And I couldn't be more excited. Variety tells us tonight that Maggie Gyllenhaal (who was once rumored alongside folks like Rachel McAdams and Emily Blunt) is in final talks to play Rachel Dawes in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight (which, of course, is the sequel to Batman Begins.) Gyllenhaal will replace Katie Holmes as the love interest of Christian Bale, and Batman fans around the world are cheering with glee. I swear, I can hear them -- cant you? They're cheering!
There was never a good reason given for Holmes' departure; some thought hubby Tom Cruise did not approve of the role, while others felt she was just interested in another project. Needless to say, fans of the first film never quite took to Holmes in the role of Dawes, and now that Gyllenhaal -- with her cool, smooth and sometimes edgy persona -- is in the picture, you'll be hard-pressed to find a negative reaction as The Dark Knight officially heads into production. In the pic, Batman will face off against his arch-nemesis, The Joker (Heath Ledger), while Aaron Eckhart arrives on the scene as Harvey Dent, Gotham district attorney. Dent, as we all know, will at some point make a transformation and become the villain Two Face. Big Batman news, folks! Thoughts? Concerns?

That is kinda dumb, I hate it when they replace an actor/actress in a sequel... They should just drop Rachel Dawes, and create a new character with someone else.. Don't carry over a character that was already setup...

I'm wondering how big of a role Rachel Dawes will play in Dark Knight? Wasn't there an earlier rumor that her character would have a smaller role in TDK than in BB? Does this mean the role will be beefed up because of Gyllenhall?

I don't have a problem with her replacing Katie Holmes. Gyllenhall has much more of an on-screen presence than Holmes ever could, and they look similar enough in facial features that the separation between the two won't be all that jarring.

I don't have a problem with it at all. She and Holmes look similar enough that it won't be that jarring of a change. It's obvious that Nolan feels that Rachel Dawes is an important character in Bruce's life (she is his childhood friend after all) and I think she will play a bit of a bigger role in The Dark Knight.

PLEASE TELL ME THAT RACHEL DAWES WILL BECOME HARLEY QUINN! Maggie is perfect for that role and it would be a reason for the Rachel Dawes character to be in this film.

FAN-BLOODY-TASTIC!
This is excellant news, Katie Holmes is as stiff as a cardboard cut out and shouldn't of been in 'Begins.
Maggie will do a hell of a better job.
However she shouldn't or won't become Harley Quinn, 2 different people entirely

That sucks, myself I think that should have either kept Katie Holmes as Dawes or just drop the character and bring in Vicki Vale with someone other than Gyllenhaal as the leading lady.

I have to agree with what others have said regarding dropping the character or getting Katie back. I actually liked her in Batman Begins and whoever wrote this article should have spoken for themselves. You sound really immature. I mean really did Katie holmes do something to you personally??

I don't have a problem with Katie Holmes, but she's just way out of her league acting in the same film with Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman, and Michael Caine. Maggie is a much better actress, obviously.

I still want Maggie as Lois Lane, but Batman is cooler, so I can't complain!

This is great news! Katie Holmes was terrible in Batman Begins. Every time she appeared on camera she seemed to suck the life out of the film.

Christopher Nolan has used trickery in the past to hide plot details. There's a good chance that Maggie won't be playing Rachel Dawes at all. I personally would love to see Maggie as Harley Quinn, but it would be ridiculous to turn Rachel Dawes into that character. Harley was the Joker's Psychiatrist. What would be a really interesting plot line is if she starts dating Bruce Wayne, but then turns crazy and follows the joker

I thought that Katie Holmes seem to be too girly
and not womanly mature to be the love interest.
I cannot wait to see how Maggie is to replace her.

Gyllenhaal is a good actor but love interest she is not. She doesn't have the looks or feminine charm to get with Bruce Wayne. I'm sorry but she looks like a cabbage patch kid not a leading lady. I'll bet some form of nepetism or politics got her foot in the door because that's just bad casting.

regarding drapping the Rachel character: One of the bad things (though not the worst) about the Tim Burton/Joel Schumaker films was the way the love interest was always so disposable.
This time it's Vicki Vale, this time it's Catwoman, this time it's Chase Meridian....and almost none of the actors or actresses had the opportunity to create any chemestry between the characters for ONE lousy movie.
Keeping the Rachel character, even if it requires recasting, is a good move. Giving Bruce a lasting love interest will make him less of a weird loner without compromising his dark knight quality.

I approve!
I had no complaints about Holmes and Batman Begins was a great relaunch. But Dark Knight should up the stakes with Joker and without needing to retell Batman's origin again. Gyllenhall will be a fine replacement. Nolan is at the helm again, so I think we're in for a better-than-the-first sequel.

Bringing Rachel back, even with a different actress, will make it a better movie. The Burton/Schumaker movies each had their own disposable love interests and they were lame.
