Tobey Maguire: It's Time For The Spiderman Team To "Break Up"

In Australia to promote the release of The Good German, Tobey Maguire has opened up about the future of the Spiderman series, and seems to be confirming the buzz that althrough Sony will clearly insist on a never-ending run for the franchise, it's not likely to be with him playing the Peter Parker character. The Sunday Mail reports that the actor feels he has 'reached the end of the road' with the character, and quotes him directly on the subject: "To me it seems like this is a natural point for the team to break up," Maguire says. "We have a lot of story conclusions that were going along for the main characters for the first two movies and we kind of tie almost everything up for the third movie." Maguire also adds the following assertion: "It feels like a trilogy to me and it feels like the end."
Maguire's feelings on the matter would seem to mirror co-star Kirsten Dunst's, who has been vocal in her less-than-enthusiastic feelings about continuing to portray the Mary Jane character. In Manhattan last fall to do promotion for Marie Antoinette, Cinematical asked Dunst if she felt like three of these films were enough for her. After a considerate pause, she responded: "If it's enough for Sam, it's enough for me. If it's not enough for Sam, then it's not enough for me, either." Sam is, of course, hard at work on getting the promotional gears churning for this third film, and will be premiering seven minutes of footage from the film to the press this afternoon. The same footage will be released to the web on Monday evening. Spider-Man 3 is currently scheduled to hit theaters on May 4.

I'm glad enough that we've gotten it this good for two Spideys, and most likely a third. So no harm no foul if Raimi & Co. do break up the band.
It's really not easy to keep all the plates spinning with as much excellence as they have -- fanboy respect, visceral movie thrills, solid storytelling.
I guess this means also we can "look forward" to Brett Ratner signing on for Spiderman 4 a nano-second after Raimi officially announces he's done with the franchise.

I am very glad toby won't be doing anymore spiderman movies. I think they should do at least on more, but instead of macguire, hire gyllenhaal. Anyone else with me, gyllenhaal instead of macguire?

I'm with you.
Honestly, Dunst was a terrible casting choice and I'd be happy to see her go. I tend to avoid most movies she's in as it is.
Maguire was perfect for the beginning, though. He was the mild-mannered, shy, awkward, innocent, naive Peter Parker lacking in confidence, and he fit it well.
Now it's time for Parker to mature. Enough has happened for him to be more street-smart, more cynical, and more confident. That's not Maguire, but that is his doppelganger Jake Ghyllenhal (sp). If they can bring him in and keep Raimi I think they could advance the character without detracting much from the film, actually enhancing it quite a bit.

I believe that spiderman 3 is the the best movie by far this spring. I also claim to attest that the movie is the best of all three. If there is another sequel. I also believe that Toby plays the part again he was excelent in all three films I could'nt see anyone else playing the part. His portrayal was of zeal. So who else can play the part No 1
