Jeffrey Sebelia's Post-Oscars Red Carpet Dish
Filed under: Awards, Oscar Watch, Speak No Evil by Jeffrey Sebelia
Everyone I talk to is disappointed with the way the Oscars turned out. Everyone either complains that they were too boring or that there were too many train wrecks on the red carpet. I have one friend who was dissing what the woman who was up for most original song was wearing. A composer? You're dissing a composer? That's not fair. That person never meant to be seen by mllions of people. So I don't know if I've gone soft. or if the last few awards shows have been soooo bad that my standards have been lowered, but I actually enjoyed the Oscars.
But before I go into who I liked and why (and on the subject of what's fair) I want to talk about something I think might have a profound impact on Hollywood if it were implemented. I want to suggest that the person responsible for the outfit stand on the carpet next to the outfit ... now if the celebrities chose to go out on a limb and dress themselves then they should stand alone (like criminals choosing to represent themselves in court), but in most cases I think the stylists should stand up and take the claim or blame for what they have created. And knowing a lot of stylists personally, I can tell you that what you will find is two things: 1) hopefully being held responsible will cause that person to do their job objectively and maybe produce less train wrecks on the red carpet and 2) that most stylists don't know how to dress themselves. It would really be interesting. And then that is who we should talk to when we talk about what their celebrity is wearing. Can you imagine?
[To Jennifer Hudson's stylist] "So what did you choose to put Jennifer in tonight, one of the biggest nights of her life ... the apex of her Cinderella story ... the crowning event that should change her career path and life forever?"
[Stylist] Well I went to the floor at Macy's and picked up a turd brown dress by Oscar De La Renta with pockets in it.
[Interviewer] Why turd brown?
[Stylist] We like earth tones
[Interviewer] Why the pockets?
[Stylist] Not sure ... I thought Jennifer might need a practical place to keep her acceptance speech. Or maybe a pen to sign autographs with. Or gum, or credit cards, or something. What if her hands get cold?
[Interviewer] OK ... good looking out (wink) And what is she wearing on top? Is that a silver or gold python cropped mini jacket/shrug that doesn't seem to fit?
[Stylist] Yes, well ... we wanted Ms. Hudson to have some edge and glamour ... you know ... be current, and push the fashion envelope a little.
[Interviewer] Hmm .... it looks like something from the Jetsons cartoon
[Stylist] I see your point....well look at animation today ... the Jetsons were ahead of their time.
[Interviewer] The proportion is all wrong, the fabrication is cheap, and I think that matching it with that brown dress is a bad idea.
[Stylist] Well she can take it off when she gets inside.
And so it will go. That way someone as talented and beautiful as Jennifer Hudson can accept the highest award of her life, and look the part. And then maybe people can talk to her about how she is feeling, how great her life is, and how beautiful she looks instead of just mentioning that she seems to have lost weight. We should all have outgrown that hang-up by now and be able to focus on the abundance instead of lack in a person's life. And if she chose to dress herself, then we would all know that dressing herself is not one of her talents.
I think in this world that who ever dressed Cate Blanchett would have been one of that night's heroes ... What an amazing job. The fit, fabrication, accessorizing ... the whole thing ... right on. Armani Prive all the way.
Beyonce, however, needs a little outside help. I think her look is too focused and becoming sterile and stale. And what's funny is I have a friend who was a model in Armani's show the night before the Oscars, and what I heard is that Beyonce came to the show, previewed the collection and took her dress right from the runway. In fact it left a hole in the Armani show. Very last minute, and not so thought out ... and it showed.
Anyway ... my best dressed list looks something like this;
Cate Blanchett
Portia Di Rossi
Helen Mirren
Reese Witherspoon
The worst for the night were these
Jennifer Hudson
Kelly Preston
(and E host) Giuilana Dipandi
But then ... who really cares what I think. I tend to wear stuff that most people wouldn't be caught dead in ... ha ha ... the irony.

I like alot of stuff i see on the runways, but latley when it comes time for the red carpet there isnt one thing that stands out to say, damn that looks fu**ing awesome. What the hell is going on? Are they trying to hard or not trying at all to rock the fashions they wear. The hair styles, accesories, and shoe choices arent complimenting the designs they choose. There could be a totally cool evening gown, but then they go and scar it with poorly made hair styles....etc.Little example=Jennifer Hudsons Oscar de la renta dress was pretty nice, but torch that jacket.Well gonna run.will post again soon.
Mike= Riverside Thanks Jeffrey

It's funny...I stared at the dress Jennifer Hudson was wearing, and thought...what would Jeffrey say? I was appalled by that scary silver thingee to the point that my brain locked and I couldn't shout anything witty at my TV. So I just STARED. Beyonce's outfit bored beyond reason and sanity.
Right by you one hundred percent on this. I'm using this year's Oscars to determine what I WON'T wear to the Daytime Emmys this coming June. I'd love to wear something of yours!

I believe Andre Leon Talley, The Editor-At-Large of Vogue Magazine was Jennifer's stylist. I agree the stylist should walk the runway, too. It also bothers me the name of the choreographer isn't listed on videos.

You know, 98% of the time I agree with you. And to be honest, it would be creepy if it were 100% of the time. That is a little stalker-ish. Or swoon-ey. Whatever. In this case, while I agree with your best dressed list, I think Jenifer Hudson looked pretty damn good. Now, I am not going to say that I, a fashion forward plus sized, lover of fashion, would wear what she wore (at least not that metallic thing) but SHE looked good. She looked happy and confident and good.
And as for your look; while I wouldn't wear most of the things you do, I am also not a skinny guy with a rockin' fashion career, I do think you are pretty much ALWAYS dressed amazingly.
P.S. If you should ever decide, you know, one night after too little sleep and too many pricks of the needle from hemming, that you'd like to make a CRAZY AWESOME plus sized dress.... Pass it on!

Yo Jeff- I'd say your assessment of the red carpet is dead on. I'd only add Meryl Streep to the worst dressed list... But I very much respect your sense of style and fashion, because as a designer you are so versatile, but also because you understand that appropriateness to a given situation is also crucial in fashion - it seems too many stylists and designers forget this.
Also, be sure to let us know when the boutique opens - and I hope you have offerings for us guys as well - that "travel" design that you did for yourself on PR was awesome, and I'd buy that.

Good points Jeffrey, and I also liked the Oscars this year. It was a bit too long though, but I think that could have been remedied by cutting out some of the artsy-fartsy performances...
That being said, you couldn't be more dead-on about Cate Blanchett! She looked absolutely stunning!! So amazingly beautiful! She was by far the best looking woman at the Oscars, (and did I hear right, that she will be playing Bob Dylan in an upcoming film?) What about Kate Winslet? You didn't mention her, but I thought she also looked so very beautiful. I thought that color looked great on her, as did the dress itself. Very simple, and softly elegant. She is a natural beauty.
I also agree with your worst dressed Jennifer Hudson. Thank god at least she did take that hideous shrug off once inside. Ha Ha, "turd brown," I loved that comment! I have to comment also about the two Australian friends, Nicole Kidman and Naomi Watts...okay, first of all Naomi is very pretty, but that dress was just not right, it made her look droopy. Kidman, what was that big bow on her dress? It looked like a dead parakeet on her shoulder. She also had her lips plumped up. I hate when women get plastic surgery simply because they have a complex about aging...UGH!! She just doesn't look good anymore in my opinion.

I completely agree with what you wrote.
I actually can say I did not tune in to the Oscars BUT I DID watch the red carpet show.
Cate Blancette was by far one of the most stunning of the entire night but I also felt that Reese Witherspoon's dress was fantastic. There was something about the lower half of the dress and how her hair was poker straight that kind of contrasted but made the image MORE stunning for me. Reese, even though Cate looked better, was by far dressed better than I have ever viewed her before.
When are we going to see you strut down one of these redcarpets in your usual awesome getup Jeff?
Keep it real. You are a hero to us artists alike!

Did you see the after show? One of the hosts (dear god, I can't for the life of you remember who, it was on ABC) said that he felt Helen Mirren was the "Breast, I mean, best dressed". I thought that was the funniest Freudian slip I'd heard in a long time... plus - he was very gay.
What about the boys? Leo looked great, my pick for best dressed boy. Quincy? Spike? What was that about? :-O

You know, it never ceases to amaze me that the people whose job it is to tell other people what to look like, look wretched themselves. There are some superstar hairstylists (I won't name names) that could use a superstar hairstylist themselves. To each his own, ya know?
But I saw Jennifer Hudson's stylist on TV...He said that jacket abomination was an Oscar De La Renta. I don't think she wanted wear it. On "Today" they asked her what she would have done differently for one of the most memorable nights of her life, (I mean to go from a virtual nobody to a freakin' Oscar winner? come on now! that's..wow) and she was like, I would've worn something else *paraphrasing*.
Seriously, her stylists have been doing her wrong! And it's almost like people dont want her to look good! It's a fashion conspiracy. Look back at all her outfits from the past few award shows....Oscars-horrendous, Golden Globes-boring, Grammys-tacky prom night-mare. Poor thing. I'm a stylist and there's no freakin' way! Pockets belong on housecoats that nobody sees except you and your cat on Sunday when you're reading your paper, you know?
Poor Anne Hathaway, they ripped her dress to shreds. It wasn't matronly...it was horrible.
My favorites that immediately come to mind were:
Jennifer Lopez
Helen Mirren *a stunning example of a mature woman*
Reese Witherspoon
Portia De Rossi
And I have NO IDEA what happened to Meryl Streep that night!
It's like, she was sleep, woke up, and was like, "oh shit! I gotta go to the Oscars!", grabbed something from the floor of her closet and like 4 necklaces and said, "I'll dress on my way down in the elevator" and like somebody was like, "hey want to look in the mirror?" and she was like, "Bitch I dont have time. I'm going to the Oscars"...
either that or...there were no mirrors anywhere...or she was like, "Bitch I'm Meryl Streep, I can wear what the fuck I want to wear!"
haha
okay that's enough of me.
Later kids!
Love yas:-)

It's hard for me to agree or disagree with you, since I didn't watch the Oscars this year. I have decided never to watch them again since History of Violence and it's actors had so many nominations last year.
Most horrible movie ever made...
And this is probably the most irrelevant comment ever made.
end.

I LOVED YOU ON PROJECT RUNWAY! You were my absolute favorite. I love your fashions and have quite a few of your pieces. Anway onto the Oscars. You were absolutely right with your observations. I feel sorry for Jennifer Hudson. She is always going to regret wearing that absolutely horrid jacket with the "brown turd" dress. VOGUE needs to reconsider keeping that man on his staff for putting the absolutely beautiful Ms. Hudson in that outfit for the biggest night of her life. It was such a disappoint after all the other lovely dresses she has worn this awards season. I agreed with your picks for best and worst I would have to just add one more person to each list. For Best Dressed I would add Penelope Cruz because she pulled off that dress. It wasn't boring and she looked absolutely stunning in it. For Worst Dressed I would add Kiersten Dunst. She looked horrible! The dress didn't fit her body well. Jeffrey keep rockin your great style; it's the best!

Actually this is the first time in several years that I've watched the Oscars. Your best and worst dressed lists were dead-on. As a curvy girl, I was so disappointed in Jennifer Hudson's choice of dress (btw, I love the interview. With icky reviews like that, I don't think whoever styled JH is willing to stand up and take the blame). At any rate, she could have done so much better - i.e., Queen Latifah repped very well - slick, styled, and VERY flattering.
Correct me if I'm wrong - like I said, it's been like forever since I bothered to watch the Oscars. But the woman who won for best costume design? Oh My God! I absolutely LOVED her pants suit - it was sharp, impeccable. I liked that she chose to stand out amongst all the gowns - sure, Ellen Degeneres wore a pantsuit, but forgive me - she looked like she was out to shoot a few hoops. That works for daytime tv, but the Oscars?
For me, other bombs were Jessica Biehl and Meredith Streep (so, so disappointing).

I'm just disappointed there were so few knock-outs. I want Big Hollywood Glamour, dammit!!!

My best-dressed award goes to Sherry Lansing (the Hersholt award winner) for her stunning black and red dress. Loved it!
For worst-dressed, Nicole Kidman. What was up with that weird bow? The gofugyourself girls made a crack about it being there because she's been partially decapitated. That's the only logical reason I can think of. Yick.

Jeffrey,
I too thought Jennifer Lopez looked absolutely beautiful, but was discouraged when I heard various commentators saying that the dress of over done.
But I would add Penelope Cruz to the Best Dressed list. I thought her gown was spectacular!
Keep up the good work!

I think you are dead-on with the best dressed, except I would also add Ellen:-)
I think that Jennifer Hudson, Nicole Kidman and Naomi Watts standing together mad me kinda dizzy, it was like mustard and ketchup massacre when they were side by side.
Jennifer Hudson's stylist is insane. She threw that horrific space-invaders crop jacket on her sinply to cover her arms up, that is obvious. She could have used other options, maybe a long sleeve dress. Then brown skin with a brown dress?
She should have opted for a Carmen Marc Valvo...

Hey Jeffrey
Great blog you have done about Oscar night...hmmmmm yes I seem to be laughing pretty hard at your hypothetical interview with the stylist.
Yes I do agree that the focus on Jennifer Hudsons weight loss has been dwelled upon for too long. Maybe the stylist thought uh-oh if she gains weight right before oscar night this shrug will divert the eye away from her hips! LOL! Yeah...I know bad joke
Cate Blanchet & Reese were my faves. Portia De Rossi too. That dress looked amazing on her
Having worked for 17 years as a costumer in movies and television I will agree that some stylists get it all wrong. I also think some of them are lazy
I am not a big fan of Beyonce's style but it IS her for the time being. I was surprised at how ill fitting the Armani dress was. Did NOT hang right.
Kelly Preston was the worst for me. She looked like she stepped out of a time warp. Nothing worked there. Not even how her hubby looked.
Having said that I must defend Reese Witherspoon's hair. I LOVED it and the color of her dress was amazing. Cate Blanchet was the most interesting.
Personally...I find the train wrecks on the red carpet entertaining! Puts it all into perspective
Glad you are sharing you opinion with us...see you on myspace...Rock on....Alaria
