Justice League Movie Officially Kickstarted
Filed under: Action, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Warner Brothers, Scripts, Comic/Superhero/Geek
While Warner Bros. continues to be slow with comic adaptations of Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Green Lantern and The Flash, it has decided to go ahead with a Justice League of America movie, which could feature all four of these characters as well as Batman and Superman. The studio has officially gotten the project started by hiring the married writing duo Kieran and Michele Mulroney (Mr. & Mrs. Smith; the upcoming Mirrors) to come up with a first draft. The idea of a Justice League movie is both exciting and difficult to imagine because it would consist of more superhero star power than audiences are used to (Marvel has a similar idea going on with a possible Avengers movie). One big question sure to be driving DC Comics fans mad is will Batman and Superman appear in the contexts of their respective franchises, or in other words will they be played by Christian Bale and Brandon Routh? Maybe Warner Bros. is even thinking of doing the JLA movie in order to launch the franchises for the other four characters (so far we've seen no love for Martian Manhunter at the studio).
My guess is the WB is hoping for a 2010 release, following The Dark Knight in 2008 and Superman: The Man of Steel in 2009. Then, they will get to the spin-offs. And eventually, I'm hoping, there will be some sort of crossover movie that pits the JLA against The Avengers. See, I just can't ever be satisfied. As long as the studios keep producing my dream comic book adaptations, I will have to keep coming up with bigger dreams.

It's long overdue. I hope Wonder Woman won't be protraid like the 70's TV Show. The current comic book version should be used!

It's too soon for a JLA movie. The story needs to be built up to make it work right.
Batman and Superman founded the JLA, so they need to meet in a previous story line, the rumored Batman vs. Superman would work good for that.
Wonder Woman needs her own movie as do GL and Flash, possibly even Martian Manhunter and Hawkgirl. Just to get the origins out of the way for the younger generations who may not know who they are or why.
Next they need to create the idea of the JLA and maybe make the movies all work together, otherwise you're looking at a four hour movie just to get the origins, and backgrounds described, then to provide a decent story you need time to get them all together and get them to agree to work together.
There's no reason not to postpone the JLA movie and build up to it through the other movies, especially since if you want it to be worth watching you need to keep the same actors/actresses in JLA as are in the other movies.
Finally you need a really good script which I would suggest involves a major villain, but no one too powerful. (i.e. Save Dark Siede for the third movie).
If it's done right and done for the story, instead of the big money. They can make it an epic sequel and make a lasting legacy instead of a bunch of movies that will be forgotten in a couple years.

I agree that Tom Welling from smallville would be best to cast for superman. He has done a great job as Clark Kent and this is most likely the last season for smallville. I think this movie could be huge if done right and this would be the best direction

I enjoy the banter in X-Men and Fantastic 4.. but not sure the DC characters would work together in the same way
Whether the jokey humour you see between Wolverine and Cyclops, or Human Torch and The Thing, or the same brand of humour you get when Spider-Man ridicules his foes, or the humourous aspects in the Iron Man movie are part of the Marvel style or not I don't know.. but to me it helps along the way.. and if JL goes up against the Avengers movie in 2010/2011.. a big part of the equation will be down to how well the indivicual characters are written, how they all inter-act, and how well this is all acted (including villain(s)).. as well as the thrill and suspense of the rollercoaster ride
Whether it's even needed or would work I don't know
Excellent and educational points by others in this thread by the way, sounds like an incredible range of ideas they could use for this movie going on what's been posted.. the god destroying force thing sounds amazing

please don't make it unless it have the fire power. casting a bunch of unknown actors to play batman, superman and wonderwoman is a slap in the face of their respective history. cast big stars or the people who actually play these characters.
SUPERMAN- tom welling:
BATMAN- Christian Bale:
GREEN LANTERN- Will Smith:
MARTIAN MANHUNTER- Vin Diesel:
WONDER WOMAN- Kate Beckinsale:
FLASH- Ryan Reynolds:
HAWKGIRL- Zooey Deschanel:
this should be the cast. not a bunch of "actors" who can't act and never really done anything like this. and the story better be good and epic. not like Fantastic 4 facing dr. doom in a weak ass final fight in the 1st one. i mean that was horrible. in simple form, if you are not gonna do it right. then save the money don't touch the shits and get the fuck out.

The big screen adaptations of both JLA and Avengers are coming and we'll see how well the studios and audiences handle it. I would look to the current Smallville storyline and Heroes as justification for both films. Sans the costumes, no problems having multiple people with abilities come together. And need I say X-Men? So why this would be a problem is a mystery. It all comes down to the basic priniciples of sound writing, directing, effects and just enough suspension of disbelief. The XMen flicks accomplished this by forgoing the spandex for a more common sense leather look. No can do for DC Universe. The costumes of the JLA members are iconic and can't be messed with. So it will come down to who they put into the suits. I'd much rather see a "Kingdom Come" type of storyline set further in the future of the group instead of the studio falling into the trap of the first film establish the origin and second film gets into the action. Anyway, I'm rambling.

Jonathan has some good points. It doesn't HAVE to be a disaster if the right people work on it. Unfortunately, I just don't have that much faith in the powers that be at Warners.

Animated versions for the League have worked welland there is a in-the-works feature length project (namely the Superman's Death saga). "Smallville" is toying with a real image League. I suppose it all falls into finding an appealing script that takes into account the abilities and differing power levels of the team: something that Wonder Woman and Superman tackle with is not "a job for Batman and Aquaman", but they should have they share of importance. Grant Morrison has developed good storylines that balance the team.

The most important thing to consider with the JLA is not the plausibility of the scenario, but the sense of the incredible that you should get from such a team. It's not about comparing what's happening to real-world scenarios (i.e., X-Men as a critique of discrimination against minorities). Instead, it's about believing that, if the job is too big for one person - even a super person - there are others out there who can back you up.
If they wanted to seriously make a respectable franchise out of JLA without dragging down the individual character franchises in the process, I'd consult "JLA: Year One." The core of the whole story is how strained it can be working with people you don't know if you can trust.

WOW! this is the 1st time I've heard mention of these movies. I wonder who they will get to play the hero's? I didn't mind Christian Bale as BatMan but the current Superman is a total disappoitment for me. Who would they get to play Wonder Woman? Will the Green Arrow make any appearance? Who can forget Hawkgirl is she going to make an appearance? if so would would play her?

I agree the storyline has to be BIG. A few years back there was a JLA storyline regarding a thing called Mageddon. It was a giant evil planet thingy that extruded creatures/warriors/armies from it’s very material. As it approached, it drove the populace of a world mad inciting global wars. When it arrived, it would reveal itself and finish a world off. It was created by a race of gods to destroy another race of gods. With a few tweaks it could be used a movie story line, and instead of just another JLA adventure, it could be the threat that causes the JL to form in the 1st place. Basically it could be wandering the Universe taking out planets it saw as being populated by “gods”. This could bring in Wonder Woman (where did her gods go anyway) Aquaman (where did Atlantis come from anyway) and, with a little tweaking, the Green Lanterns (why do the Guardians work in the background and send OUT a police force of lesser beings anyway). As it approaches, the world starts to go mad. The heroes have to pull the world away from the brink. Finally when Mageddon shows up, not only has the world NOT destroyed itself, but every military (which has been on high alert, but kept from all out war by the superheroes) is mobilized. It’s not just a war of the heroes against Mageddon, but every single military unit on the globe, unified behind the superheroes. Think of this on a teaser. There was a phrase used in the Mageddon storyline “Prepare the Armies of Man”. I think that would look great on a poster. Or how about “Sometimes it takes more than one hero to save the day. Sometimes it takes ALL of them.”

This movie could be really cool, but I would need the JLA to be fighting with the LOD. Then they would have to cast a lot of good or big name actors, have a good script, and either use the cast from Smallville or the current big screen casts.

For anyone concerned about possible story/plot? One word: DARKSEID! There's a villain that it plausibly takes the entire League to defeat, yet the fight isn't one from which Batman, Aquaman, or Green Arrow would need to hide.

I would hope that in the Justice League movie, they don't muck it up like they did in Fantastic 4,The Return of the Silver Surfer, that was a joke.In all of comicdom, this was truly a waste. The whole story line was funny, and it did not adhere to the legend of the Surfer. To even try to make believe that The Human Torch was even remotely capable of competing with the Surfer was a travasty. The Surfer weilds more power in one finger than the Human Torch could muster in 1000 lifetimes. And what was that cloud that was suppose to represent Galactus!!!!!!,Please!!!!,he looked more like a upper atmospheric disturbance....Galactus is a being of immense power, here he was likened unto some Grade B mist from the old "Star Trek" series in the 70's.Furthermore if you are going to make a JLA movie without Batman, then you have grossly errored.Did not Bruce Wayne's money build their state of the art space station??.Batman is the balance between all of them, because despite not having any superpowers,Batman is the one who can look at suituations with his skills of being the World's Greatest Detective, and get the job done, the team needs him....on the other hand,if you have Martian Manhunter,Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern,hell....you don't need Superman...Wonder Woman pound for pound is just as strong as Superman.....in fact in one issue of Superman...she kicked his ass......

WB should build on what it already started in SMALLVILLE! this is probably the final season and they have a CORE set up for the Justice League already...all they need is Wonder Woman and Batman. actually i thought they had Wonder Woman kinda of set up in one of their previous episodes but chose that character to be more of a vigilante. They can move forward in the plot and make Tom Welling more of a Superman than a Superboy. they have the original characters in place..Green Arrow, Aquaman, Flash (however the Cyborg character, i dont get)
finding a Wonder Woman and a Batman cant be that hard (two quick names Eliza Dushku, Faith from Buffy the Vampire Slayer..and Joshn Duhamel from Transformers and the tv show LAS VEGAS). and you already have LEX LUTHOR as a bad guy in Michael Rosenbaum. BUILD ON THAT, AND THE FANS WILL COME!!

I think that the WB should use Smallville as the ground work for the JLA movie there has been so much time and effort put into the show that i think it deserves a huge finish. I believe the people would go see it and i garentee that every single smallville fan would go see it.

The Marvel Movies have covered many more superheroes than DC. DC have only yet made film adaptions of Batman and Superman whereas Marvel have done, Spidey, X-Men, Fantastic 4, Hulk, Punisher, Blade, Ghostrider, Daredevil, Electra.and others and they still have Iron Man, Thor and Captain America to comein The near Future. Stan Lee is a Legend
But for the JLA (Justice League of America) Movie these are the actors/actresses who should play the 7 members of team.
SUPERMAN- Brandon Routh: (for obvious reasons)
BATMAN- Christian Bale: (again for obvious reasons)
GREEN LANTERN- Will Smith: (he'd be great, yeah!)
MARTIAN MANHUNTER- Vin Diesel: (The Look and Voice)
WONDER WOMAN- Kate Beckinsale: (she looks like her)
FLASH- Ryan Reynolds: (you have to pick him, right)
HAWKGIRL- Zooey Deschanel: ( because she looks the part)
what do you guys think???
