Damon, Brody and Sinise Land Trek XI Gigs?
Filed under: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Casting, RumorMonger, Fandom, Remakes and Sequels
Before I begin, I must warn you that this is only "inside scoop" and, so far, is not fact. I will say that IGN usually has some pretty good sources (although their sources, as well as Latino Review's, once backed a rumor that J.J. Abrams was not directing Trek XI ... which was later debunked by IGN and, eventually, turned out to be false). With that said, those IGN folks now claim to have the scoop on who the current frontrunners are for the roles of young Kirk, young Spock, young McCoy and young Sulu in Star Trek XI -- and, I must say, it is indeed an interesting list.
Contrary to what Matt Damon (or his people) have been saying, IGN tells us the actor is "indeed in talks with Paramount about playing the role of Jim Kirk." Not only that, but Adrien Brody (King Kong) is being looked at for the long-faced Mr. Spock, while Gary Sinise might be stepping into Dr. McCoy's shoes. Taking over for George Takei, IGN has learned that Daniel Dae Kim (Lost) is being eyed for the part. Wow ... that's a lot to take in. But, honestly, it all makes sense. I've already warmed up to the Damon idea, and think he would make for a perfect Kirk. Gary Sinise is a wonderful character actor, and could definitely play a convincing McCoy. Brody? Well ... that's a tough one; he certainly looks the part, but does he have what it takes to own it? Seeing as I am far from a master of all things Trek, I'll let you Trekkies (or Trekkers) take over here. Is this potential cast a tad too Hollywood-ized for you? Would you be happier with a lesser known group of actors? Thoughts? Concerns?

Kill me now. You have got to be kidding with this list. Hollywood actors are not going to be able to deliver a convincing movie. Oh well, I'm not the one with the deep pockets of Paramount.

How on Earth can these actors play the "young" versions of Kirk etc. when in most cases they are actually OLDER than the original actors were during the first series!?

I don't know about Brody as Spock but he's probably as good as they can get. The rest of the choices are perfect.

I think anyone who once cared for Trek (or still does) needs to stop comparing this new JJ Trek movie to what has come before. There is no way anyone can recreate the originals. They're too ingrained in our culture (whether we like the originals or not). Abrams should just reinvent Trek completely and not try to match younger actors with the originals.
That sentiment aside, as a reformed Trekkie (still like the earlier Trek, but haven't watch newer Trek in years), I have to say that Damon, Sinise and Brody are all good actors who have proven themselves in my mind. I don't know about Kim since I don't watch Lost (I'm a freak, I know). But I do think they should at least make an attempt to find a Japanese actor for the part of Sulu (who is of Japanese descent). I've nothing against Koreans, I'm just thinking since Kim already has a career in American TV, perhaps they could find a Japanese actor who doesn't--I mean, how many Japanese actors are on American TV, anyway?

Brad Dourif would make a fantastic McCoy. He plays a hard drinking, foul talking doctor on Deadwood, I'm sure he wouldn't mind the chance to play one again, except with, you know, cleaner clothes.

Erik, please correct your story. IGN did not report that Abrams was not directing -- that was Latino Review. We plugged their story and followed up with a denial from reps and publicists. Links to these stories can be found here:

Oh get over the complaining. Matt Damon is a very good actor, as a matter of fact all the choices are. They are actually better actors than the original cast which is why most of them besides Shatner and Nimoy couldn't get jobs pass Trek. Let's face it Shatner gets jobs because he is a personality not an actor. The fact remains that Trekies would be angry with whoever they get to play the roles of the original cast. To take a quote from Shatner, Get A Life. Move out of your parents basements and just enjoy the movie with whoever they choose. It's the script that counts not the actors.

Daniel Dae Kim was actually in an episode of Star Trek: Voyager, too. Just a little side note.

Let's face it! Star Trek is dead and even this new movie won't bring it back! It was fataly wounded by "Voyager" and "Nemesis" finished the job. This movie is gonna flop big time and nothing's gonna change that.

I think a reboot is in order. The Enterprise wasn't the only ship. Use Damon etc. if you want, but I agree that you can't recast the STOS main characters - they are too iconic.

I love the idea of Damon as Kirk, and Sinise may be a little too old as McCoy. I'm not sure of Adrian Brody for Spock - just doesn't seem like a good fit for me.
