Indy Loves Thoses Blondes: Cate Blanchett Will Play Love Interest!
Filed under: Action, Casting, Fandom, Remakes and Sequels
Looks like Indy is staying with blondes -- the Hollywood Reporter tells us this morning that Cate Blanchett has joined the currently untitled Indiana Jones 4. Though no plot description was given, we assume she will play Harrison Ford's love interest in the film, which begins shooting this June in Los Angeles, as well as at several undisclosed locations around the globe. Paramount Pictures has already announced that they will release Indy 4 day-and-date around the world on May 22, 2008; Steven Spielberg will direct, off a script written by David Koepp.
Blanchett will officially become the fourth woman in Indy's life, following Karen Allen (the only non-blonde and my favorite so far), Kate Capshaw and Alison Doody. Recently, Variety told us Shia LaBeouf was also in final negotiations to play Indy's son, though LaBeouf later denied those rumors, saying no papers had be signed. But, if it is true, does that mean Indy now has a family? Is he married to Blanchett? Regardless, she's a perfect fit for the franchise -- even though we've never really seen her tackle action-comedy with the exception of The Life Aquatic (if you consider that film an action-comedy). The actress will first finish filming The Curious Case of Benjamin Button with Brad Pitt before heading off on what will be Indiana Jones' final adventure (we think). With a love interest cast, all we need now is a villain. Any guesses?

Given that Harrison Ford is twenty-seven years older than her, maybe Ms. Blanchett is actually playing Indy's daughter.

Mr. Davis, if this is "shocking details", then perhaps you should have starred as the Queen instead of Helen Mirram.

This is stupid, pointless speculation. Remember when news was actually news? Why not speculate who the love interest will be, now that Blanchett has been cast as the villain? Maybe she's both (like in the Last Crusade). Maybe she's his mother in a flashback. Maybe his daughter or cousin. Maybe she's the artifact in this one, or the knight guarding the artifact. Maybe...

I'm just happy to see that another "Indiana Jones" movie is being made. Wish the release date were sooner than next year, but I think they picked a good time of year for it. Sure, Cate Blanchett seems okay for the movie; she will undoubtedly do a good job. I'm not exactly her fan, but I don't dislike her, either. I can think of a whole pile of stars whom I would not like nearly as much in the role. I am a Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford fan, so it's good news to hear that filming will begin soon.

I really love the Indiana JOnes movies and am looking forward to this one. But I sure hope they keep the character age-appropriate. We all are a lot older and so is Harrison so they should not insult our intelligence by making him too young in the film. I would love to see them give him the limitations that come with age.

Ken, they referred to Karen Allen as the only non-blonde.

They should have brought Karen back. Without her I won't even bother to see it in the Theatre, I'll just wait for the DVD. Our library has them to check out free.

I am glad that Indy 4 finally show therefore is it last movie? It may be since Harrison is 64 yrs old to be older and might be retired and marry a woman and get family done and settle down no more adventure. Somehow his son or daugther would follow his footsteps to be as him..

How about Alan Rickman for the villain. He was a great one in Die Hard and Quigley Down Under, and his Severus Snape in the Harry Potter movies works. The guy obviously has range as a villain and a great spooky evil voice.

I'm with all the guys concerned about age. I mean, for cryin' out loud--Ford will be 65 this July and Blanchett is 38 this May. If she plays a love interest, they should be ashamed (almost as much as if they cast that LeBouf kid as his son).
I'd LOVE to see Blanchett as Indy's daughter and heir apparent. How *awesome* would that be? It's 1962 and Blanchett's character could be an archeologist cum adventurer who gets mixed up in the cold war as the Soviets go after something... uh, sacredish in Korea (maybe?)--I don't know, but if having her be his daughter and adventuring heir, I think it's a GREAT idea.
In fact, I was pretty unimpressed with the idea of a 4th Indy movie. I mean, doesn't Hollywood usually do a crap job when they remake/sequelize our favorite films from years long past? Especially after all these years--I think the entire idea reaks of the Prequel Trilogy.
...and I don't think any of us want another one of those.
