With production set to begin real soon, Jon Favreau stopped by his Iron Man MySpace group to provide us all with an update on the pic before he's consumed by the project. Set to hit theaters on May 2, 2008, Iron Man stars an eclectic cast -- one that's raised more than a few eyebrows -- and includes Robert Downey Jr. in the title role. Alongside Downey is Gwyneth Paltrow (as Virginia 'Pepper' Pots), Terrence Howard (as Jim Rhodes) and Jeff Bridges (as a guy with a (shaved?) head). Favreau notes, "Mr. Bridges has a haircut that will no doubt be of interest to any of you fans of the books." Regarding said books, Favreau teased a future collaboration with Joe Quesada and Adi Granov, saying it's something we'll soon hear about ... but to "pester Marvel publishing" if we want to know more.
Favreau also tells us that the sets are still being built, the locations are locked, the cast is "for the most part, set" and rehearsals have officially begun. Stan Winston Studios has been working hard on the Iron Man suits; the director adds that "they have exceeded out expectations." On whether the film will be heavy on CGI, Favreau made a point to let us know he's "skeptical about the overuse of CGI" and Iron Man will be "a healthy mix of both computer generated and practical effects." And, if all goes well, look for Favreau and his team to be all over San Diego's ComicCon this summer; he's in negotiations with Paramount "as we speak."
Last but not least, Favreau ends his update by sharing a bit of his anxiety with the world --specifically, how he's never taken on such a massive project and, though he's done his homework, one never knows whether the ship will sink or sail. Personally, it just amazes me that the guy who gave us penned the awesome low-budget indie Swingers is now directing Iron Man ... with Robert Downey Jr., no less. Talk about a career change, huh?

Yeah, I think of all the movies in production right now, I want to work on Iron Man, the most. It just seems like working for Favreau would be awesome. He seems like such a cool guy with his head screwed up nice and tight. I will hope for the best for his sake almost as much as I'll do so for us Iron Man fans.

point of order, Doug Liman gave us the indie wonderkund that is "Swingers". Favreau has given us Elf, some kids movies and three pompous years of "Dinner for Five"

From the "couldn't be happening to a nicer guy" Department: I worked on Elf and Favreau was down-to-earth and great to work with. All the pictures he's directed: from "Made" to "Elf" to "Zathura" was great education, so "Iron Man" isn't that huge a leap -- those latter pics are heavy with VFX/green stuff, as well as practicals; plenty of stunts, night work, wire/spydercams, models, casts and crews of "thousands," etc. Some of the better directors seem to make movies that build on what came before; a great example is James Cameron. His entire arc of films pre-Titanic -- from Piranha 2 on down -- one by one brought to a place to pull off that penultimate flick, love it or hate it.
