Duchovny Says 'X-Files 2' Negotiations Almost Complete

Hey, remember back in the day when there was this TV show called The X-Files? And, based on the success of the show, they made a movie? It's okay if you don't remember, the film came out -- I dunno -- nine freaking years ago! Since then there's been talk of a sequel ... and more talk of a sequel ... and even more talk of a sequel. Heck, two years ago David Duchovny actually said that an X-Files 2 was taking shape and would go into production sometime in 2006. Yeah, that never happened. However, while out promoting his latest film, The TV Set, Duchovny noted that negotiations were just about wrapped up, and he feels production will now start sometime in 2008, or sooner. Then again, he's said this before ... so, X-Files fans, don't go holding your breath.
One thing Duchovny did note back in 2005 was that the sequel will not pick up where the last film left off, or involve some sort of alien conspiracy. Instead, it will be a regular old supernatural horror film. No word on what that means for Agent Mulder (will he be hunting down ghosts on MySpace alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar), but ditching the whole "alien aspect" might not sit well with those die hard fans. If it is true that negotiations are wrapping up this week, there's a good chance the trades will pick it up within the next few days. If so, hopefully they will shed a bit more light on the project. What do you think? Is it too late for an X-Files sequel, or are you still down for one more round with Mulder ... regardless of whether he's chasing aliens or chasing tail?

I think a sequel would be a good sendoff for the series. It seemed to fizzle out by the time the series ended. Having one last case to solve with good writing and a satisfying ending would be a good step in the right direction to wrap things up.

Keep in mind these are "negotiations" between Duchovny and the rear-view mirror while waiting to pick the kids up from school.

I canNOT believe they are even considering making this. It will B O M B bigtime.
Chris Carter burned that bridge a long time ago by yanking the fans' chains WAY too many times.

I cry foul. I MIGHT be up for one last movie, if it were a final wrap up to give closure. If not, then they have jacked us around too much already. I Hate that stupid show now, because it went on way too long, and did not pay off in the end! I WILL NOT SEE THE MOVIE if they come out with a freak of the week version.

I love the X-Files, still watch it in repeats all the time too. But, if they're not going to finish the story that the show and last movie started, then I don't even care.
The last movie left us with knowing that an alien invasion was coming to conquer all humans, that the government was helping em do it, and then the TV show ended with telling us exactly when its going to happen.
And thats it, no conclusion. So uh, yea, what happened with that whole aliens gonna enslave all humans thing. I can't see any other possible story being anywhere near as interesting to real fans. And real fans are the ones they should be thinking about when making another one. Cause if its not for the people that actually liked the X-Files, then its just another weird crappy horror film. And we get like a dozen of those a year now.

I'm thrilled. I'd accept anything to get a little more Scully and Mulder. Honestly, sometimes the monster of the week episodes were even better than the conspiracy ones, and it's been a long time since we were all invested in the conspiracy...I think this might be just the right way to go.
Yay!

Also, after nine freaking seasons of waiting, there's no admission price I wouldn't pay for one good sex scene.

I think a standalone story is the only way to go...part of why the first movie didn't really click for me (even though I'm a huge X-Files fan) was the whole mythology-unknown-to-the-uninitiated thing. I would love to see a great character brought back for a feature. What about Tooms or The Pusher? Remember the best Trek feature was the return of Khan. Also, they should set it in the past (season 5 or 6)...anything with Mulder and Scully during the haydays of thier investigations would be better than trying to tie up the bizarre final seasons with Patrick. Just some rambling thoughts...

I'm all jazzed for another X-Files movie. I wish it were focused on the alien invasion and all, but a supernatural story isn't so bad, either. As long as I get to spend some quality time in Muldertown and Scullyville, it's all good.
Note: The conspiracy episodes DO make more sense when you watch them in quick succession on DVD.

Everyone who was a big fan of the show before season 8 and 9 should be freaking stoked that they are making a movie that will echo the episodes that made the show great. Sure the alein conspiracy thing was cool, but they went way too far with it. What made the show awesome was the episodes that had nothing to do with the alein conspiracy. These episodes were great. The show had a huge cult following in the years leading up to the last 2 seasons. THere is no way the movie will bomb, especially if old fans like me show there support. I myself am super stoked. I even have an x-file tattoo. So put that in your pipe and smoke it!

Pretty much kimpunkrock said, I loved the show, was a huge fan, but have almost no interest whatsoever in a movie that even mentions the conspiracy plot. In the first few seasons (and the shows brief return to form in season 6) there were many great episodes that were complete stand alone monster of the weeks, these episodes are what made the show work. I never enjoyed the conspiracy plot and as it started to take over I had less an less and less interest in the show. The final season of this show was just plain shoddy t.v.
I would absolutely love to see a movie just about Mulder and Scully involved in some kind of self contained stand alone horror plot, as long as they kept the great sense of humor they became a vital part of the show

I am really excited at he prospect of a new X-Files movie I own all the seasons on DVD and love them. It is my favourite show of all time and I hope I don't have to wait too much longer. I don't care if it is a stand alone movie or continues on from the last one. I just want one last movie.

Any one who think The X-Files died, need to rethink that largly. If you get onto IMDb.com for instance, there are MILLIONS of fans still alive and well! There are also new fans being made everyday, so the movie, by far, would have no problem opening at the box office...it would definatly make its money back!

I got into the Xfiles March of last year during the reruns on TNT. This means someone who hasn't followed TXF when it was big is interested in it's potential 2nd movie release. There are more people like me. I'm hooked to this show, and it have been over for 5 years now.
Why can't FOX pull their heads out of their collective ***es and notice the abundance fans who are STILL willing to see another movie?
This all being said, after viewing the follow-up comments made by "david duchovny", it seems like an extrapolated rumor... perhaps an April Fools.
I hope I'm wrong

Combining The X Files with Buffy/Angel wouldn't be such a bad idea....
FOX owns all three of the series.

I like the idea of the sequel film - standalone story. If it's really going to happen, I wonder how they gonna connect the film to the past series, or they just don't make it relate to the last two seasons. I'm looking forward to seeing a great sci-fi thriller.

With the way the series ended, I am thrilled to think that Mulder and Scully could again be hot on the trail of some otherworldly menace, rather than the excitement and suspense of all the main characters sitting in a kangaroo courtroom dully emparting bits of the show we all loved. bottom line, the last season sucked and it would be nice to see some good old M&S on the silver screen, with a brand new monster of the week feel!!!!!!!

David Duchovny is likely the one holding up the goddamn negotiations (remember what happened with Season 8!). So hopefully he'll get his act together and use this movie to go out with a bang. I agree that often the monster of the week episodes were more immersive - and you often learnt more about the individual characters in those episodes than the conspiracy orientated ones (save for the whole Scully-Cancer-Baby weird triangle!)
