you can build a subplot around. Every story doesn't involve romance. Some do, some don't.
