Oscar Evaluation: How Was Ellen DeGeneres, On 1 to 10 Scale?
Filed under: Awards, Fandom, Oscar Watch
If you listen to ABC, Ellen DeGeneres was a fantastic host. She played by the rules, didn't go out of her way to insult anyone, delivered safe, non-controversial jokes and held her own on Hollywood's biggest stage. But did she do a good enough job to be asked back? I'm not going to rag on Ellen because I don't think she bombed, but it's easy for me to say there was definitely something missing; a spark, perhaps? She's not the type for big, musical numbers -- hence the bit with Will Ferrell, Jack Black and John C. Reilly. Now, that was funny. That was entertaining. That was what we needed more of last night.
Which leads me to my next question: Would the Oscars benefit from multiple hosts? It would certainly mix things up a bit; two people working off one another (and the audience) could open up a whole new world of content. For now, however, let's work under the assumption that the Academy will continue to choose one person each year to host the Oscars. Who should they be throwing up there, and what should that person have in their repertoire? Was it the lack of Ellen's singing and dancing that bored you? Was it the jokes? And if it was the jokes, what elements would you have added to make them funnier? If you want my opinion, next year they have to put Jerry Seinfeld up there. His short bit was one of the best of the night; he took cheap shots at the movie theaters, but they were funny, relevant and you couldn't help but laugh. He's the everyman comedian; maybe that's what the Oscars need. So how did Ellen do? Rate her from 1 to 10.

I thought Ellen was great.... not easy to get up in front of a large auditorium or your peers and entertain them for over 4 hours without offending someone. I think she was terrific. If you had had a "Chris Rock" up there offending everyone...you would have been praying for Ellen.....some people are just never satisfied.

Jerry Seinfeld? Ya' gotta be kiddin'? He was stiff, nervous, ill at ease. If that's the best you can come up with, let's have Ellen back, TM

I wholeheartedly disagree. I thought the musical number was boring and stupid. I did NOT laugh once at Jerry Seinfeld. However, Ellen made plenty of hilarious jokes in the opening monologue, and I loved her saying, "I would hate to follow that" as she introduces the person who had to follow that. I hope they bring back Ellen for many years to come. She is so much better than Billy Crystal ever was and I think she would just get better as the years go along.

On a scale of 1 to 10 how about ZERO! I can't STAND DeGeneres. Is there there a comedian around who's more pathetically unfunny than her? She doesn't tell jokes. but instead drones on...and on...and on... what about I don't know. (Well wait...as I remember she was funny only once when she made some comment about having the hots for George Clooney. You mean there still are some people out there who still don't know?) She bland, tepid and boring. She even makes Bob Newhart, the KIng of White Bread, look like Rudy Ray Moore.
It dawned on me too last night that maybe multiple guests are the way to go. They're tried it before years ago with mixed results. How about jack Black, Steve Carvell and Will farrell?
The problem the Oscar people have is that hosting the Oscars is job that no one in the business really wants. You always come off looking bad. How about just one year just getting rid of a host altogether? It'll be radical and it'll move the show along much faster

Ellen was great, and self-deprecating as always. The line about Gore, offering a script to Scorsese, getting Spielberg to take a photo of her and Eastwood, and then asking him to do it better. What's not to like? The Will Ferrell, Jack Black and John C. Reilly thing was one of the most lame bit of the show to my mind. They all looked frantic.

1. Ellen's jokes were flat, she did nothing daring and didn't take any shots at Hollywood. These people do make believe for a living - so mock them. honestly, Jon Stewart was far better - "Walk the Line or Ray with white people."

Eh... I'll give her a seven or eight. She was much, much funnier than I had anticipated, with quite a few gems. "They're naked..."
However, I'll agree that the Farrell/Black/Reilly song was the funniest part of the night.

I have never been much of a fan of Billy Crystal's antics and most of the musical performances. I think she did a good job and her jokes were smart and sharp without being demeaning (leave that to SNL & MADTV). 9 out of 10

I still think Jon Stewart was the best Oscar host in many, many years. And I think multiple hosts would just slow the proceedings down even further.

YES! YES! YES! Seinfeld had more life in his 90 seconds than Degeneres had all night. He definitly needs to be next year's host. I gave Ellen a 2, one point above Letterman's bomb.

Degeneres' opening 10 minutes(!)couldn't have been more LAME if she were trying to not wake anyone in a baby nursery.
Talk about getting off to a flying STOP...!
And there were only moments of some real humor after that...it was all pretty much the same Rambling Silliness. At times she, the audience and WE out in TV land (One billion?!) were feeling completely uncomfortable.

I think Ellen did fairly well. Aside from the fact that Ellen and Jerry are T.V. personalities and not brimming with glitz and glamour,I think it would have been more appropriate to have several hosts from the movie world. Makes sense to me! Of course...most actors can't adlib very well like the comics.

I give Ellen an 8, her skits with Speilberg and Scorcese were funny and the joke at Di Caprio, and the hoovering, and the bits about the jennifer Hudson and Al Gore....they were funny and memorable and she pulled them off well.
The whole Will Ferrell, Jack Black thing was a bit desperate and cringy, they were just trying too hard.
Multiple Hosts might be an OK idea but those scripted Oscar two handers are usually awful, and it might just make it slower....

I would give ellen an eight. She could have easily been a ten but seemed to hold back a little. I thought she did a great job. You have to have some intellect to get some of her humor.

Degeneres was awful. Easily the worst hosting job since Letterman.
