Mad Max 4 Announced -- Mel Gibson Will Not Star!

Director George Miller has told the AAP two interesting things: Mad Max 4 is going to happen and Mel Gibson won't be the lead. Miller says frankly that Gibson is now too old and too 'focused on his own films' to reprise the role of Rockatansky, so instead he's going to try to recruit a new, young star for the lead. The AAP also notes that Miller began developing Mad Max 4 before production began on Happy Feet, and now that he's finished with that, he's turning his full attention to the project. "I have a few projects in the pipeline including an animation...but I want to do another Mad Max movie and get stuck back into that," Miller said. "It won't be Mel. He was 21 when he made the first one, now he's a lot older and his passion is for filmmaking and directing. I don't think he is into acting and I don't think he would be interested in being involved at all."
The amusing AAP story also has Miller claiming that he received good career advice from his fellow Aussies Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman -- to not get a big head after his Oscar success with Happy Feet. "I was warned not to inhale too much because you can take it a little too seriously," Miller said. "We didn't expect to win, but it was a good excuse to drink, party and to act like teenagers again." No further details were offered as to the timetables and plans for the Mad Max sequel, but my two cents is that Gibson should return if only for a small role. Is it really Mad Max without Mad Mel?

Mel should definitely return for the sequel. And they should get Shia LaBeouf to play Max's son.

From the sounds of the interview it seems as if the Miller hasn't even bothered speaking with Mel about the film.

Agreed; no Mel Gibson in MM4 is like saying there's no Harrison Ford in INDY 4.
Maybe not the star, but a cameo; I see a wise old one-eyed crippled man, who locals call "The Road Warrior". I did a story back in college called "MAD MAX: THE AMERICAS" where he was shanghai'd to America; wound up in New Mexico/Arizona but it was basically more of the same just set in the USA. (Hey, I wrote it in college for a class; not every student-written story can be "A Confederacy of Dunces".)

I always thought the trilogy tied things off rather well and don't particularly see the need for another. But if Miller takes a different tack, it may be watchable even without Mel. Enjoyable as Gibson is as an actor, his presence in these films is not so irreplaceable as Clint as the man with no name or Harrison Ford as Indy. Rather, these films were memorable for the cast of bizarre characters and situations than Max's character.

Sounds great that Geroge Miller is returning to this project, although I wonder if this will still be the "Mad Max(4):Fury Road" movie that he originally intended to do(before the war in Iraq started to happen),for Miller did once say that he was thinking of having Heath Ledger as Max,although I think that Mel Gibson should at least cameo as the older Max flashing back to one of his earlier adventures, and that either Clive Owen,Hugh Jackman,or Gerard Butler should play Max(I'd rather see Butler in this film than an "Escape From New York" remake, although Butler would be perfect as Snake Plissken),otherwise I'm glad to hear that Miller is planning another "Mad Max" film:Oh,Joy[!!!!].
