The Least Anticipated Films of 2007?
Filed under: Action, Comedy, Horror, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Thrillers, Fandom, Newsstand, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels, Lists
It's fairly easy for us to scribble down a number of films coming out this year that we're looking forward to; in the next few months alone, we have a third Pirates of the Caribbean, a third Shrek, a third Spider-Man, a second Hostel and a little Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez flick called Grindhouse. And that's just the beginning. But, like with every year, there's also a number of projects that, for one reason or another, don't deserve the hype.
This week, MSNBC has put out a list of their five least anticipated films of 2007. In order (followed by my comments):
- Wild Hogs -- I saw this Monday night, and can safely say it's not worth getting your hopes up. Look for my review later this week. Agree.
- I Think I Love My Wife -- And I think Chris Rock is a horrific actor. In fact, it's hard for me to place the word 'anticipated' anywhere near his name. Agree.
- Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer -- Director Tim Story gets one more chance to save the franchise. I hated the original, but even I feel this sequel doesn't deserve a spot here. Disagree.
- Alien vs. Predator 2 -- Oh no, they're still fighting one another ... and we keep getting stuck in the middle. Isn't it about time we retire these two monsters? Agree.
- Rush Hour 3 -- Hey, if I had $30 million collecting dust, I'd pay Chris Tucker to permanently shut his mouth. Agree.
With the exception of Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, their list is pretty spot on. However, I would add Evan Almighty, Hairspray, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, Underdog and, yes, Saw IV. What about you? What are your least anticipated films of 2007?

I agree largely with the AvP2 comment, but for a different reason. The reason the first one turned out as badly as it did can best be explained with Fox giving the green light for Paul Anderson to continue working. When one goes out and hires one of the most inept hacks that has managed to crawl from Hollywood nearest sewer to handle two of Fox's better known franchises, it can safely be assumed the cinematic result will be crap.
The best analogy I've heard to describe this goes: "If you stock a restaurant with nothing but idiotic chefs, the best you can expect is nothing more than idiot soup." The man was given close to a $100 million budget to play around with and all he could come up with was something so bad (terrible inconsistencies with the other films, historical inaccuracies even an uneducated dimwit could point out, and the reuse of the same crappy props found in Alien Resurrection to name a few) that not even the world's worst video game or comic publisher could best it; Uwe Boll could've done much better, and that definitely says something. At least there's a reason to Uwe's madness (German tax loophole that, though closed, is still retroactively applied to the films he had in the pipeline).
As a result, new comers to either franchise won't want to see AvP2 because the first one was ho-hum at best, and fans of either property are reluctant to see it because of how badly Paul f*cked up the first one.

I have to disagree with Alien Vs. Predator 2. It may be a better adaptation than the crap Anderson shat out. From the stills I've seen, it looks promising and dark, plus it's going to be an R rating and when do the audiences not like seeing Alien or Predator on the big screen?
Everything else, I can agree with. I might see Wild Hogs this weekend just because there are going to be four male leads. Ego-fight?

You all gotta be makin me crack up, what could be possibly wrong with The Rush Hours?? The second one is better than the first... Yes they waited sooo long to film this third and it feels kinda wrong but, it depends if u concern more on comedy and action area as me, go on IMDB, people are totally posting on RH-3, alot of people just put it down because people go on with instant guesses or answers these days, like... Chris Tucker hadin't been in a movie since 6 years, shoot, listin to his voice peps... he has merely changed only on weight which is not an issue unless it is too much! Plus.. lol.. he got better at Micheal Jackson moves.. lol, If you actually watched the first two,(and they both have great quality, picture and sound), You would realize you would think a whole lot different, instead you all havent seen them and think it gonna suck cuz there aint been one since 6 years.. he still looks pretty young, don't make judgements on what you haven't seen.

You can't drag me to most movies let alone these duds. Hasn't anyone noticed there are no plots? Everything is predictable. Most actors can't act? No one is really funny so they use cursing, violence and sex to make it funny. I laugh out loud during romance and death scenes.
For good movies I rather wait for the video. I am NOT spending that much money if NetFlix will have it soon for a fraction of the cost.
I know people that go to the movies just to get out. Not me. I have better things to do.

Steve Carrell might be enough to make "Evan Almighty" worth renting.
And as far as "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry" is concerned, I realize that a great cast does not necessarily make for a great movie, but at least this one has (more than) a fighting chance.

I agree with the Alien vs. Predetor 2 infact Sigourney Weaver and James Cameron are currently working a film called "Avatar" in an interview she was asked about an Alien 5 which is an awsome saga and she states there will not be a Alien 5 because the AVP destroyed both monsters!

You are way offbase with your negative comments regarding "Wild Hogs". While it won't be nominated for any awards, it was very enjoyable. We went last Saturday to the Sneak Preview. The theater was SRO with a wide variety of age groups. Everyone laughed in all of the appropriate spots and applauded loudly at the end of the film. All left the auditorium with wide smiles. William H. Macy was a stand out, and I recommend "Wild Hogs" to anyone who wants to have a good time, a lot of laughs, and forget grim reality for a while.

I cannot stand critics. Movie critics, let's see you make a movie. Resturant critics, open you'r own place, art critics, paint your own picture and then see if any of you can do better.Your list of movies you cant wait to see stunk, except Pirates. I cant wait to see Wild Hogs and Rush Hour 3.So i figure if like it it is going to suck and if you dont like it i will.

Amy, were you paying any attention at all to this? It's the LEAST anticipated films of 2007, not the most.
And to Sharon Neift, not to be rude, but critics are here for a reason. They're here to tell the public their ideas about films/art/resturants/whatever so that the public has an easier time deciding if they want to waste their time or not. If you're going to be a professional film maker, you gotta make it enjoyable. If the audience doesn't like it, don't expect them to watch it. Tell me, have you ever released a CD? Doubt it. And if you have, have you also bought every single CD you've found, and praised the artist's endlessly, just because it was difficult/expensive? I highly doubt it, so much so, that if you tell me you have, I won't believe you. The honest truth is, they are working for the public, both the film makers, and critics. Don't tell off the critics because they're doing their job and actually being braver than most American's by giving their honest opinions.
And lastly, to Squeegis, most DVDS do not come out in three months. Yes, you get the occasional ones that do, but most do not. I don't know where you live, so I can't say if the theatres there are dirty, but here they're not really dirty. No more so than most places, anyways.

I can understand with most of those choices. However, I think "Rush Hour 3" deserves a chance - you have to admit that when the first two came out (or at least the first), they were pretty big (maybe not so much now I must admit - but at the TIME they were big).
ALSO, the fact that you put "Hairspray" in your Least Anticipated List is a HUGE question in my book. I'm sure you need to be into those kind of movies (which you are probably not - as you ARE in anticipation of the second Fantastic Four (for some strange reason)), but with an all-star cast of John Travolta, Christopher Walken, Queen Latifah, etc. etc. (plus some "introducings....") - I don't think it will be as bad as you expect. Especially with the current success of "Dreamgirls" - I think the movie musical may be making its comeback into the cinemas.

I can't believe they have "Wild Hogs" on there! I saw it tonight and it was GREAT! I wasn't the only one who thought so, either! The entire theater roared with laughter so often you lost count. I have never heard that much laughter at a movie. William H. Macy was so perfectly cast, as were the others, but especially him. Tim Allen did not disappoint!
The gay police officer scenes were gut-busting!
Loved it!

Andy,
AvP didn't destroy the Alien franchise nearly as much as Resurrection did, but good luck getting Weaver to own up to that crappy gem; she's a hypocrite at best. She was adamant that, after the third movie, she would not do another alien film; Ripley was effectively killed off. When Weaver's career started to bottom out (which, at this point in time, she's a has-been), she signed up to reprise her role as Ripley. The casting was a joke, the script was as bad as AvP's, and the director didn't have the faintest clue on how to shoot the movie. If she wasn't so concerned with getting a paycheck, the Alien franchise wouldn't have been made a laughing stock by that god-awful film. And, to be honest, she really needs to get the notion out of her head that she made the Alien franchise what it was; if anything, the Alien franchise made her and it can continue without her.
