There was a time when the music of Swedish pop quartet ABBA made me cringe; it just seemed so dorky. While I'll never be a true fan, I've come to acknowledge that a lot of their tunes are downright catchy, and the group had some amazing voices. ABBA's music went on to become the centerpiece of the hit Broadway Musical Mamma Mia, and Variety has just reported that Pierce Brosnan will be starring opposite Meryl Streep in the film adaptation coming from Universal. "I said yes right away because it meant working with Meryl Streep," Brosnan said. "Secondly, I saw the show with my family in London, and found it just so wonderfully happy and joyful, and so pitched in time forever in the 1970s. What a kick in the pants, to be able to go off and spend time with Meryl on some Greek island, singing ABBA songs." One of those songs will be ABBA's 1975 hit "S.O.S." which Brosnan and Streep will sing as a duet. For those who may be wondering, the actor who became the fifth big screen James Bond (sixth if you count David Niven's portrayal in the 1967 version of Casino Royale) can indeed sing, having done so professionally early in his career.
The film is being directed by Phyllida Lloyd, who also directed the London and Broadway versions of the show. Producing will be Judy Craymer, Gary Goetzman and Tom Hanks. Rita Wilson will executive produce with ABBA members and song writers Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus.
