Is Frank Miller Planning a Sequel to 300?
Filed under: Action, Warner Brothers, RumorMonger, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels
Now that 300 Spartans have officially conquered the box office, is it possible to somehow turn this puppy into a franchise? Due to obvious spoiler-ish reasons, there's no way one could throw together a sequel without doing some major back-from-the-dead work beforehand. But, these days, there's no way a studio can wipe their hands clean and walk away from a monster like 300 without first considering all the possibilities. Case in point: In a recent Variety story, Anne Thompson cleverly slides in this little tidbit: "[Frank] Miller is also prepping a follow-up to 300 based on another mythic tale from Greek history, but he won't divulge details."
Oh, is that right? Could it be that, instead of doing a straight sequel, Warner Bros. might be looking at a potential Greek-themed trilogy? And since Miller is on this whole directing kick lately, would he helm? CHUD tells us that 300 producer Gianni Nunnari recently told reporters (while out promoting the film) that there was a way to do a sequel, but didn't go into any further details. Regardless, there's no doubt we'll be seeing more films like 300 crop up in the next couple years -- it's the kind of visual crack that begs to be shown over and over again, utilizing several different formats. It's addictive, it makes a whole lot of money and, most importantly, it's fun to watch on a big screen. Any guesses to what this other "mythic tale from Greek history" might be? And will Zack Snyder be involved? As always, as soon as Cinematical hears more -- good or bad -- we'll serve you the news on an oiled-up half-naked platter. Because, apparently, that's how you like it ...

Dumb. I hope not. If they do it will be a straight to DVD matter. Or it should be. The freshness of the film (in scope and visual style) would definately die the second time out.

I'll bet you that they're looking at the Anabasis - after all, it's been proved to work as a movie before...

Depends on how it's done. A straight sequel could be great, if they stick to history and show the war that happens after the events of "300". Take it straight from the speech the guy gives after the battle of Thermopylae. If the try bringing Leonidas back from the dead, well then a crapfest it will be.

There's the Athenian sea Battle of Artemisium which happened at the same time as the land Battle of Thermopylae and where the Athenians were greatly outnumbered as well. Then there is the final Battle of Plataea where the Persians were defeated by the combined army of the Greeks to include Spartans and Athenians. Like the end of the 300 said - they were only outnumbered 3 or 4 to one for that battle. That's three big muscled fueled movies right there. And you could even bring Gerald Butler back in flashbacks. It could be done, it could be done well. And I know I'd be in line to see it based on how much I liked the 300. But then the second Matrix movie could have been, should have been - great. So much to worry about. :-)

Hmmm someone is bitter. I get sarcasm but in every joke there is a bit of truth and the undertone of this post is that the public is stupid. There comes a point where you just start to offend your readers.

I hope these guys don't mess up a good thing for an extra porche or extra wide screen TV in their bedroom. I mean c'mon it was a good movie, let it be free from the disease of sequels. Let the art prevail over attempts to make money. Remember the Matrix movies. The first film was great but the sequels took away from its greatness and we are left with a longer story with more movie but less substance. Let our imagination be the sequels.
