James Cromwell: The Crew of 'The Queen' Hated Princess Diana
Filed under: Drama, New Releases, RumorMonger, Celebrities and Controversy, Oscar Watch
Actor James Cromwell, who is doing press over in London for his role in Becoming Jane -- which won't open here for many more months -- has given a wide-ranging interview to the Telegraph, and had some interesting things to say. He talks candidly about his role as Prince Philip in The Queen, and about his perceptions of the film in general, and how it was received in the U.K. He also accuses screenwriter Peter Morgan of having a strong bias against Queen Elizabeth and the rest of the royal family, and claims that 'a lot ' of The Queen was ultimately cut because it was so strongly anti-royal. Cromwell also says that most of the people working on the film held, to his surprise, similar views. "I was very surprised that the overwhelming majority of the people on the set -- how can I put this -- loathed Diana," he says. "Diana to them is the worst kind of English person you could possibly be."
Cromwell also says that most of his performance as Philip in the film had to be dubbed, with re-looping on every line, because he couldn't get the accent straight. "Oh, Jesus, I worked my ass on it. My problem was that you cannot make a mistake when you are playing Philip in one sound, because if you do, the reality goes out the window." Other topics covered in the interview include Cromwell's role in Becoming Jane, the television show 24, which he says he has "real problems" with, and his political views. He claims to know that America's last two elections were rigged, and says he can't handle living here anymore.

He's a wonderfully and jollely depressing socialist, with a heart of gold-plated morter. (I'm waiting for a "that'll do Crommy"-related comment.)

Thing is, they have a point.
People seem to wrap her memory in a rose tinted haze but at the end of the day she was a media savvy slapper.
James Cromwell is pretty cool

Is the faux-royalty in the UK important enough for the average English person to care enough about to get upset at this? Really, i have no idea.

Being something of a red himself, Cromwell probably polled a very biased sample of Old Labor militants, who hate the royals on principle, and have never managed to forget that Diana was one of them.
But at least one fact is firmly on his side: it is never a good idea to place anyone so far outside the reach of criticism as Diana, in life and death, has been.
Though far from a socialist, I too have a hard time understanding why the general public reserves so much admiration for people who do good deeds with fashionable clothes, favorable press coverage, and unearned money.

James Cromwell, I have some questions for you:
1. So why is Princess Diana the worst English person one can be? Because she refused to be suckered into an unhappy relationship for the rest of her life? Because she just wanted to be happy and in love? Because she actually helps dozesn of charities around the world, especially the land-mine one?
2. Why is 24 a bad show? Because it exposes the myths that the current liberal media shoves down our throats that Muslim extremists have a worthy cause and the total annihilation of Israel is not such a bad thing after all? Because it actually ahs the courage to portray terrorists as Muslims? Have you seen the FBIs most wanted terrorist list? Have a look. They are ALL Arabs!!
3. Of course the last two elections were rigged because Bush won! What about the recent mid-term elections where the Democrats romped it in and won in a landslide? Do you think they were rigged as well?

Any one with half a brain realised what this film was about. a stab in the back at the late Diana princess of wales. the film was a load of boring old rubbish. the worst films always get the Oscars....
and in case anyone has forgotten the future king of England is the son of Diana . i wonder what peoples comments about her will be like once he is crowned. you would all do well to remember that.
king William son of Diana.
children have a special bonding with their mother and contrary to what the press would like us to believe that Bond never dies , so even though William may not show it in public i dread to think what he must be feeling inside.
my belief is when he is crowned king of England which he will make no mistake . the press will soon change their tune then...
i just cant stand hypocrites

It's sad that someone who remained an outsider much of her adult life should be so hated by both the aristos and the English working class. Sure Diana was a clotheshorse but who wouldn't be with that kind of cash and public life? She did a lot of serious good, particularly regarding ridding the world of landmines, which is more than I can say for the rest of that layabout royal family. And people in showbiz ought to know that celebritism is no fun.
While I think the rest of marty's rant is racist and unfounded, I agree with his comments about Diana. I don't have any truck for royalty or any of that other class nonsense but I do try to differentiate between archaic and phony social structures and the individuals trapped in in them. Unfortunately it seems that the British people are not getting their money's worth out of this royal family and their backstabbing entourage. Only time will tell if the next generation can rescue it from utter scorn.

Why is everyone jumping on Cromwell? He didn't say HE loathed Diana. He said he was surprised that members of the crew did.

We don't need Cromwell in the US. We have enough liberal Hollywood elitist who know nothing. They think just because they make a living pretending to be others they aren't makes them politically astute. Just a bunch of mindless blowhards!
Regarding Diana....well..... if she would have been home with her boys instead of sleeping around with someone she wasn't married to...she'd still be alive. She made a poor choice and the price was her life. It's a tragic shame.

Come on people, at least READ the things that you get all worked up about. Cromwell goes out of his way to point out that he loved Diana, and that it was the fact that his peers hated her that he found so shocking. As to Kaths comments...Wow, with that kind of an attitude you must spend a large portion of your life angry at others transgressions. You almost sound as if you blame her death on the fact that she was having sex outside of wedlock. Personally I blame the combination of alcohol, the paparazzi, and a culture that supports the paparazzi by snatching up any incriminating or embarrassing pictures they may take.
