Zack Snyder Confirms: The Watchmen Will Be His Next Film

Now that his film 300 is in the record books with the third highest grossing weekend for an R-rated film in history and he's well on his way to becoming the "king of the graphic novel adaptations", what is director Zack Snyder going to do for an encore? Well, there's been some speculation he may do this project or that project and of course, there's also the much-discussed possibility he might segue into another graphic novel adaptation as his next project -- a version of Alan Moore's award-winning Watchmen. Well, according to an interview posted today at Comic Book Resources (disclaimer: I'm a staff writer at CBR), the big screen adaptation of Watchmen will be the director's next project. "'I'm doing Watchmen next for sure. That's what we're focusing all our attention on," said Snyder in the interview. In fact, even though 300 just hit theaters, the director is already started working on Watchmen and has also had others on his team get started as well -- including 300 visual effects director Grant Freckelton and comic book artist (and one of my personal favorites) John Cassaday -- who's helping update the look of the Watchmen characters and their world.
Among other things Snyder discusses in the interview include those Tom Cruise (who, surprisingly is a huge Watchmen fan) as Ozymandias rumors, how much money he thinks Watchmen should cost and what Warner Bros. thinks about it, the alleged racist undertones in 300 and why he won't ever stop directing commercials no matter how many movies he makes. But most importantly, he's just plain excited to do Watchmen. Said Snyder: "Maybe I don't know what I'm talking about, but I feel like Watchmen the coolest thing ever and I have to do it."

Is there any danger of Hollywood films being made based on human experiences by human beings and shot without any CGI rather than films based on graphic novels and comic books. 300 looks so laughable and so unrealistic, I may as well be watching Tom and Jerry.

perhaps you should take the time to see 300 before you call it "laughable." and if you are concerned about realism, then you should obviously have no interest in Watchmen, since it is, after all, a comic book as well.

Matt, the last comic book film adaptation I saw in the cinema was Batman (the first one by Tim Burton!) and that was in 1989! Battle scenes that go on forever and forever ala Lord of the Rings leaves me bored after about 90 seconds. All they od is basically regurgitate the initial 90 seconds from godawful different angles and different characters. Wow, what a great director you must be to do that! Next time the media lauds a film like this, maybe they should mention the 50 computer geeks who actually CREATED the film on their iMacs while the director was out clubbing with the actors.

I can understand having a preference of what one sees in a film, but I consider it rather unfair to dismiss CGI so quickly as a visual art form. Film is the youngest of the Arts and one most affected by changes in technology. By using different techniques to convey an idea visually, much as painters use different paints and styles, a director and his team can accomplish amazing things. Of course, no, this doesn't necessarily make for a good, compelling story, but each one has to be taken on its merits. LOTR and 300 are amazing efforts to blend new technology with visual story telling and took as much effort from the director as any "traditional" film. Some might find fault with the results as a whole, but the visual images are beyond question a delight to behold.

I wonder if marty has actually read Watchmen, or if it's a case of, "Oh, I don't understand these new-fangled comic books, make them go away!"
I would classify Watchmen, and other Alan Moore works such as From Hell, as some of the greatest works of literature in the 20th century, up there with Pynchon, Garcia Marquez, Kafka and Carter. But then, it has pictures and superheroes, so I guess you don't have to read it to know it's just commercial crap for kids...
(That said, I have my doubts as to whether a film can do it justice)

Well, it is about the dollar ultimately marty and people who pay $10 for a ticket don't necessarily want real human experience when they go to a flick. They want to be entertained. And these days, that means comic books, CGI, and lots of action. Just the way it is.
I partly agree with you. It'd be nice to see some good real stories outside of the arthouses. But that doesn't mean I can't suspend my disbelief for a couple hours and see some good old-fashioned ass-kicking. If those types of movies aren't your cup of tea, then don't see 'em. And don't berate them in a way that makes you seem like a moron, especially when you haven't seen the movies and are basing your opinion on the 45 second trailer. When did a trailer define a movie anyway?
Entertainment is a pendulum. It goes back and forth. If you want "human experiences by human beings" get off the computer and go outside... it's full of human experiences. Go volunteer at your local shelter and talk to those people. You'll get plenty, I'm sure.
