'Shooter' Producer Jumping Onto G.I. Joe Next, Hopefully With Wahlberg

Is Mark Wahlberg a real American hero? Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura apparently thinks so. IESB is reporting tonight that at the press junket for the Wahlberg vehicle Shooter, di Bonaventura said that as soon as his other project, Michael Bay's Transformers, wraps, he will "immediately" jump onto a G.I. Joe film, hopefully with Wahlberg on board as Conrad "Duke" Hauser. IESB also reports that the film will be set before the rise of COBRA, and focuses on how the future COBRA Commander started his terrorist group. COBRA villains Destro and Stormshadow will also apparently be featured in the film, while Hawk and Snake Eyes are slated to stand in for the good guys.Wahlberg recently wrapped shooting on the crime drama We Own the Night, co-starring Joaquin Phoenix and Eva Mendes. He also has his name attached to a couple of other forthcoming projects, including a sequel to The Italian Job and The Fighter, which is the biopic of boxer Irish Micky Ward that will co-star Matt Damon. There's no further indication at this time how solid plans are to fast-track the G.I. Joe film, but it doesn't seem like the kind of project that sits on the back-burner for long.

What is interesting is that if you look back at the Marvel Comics source material - and not the cartoon - then the rise of Cobra is the story of a militia movement with a charasmatic and diabolical leader (Cobra Commander) at the center that becomes an international terrorist organization. Basically, the comics foreshadowed the rise of the so-called "militia movement" that gained some traction in the early 90s but the events of Oklahoma City and later 9/11 effectively destroyed.
The character of Destro is pretty interesting if viewed as a brilliant arms manufacturer that also happens to be is a leader of an ancient pagan cult who also advocates for Scottish independence by force. So take a young Sean Connery and mix him with Palpatine - but make him nicer - and there you have Destro pretty much. :)
Duke should not be the central protagonist of the movie; Colonel/General Hawk should be. The chain of command should be realistic and a Master Sergeant (sic) like Duke should not boss around officers like what was presented in the popular cartoon. Perhaps RDM should be brough in along with Larry Hama to hammer out a great screenplay that throws original fans some bones yet brings up all the right hot-button issues with a sense of sophistication.
Of course, we all know that this will become all about Snake Eyes (and Storm Shadow) just as the X-Men movies successfully keyed in on its most popular character...that being Wolverine.
And one thing's for sure...Donnie Yen better get the nod to be Storm Shadow! Come to think of it, Dominic Purcell would make a good Zartan.

Dina Meyer for Scarlett.
Just like with my choices for Wonder Woman or Talia Al Ghul, I'd suggest a Monica Bellucci, Rachel Weiz, or Mrs. Douglas as the Baroness.
I have no clue as to who should play Cobra Commander, nor Snake Eyes. Making Major Blood a decent character would also be a challenge.
