Which Superhero Should Jake Gyllenhaal Play: Captain Marvel or Spider-Man?
Filed under: Action, Casting, RumorMonger, Fandom, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels
It appears there's a bit of a tug-of-war going on right now over the hunky Jake Gyllenhaal. However, instead of two females fighting for his love, a couple of Hollywood heavyweights are fighting to attach the star to one of two high profile projects. The New York Daily News gossip columnists Rush & Molloy (not exactly reliable sources, we know) tell us New Line is preparing to offer Gyllenhaal a massive payday to take on the role of Captain Marvel in Shazam!, yet another comic book-turned-feature film project to be directed by Peter Segal and written by John August. Studio views Shazam! as having the potential to be a huge franchise -- along the lines of both Batman and Spider-Man -- but only if they can sign up the right talent.
There's one small problem though: New Line is trying to act real fast so that Sam Raimi and the folks behind the Spider-Man franchise don't convince Gyllenhaal to replace Tobey Maguire instead. With his boyish good looks and ability to pack on some muscle and the charm, Gyllenhaal would be a perfect replacement for Maguire -- one that would definitely help the series continue and, perhaps, help attract an even larger fanbase. But would he make a good Captain Marvel? In Shazam!, a teenage boy named Billy Batson finds he has the ability to transform into an adult superhero when he utters the magic word, Shazam! So, if Gyllenhaal does land the role, would he play both the teenager and the adult superhero? Will New Line update the story so that Batson is a tad older, this way an actor can play both roles (like in Batman and Spider-Man)? What do you think -- would Gyllenhaal be better as Captain Marvel or as the new Spider-Man?

Despite my love for the spidey films, I have long thought that Jake would make a good replacement for Tobey as Peter Parker/Spidey. And despite the fact that the old Big Red Cheese comics were fun, I just don't see Shazam! being a big franchise.

As a longtime Captain Marvel fan, I think Jake G. couldn't be less appropriate for the role.
Or Spidey.
Moot.
Next.

Agreed. He certainly has that awkward, boy scout appeal that he shows off in a lot of movies, except that works better with Billy Batson instead of Captain Marvel, and Billy is a little kid.
He's also too big for Spider-Man. As is Tobey Maguire. He looks nerdy, sure, but Peter Parker is supposed to be really lanky, almost a lean muscular look, and Jake is too big for that.
P.S. Does anyone think Spider-man looks kind of fat in the movies?

I think he'd be great as the next Spidey. I can't really think of anyone better. Keep in mind that Spidey in the movies is getting into his mid 20s and should be fit. He's no longer the little skinny high school kid. Gyllenhaal has the look definitely.
I think Captain Marvel is not going to translate well to screen, and I can't see him in the role. The premise is so cheesy that it sounds like a bad comedy, or a bad Shaq movie. I think it'd be a horrible career move.

Captain Marvel might be slightly better than Ghost Rider, but not by much. There is simply not enough knowledge outside of the comic fanbase that knows who he is which will hurt the franchise. And if they screw with the character it will only hurt it more.
The best move for Jake would be Spidey, which is garunteed to rake in over 70 million in the first weekend, especially if 3 does as well as I'm hoping...

Plain and simple spider-man needs a replacement because as it sits now he is whinny. Also there is a captain role out the Jake but it is not Captain Marvel. He is better suited to play Captain America and the franchise would be much stronger than this joke suggested above. He is not Nick Cage who shopped for a super hero role for years until a pile of Ghost Rider dung came along.

I always thought Tobey McGuire was a bad choice for Spidey (having been a comics fan for decades), and now that you mention it, yeah, Gyllenhaal would have made a good Spidey. But to date, I have found the Spider-Man movies really badly written, so maybe McGuire is doing the best he can with lousy material.
But Gyllenhaal would not make a good Cap. For one thing, you really would need a big guy in that suit and with what's been happening in Civil War, I'm rather touchy on that subject.

I have been a big Jake G. fan for years now and if he were to take on the role of Captain Marvel I feel that it wouldn't be a good career move at all. First of all, Cap. isn't as well renowned as Spider-Man was before it was transformed to a live-action feature film and secondly, Gyllenhaal should definitely be the next Peter Parker over being Captain Marvel because he is already a trusted actor and Spider-Man is already a big enough franchise where he will be better fitted for.

He'd suck for both roles, honestly. He might make a good Aquaman, since nobody cares about him.

If he were to take over the Spidey, Marvel or Cap America roles, then Jake better be prepared to endure what I call the "Christopher Reeve Syndrome." Wherein no matter what role he takes afterward, he will forever be associated with the super hero role, which Reeve actually found very frustrating(and I think it's the real reason Mcguire's bowing out of the Spidey franchise.)

He would definitely be better actor for Spiderman then Captain Marvel. Honestly I do not think that he fits the part for either of them.

Jake has a wonderful career of his own and I would imagine can pick and choose what he wants to do. If he wants to be Captain Marvel, he'll be great but I don't want him to do that. And I certainly don't want him taking Tobey Maguire's left-overs. There are also other more personal reasons he should avoid Spiderman. He's been interested in doing at least two super hero roles but I hope he's put that behind him by now. I'd like to see him doing a romantic comedy or almost any other kind of movie... but playing an adult!

The only two actors that could have replaced Tobie were Topher Grace and Jake G., they both have a similar look and feel to Tobie and could play Peter Parker well, Topher would have been better for both Parker and Spiderman, thats why it surprised me when they cast him as Eddie Brock, but I guess that's good news for Jake because he is certainly second best. He might pick Shazam! to avoid being compared to Tobie, but he really shouldn't. There is an 80% chance that movie will completely suck and an 80% chance that Spidy 4 will still be pretty darn good.

i think jake would be a great spiderman. as many probably know and have mentioned he does look somewhat like tobey so there wouldn't too much of the continuity issues that the batman faced w/ its many faces of bruce wayne. but i also think that jake might be able to bring more of the wisecracking lighter side of spidey that tobey sort of lacked in. this is where i agree that topher should've been cast as parker from the beginning what with his geekiness and wisecracking as seen in his previous roles, but since he's already venom and they need a new spidey, jake should be able to fit the bill. i think jake's also got more of the sharper features of peter parker from the comics (like in civil war), specifically his jawline, chin and haircut (the scene in spidey two where tobey tries to stop the train, his face looked really off for me,almost constipated and i think topher/jake would looked a lot better doing that same scene). the only reasons that i can think of that jake wouldn't want to join w/ spiderman is wanting to break away from being a tobey lookalike and maybe his past relation w/ kirsten. other than that, it would just be a really bad move on his part if he chose shazaam over spiderman, as the latter is one of the most popular comic book characters of all time, whereas shazam can be seen as a superman clone
