Cinematical Presents: Bondcast -- Episode Two
Filed under: Action, James Bond, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels, Bondcast, Daniel Craig

[Update! We had some problems with our RSS feed and iTunes subscription links below. All has been fixed. Happy listening!]
Bondcast is back! This episode Athena Stamos of CommanderBond.net and I talk about the aftermath of the Casino Royale DVD release and head to a screening party. We also cover our favorite Bond girls, although we both learned that it is very hard to choose just one. Athena takes us through the list of actors that were considered for the role before the mantle went to Daniel Craig.
Since they didn't include one with the recent release, we'll soon be bringing you our own feature-length Casino Royale commentary that you can play along at home with your copy of the film (or without it, if you have an extremely active imagination.) Upcoming interviews on the show include actress Lana Wood who played Plenty O'Toole in Diamonds Are Forever, and John Cox, who runs YoungBondDossier.com, a great source for James Bond news and information in the literary world.
Here are a few tidbits that, even with our vast Bond knowledge, we didn't have at our fingertips during the podcast. When we refer to the post, you can glance here for the points we're talking about.
- England got the Region 2 DVD release of Casino Royale earlier this week (3/19), while the States got the Region 1 discs last week (3/13). Sort of ironic that we get Britain's superspy in our homes before they do.
- CommanderBond reports that after battling with The Secret, Casino Royale has indeed ended up as #1 on the DVD sales charts.
- Pussy Galore's bevy of flying beauties is the eponymous 'Pussy Galore's Flying Circus.' An interesting fact is that while the group is comprised solely of women, it was actually men wearing blonde wigs. Yow.
- Robbie Coltrane portrayed Valentin Zukovsky in both GoldenEye and The World Is Not Enough. Plus, he also plays Hagrid in the Harry Potter films. The guy is versatile.
- The Tudors actually premieres on Showtime on April 1st.

I don't get why you guys can't accept Judi Dench as M. WHO THE HELL CARES THAT SHE PLAYED THE ROLE BEFORE. It is simple. She is awesome as M. No need to recast that role since it is played totally differently in the new film.

If you guys do a bondcast commentary for Casino Royale, please make sure you do some research. The facts you missed (and had to correct here) strikes me as odd for such Bond fans.

Akbar - it can be difficult recording something live to have everything at your fingertips. Keep listening though, we'll be bringing a lot of fun stuff!

Hey Akbar... I never said I can't accept Judy Dench as M. I think she did a great job in Casino Royale. It's just a little odd if we look at continuity having the M of the the Brosnan era transfer over to the Craig era when Craig is supposed to be portraying James Bond when he first because a 00 agent. Unless... James Bond is just a code name and James Bond is really a number of didn't people... dun dun dun... but that's a whole other discussion. ;)
I don't think we really corrected much. Just the fact that the UK dvd was released after the US dvd and the addition of the name: Pussy Galore's Flying Circus. Casino Royale shooting up to #1 above The Secret happened after we recorded the podcast so that was more of an update. As well as the comments written about Robbie Coltrane were just added as an oh btw, if you didn't know... this is who Valentin Zukovsky is. Bond fans aren't know it alls. ;)

I just don't see why you have such a problem with Dench being brought over. She is not the exact same M as before. Casino Royale=Franchise Rebooted. It is as simple as that. There is no continuity between Casino Royale and all previous films (let alone the loose continuity of all previous Bond fims)
As for the missing facts, for someone representing commanderbond.net, I would expect a little more full knowledge. So if you guys don't have these at least outlined, you are just making it up as you go along? If that is the case, count me out as a listener.
And the silly "james bond is a code name" thing? puhleeze. Little hard when we had Lazenby refer back to Connery's missions, Connery again avenging his wife's death, Moore at his wife's grave and Dalton mentioning being married.

The line in Goldfinger that hints towards Pussy Galore's lesbianism is, "You can turn off the charm. I'm immune." And then Bond has the line at the end, "I must have appealed to her maternal instincts" which also hints that way. In the book, her sexual preference was much more overt.

Keith/Akbar... like I already said I didn't say I have a problem with Dench being brought over as M from Brosnan to Craig. I have opinions about it but that doesn't mean I have a problem with it. And we all have different opinions and views and random ideas about the Bond universe anyways... but that's what makes life interesting!
Our podcast isn't here to be so damn serious. Think of us more like a morning radio show. We're having fun and hopefully people enjoy it. Not everyone will of course, like yourself. but we've gotten really good e-mail feedback so I'm not too worried. If you want something a little more fact filled there is the podcast over on CommanderBond.net which may be more of your cup of tea (Paul can be silly at times though too). And if that doesn't work for you I'm sure there are other podcast you can check out... I think there's one called "Being Bond". Anywho, great if you choose to keep listening, but if not best of luck searching. :)

I thought you made a sound argument in favor of Tiffany Case/Jill St. John as the best Bond Girl. I hadn't really considered her to be in the running before (I think this bias had something to do with some truly disturbing images that came to mind when I heard that Ms. St. John had been engaged in an intimate relationship with Henry Kissinger many years ago). In Fleming's novel, Tiffany is a truly "hard case" when it comes to men (with good reason), and is no pushover as she rescues Bond from certain death. So she's a good choice. I seem to have an odd taste for obscure, peripheral Bond woman myself, such as Olympe in OHMSS (played by Virginia North, an unsung talent who graced a few memorable '60s movies like The Abominable Dr. Phibes and who stole the show in a 1966 James Bond wannabe movie Deadlier Than The Male). I look forward to your CR commentary -- the chemistry is good, and entertaining, between you.

Another great podcast!
However, I'm having trouble subscribing to this via iTunes. It tells me it's not available to the U.S. store?
Looking forward to the next.

I've found both of your podcasts very entertaining. Indeed my only quibble is over difficulty I've had setting up a subscription. As I am not certain that this isn't a problem on my end, i shan't trouble you with it.
That being said, I have found your two shows marvellously entertaining and look forward to future podcasts!!!
Cheers,
Darkpath

I'm pumped that The Tudors is being picked up for the second season. As a huge JRM fan, I love him as King Henry VIII. He's all over the place right now, I recently saw him in the new hugo ad, www.hugofragrances.com/us. I'm anxious to see if showtime can keep the intrigue in season 2!
