Oscar Fashion Wishes: From Jeffrey With Love
Filed under: Awards, Oscar Watch, Hold the 'Fone, Speak No Evil by Jeffrey Sebelia
The Oscars are coming!!! The Oscars are coming!!!!!!
I don't know why I'm yelling ... except that some of my friends are in such a frenzy about Oscar parties, Oscar gifting suites, Oscar after parties, Oscar fashion predictions, Oscar betting ... Oscars, Oscars, Oscars ... well I don't have much of a choice. But soon I'm going to have to make some choices. Like what gifting suites will I go to, where will I watch the awards and what party am I going to attend? Not to mention ... where will I put my money? That's right: Who will I bet on. (Meryl Streep, Kate Winslet or Penelope Cruz for best actress?) Will Forest Whitaker, who is one of my all-time favorite actors, take the prize for best actor? (That would be great.) Man I don't know, it's pretty tough this year. Plus ... WHAT IN THE HELL WILL THEY BE WEARING?
If I had it my way, I would dress Penelope Cruz in something completely off trend. I think that she is such a strong actress and so incredibly beautiful that she would be able to play a little bit with her look. With the trends lately being strapless, shorter hemlines, ruching and Grecian ... I would love to see Penelope in something structured and a little serious. Balenciaga, for instance. Give her a sweetheart neckline, but do it in a heavy taffeta or deep wool. Or even Chanel. It seems predictable for Penelope to do flowy, flowery, drapey ... I say tighten it up, and pull it all together for this show.
As a contrast, I wanna see Cate Blanchett tarted up a little. But with a lot of taste. Let's put her in one of John Galliano's straight-off-the-runway origami masterpieces with some kabuki-style makeup ... have fun, have fun, have fun. Rinko Kikuchi needs to be wearing something I make (see the picture to the right). And that is that.
As for the males: trends, schmends. Leonardio DiCaprio should be dripping with jewelry and detail. I think the guys should take a page from the men's market in Japan, where the men seem to be the cultural peacocks ... spread those feathers boys!!!! Maybe Forest Whitaker would look great in a wool Cosa Nostra suit, or Alan Arkin could sport something subdued like Anne De Muelemeister with an accessorized flair.
Anyway, I'm gonna figure out where I'll be that night, and try to surround myself with some fun folks! ... and of course my son.

You're in Los Angeles, is that right? Not a lot of Oscar buzz down here in San Diego.
Is there anyone wearing Cosa Nostra to the Oscars? Let us know if some gorgeous starlet or something decides to wear your stuff so we can watch for it.

HELEN MIRREN. That's who's going to win Best Actress.
ohhh Rinko Kikuchi would look fabbb in that dress!
Maybe Leo should stick with a Tux this year, though. He has a really young look about him with his baby face. Even with facial hair, he looks boyish. I think he's trying to come across as more of a 'manly man' with a lot of the roles he's been choosing over the past couple of years. I think if he tried to "spread his feathers" it might make him look less macho and more androgynous --- which is great, but not for his personal image/appeal. I'd complain if say, Jared Leto showed up at an awards show all dolled up in a traditional tux. He's the kind of actor who definitely looks great with his "feathers spread".
An actress that I think would look AMAZING in Cosa Nostra is a British girl named Rachel Hurd-Wood. Look at these pictures of her.

To recap in limerick form-
For Cruz, this year structure's the thing.
To Arkin, decorum we'll bring.
Cate's make-up?: Kabuki.
Let Jeff dress Kikuchi,
And decorate Leo with bling!

Jeff!! I always love to hear your comments but would love more to see your fashions!! What i really want to is know who is wearing a Jeffrey Sebelia Original??? Someone on that a list has to have enough taste to wear you!! Miss you Jeff!! You need your own reality show - life as an up and coming fashion designer. What you have to go through - your thought processes coming up with your line - putting together shows in the Big Apple! Call it "A Day in the life of Fashion"!! OR Project Runway 2 - life after the show!!! Feel free to give me credit if it goes over..lol.
