Harry Potter Faces New Criticism For Smoking In Play

Actor Daniel Radcliffe is facing a firestorm of controversy for smoking on stage in his current stage production of Equus, on the grounds that his Harry Potter character is so ubiquitous that it will indirectly encourage children to smoke. Radcliffe, 17, is being targeted specifically by ASH, an anti-smoking organization. ASH spokesperson Amanda Sandford has said "It is regrettable that he is smoking, whatever the circumstances. He is a role model for young people and if he decided to take up smoking in real life that would be of great concern." Sandford also seems to be against the whole idea of smoking in plays in general, adding "Even though it is an act, nicotine is highly addictive and he could find himself hooked."
Radcliffe also recently sat down with the British Telegraph to talk about Equus and defended his right to be naked on stage if he wants, which is also apparently a problem to some people. "I didn't look at the nudity and go, oh great. But it's the same as doing a role with an accent or a particular affectation. Lots of the actors that I've admired at one stage or another have taken their kit off. It's a rite of passage. The iconic scene is the physical and emotional climax of the play. So if I do that with pants on, it would be crap."

If your kids are so messed up that they will start smoking just because the guy who plays harry potter smokes, then you need to take a better look at your parenting skills. What's really happening is that people are trying to lock Daniel into the role of harry potter. If that happens, then he'll never be able to get another acting job again. He SHOULD be disconnecting himself from the harry potter role, and if he needs to smoke to do it, then so be it.

The British public could likely give a toss about Daniel Radcliffe naked and smoking.
He is an ACTOR. Harry Potter is not a REAL PERSON. He should be allowed to play OTHER ROLES. Who the hell do these concerned parents (probably a group of 20 or so) and organizations using this play as a way to promote their own agendas think they are? Tickets sold out quickly because everyone likes a naked actor onstage. No one is forcing younger kids to see Daniel get his knob out.
Cynically, it's a great move for Radcliffe because he needed something really inspiring to break out of being known only as a child star, and the producer David Pugh must be rubbing his hands together in glee at the free publicity.

People seem to forget - Harry Potter is a character. Radcliffe is an actor. Yes he was made famous from the Potter movies, but the guy has the right to appear in other roles that don't involve a semester's stay at Hogwartz.

this is so very ignorant of everyone who says that Daniel is behaving in a manner ill-fitting of a child star; if Daniel wants to play a certain role in a play or on screen then it is his choice and we shouldn't care one way or another. Just because he plays a role that many children know, love and revere doesn't mean that he should give up what he wants to do with his life; if he enjoyed the role then we should be happy for him! It takes a lot of guts to get up on the stage in front of hundreds of pairs of eyes and let bare your body and soul to their criticism, i for one am impressed with Daniel for the amount of courage that he displayed in the past few years. He has taken a lot of undeserved criticism but i believe that he has behaved admirably for the situation that he is in. Congratulations Daniel!

I think it's BS that people are criticizing him for these things. It's not as if he's doing anything illegal here. If parents don't want their kids to see it then don't take them to the play, & put parental locks on their computers people. That's what they're there for. I like him as Harry Potter, & this play won't change the fact that he still makes a great Harry Potter & no one else will ever take his place in that role.

what kills me about this and the nudity thing is that we are talking about a British stage play that US kids will never see and if their parents are being parents and not letting them roam the Internet alone or read tabloid mags, watch the tab tv shows etc, then they will know nothing about it other than that the guy that plays Harry Potter is starring in a big play in the UK about horses.
besides which, 99% of the time when you are smoking on stage or on screen and you don't smoke in real life, they are herbal/non nicotine cigarettes if you choose. the guy from X-Files that played the Smoking Man did that stunt for years and most folks never knew. Daniel could be doing the same thing. and even if he's not. it's his body. if he wants to pollute it, or bare it and he feels that it's an important part of the role he's playing, he'll do it. he's considered an adult now after all. this is NOT like the crap with Dakota Fanning's parents letting her (at the age of 12) do a role that includes her being in a fully shown nude rape scene.

Jaye,
Actually, the rape scene with Dakota Fanning isn't "fully shown." All you see is her face - no body, no crosscutting.
I don't see why younger actors take such flak for wanting to take on mature roles. I applaud their choices to tackle challenging and intelligent material - even if it is "controversial."

On top of all this, has anyone else actually read the script of Eqqus? That there are references to smoking in the lines and stage directions. even on top of that, it's eventually the Director's decision hat happens during the play. If anybody should be held responsible, its the director not Radcliffe. But even at that, it's a play and as someone already pointed out, herbal cigarettes are used frequently in stage productions. This whole thing is stupid, and these major advocate groups need to do their research before pointing fingers.

Yes! I agree with you, jayla. Smoking is hard to quit. If he tells kids about the cons of smoking in his point of view, younger kids will listen to him anout not starting to smoke. I wish that can be true!
