Eli Roth Says Horror Movie Violence Should Have No Limits
Filed under: Horror, Fandom, Newsstand
Gratuitous sex, unfathomable torture scenes and copious amounts of nudity are a recipe for an NC-17 rating and a nightmare for any horror film creator. Perhaps this is why Eli Roth -- the mind responsible for the very bloody and very violent Hostel films -- believes that there should be no rating system with the horror genre. In an interview with MTV, Roth said, "I'd love to see us get to a point where you can go to theaters and see movies unrated and that people know its not real violence. It's all pretend. It's all fake."I have to agree. I personally don't believe in a rating system for film and television, although I wouldn't be the first person to want to see an eyeball being torn out of someones face during a gory flick. Roth longs for the day when "people realize movies don't cause violence." Obviously, there's a lot more than dismembered body parts behind the filmmaking of Eli Roth -- he has strong opinions (he believes all moviegoers should get their money back from Oceans Twelve) and currently only wishes to create films off his own stories rather than opting to take on $100 million budget films. Except, um, when it comes to Cell ... which isn't his story.
Luckily, he is part of a group dubbed the Splat Pack; folks like Quentin Tarantino, Rob Zombie and James Wan (Saw) are all there to support the horror film cause. The group's mission is to bring the bloodiest films back to the big screen and to support each other as they fight against the MPAA for a non NC-17 rating. (Monthly bake sales, optional.) So far so good; Hostel received an R rating, but the verdict is still out on Hostel Part II. We'll find out soon enough -- the film opens this summer on June 8. Roth makes one more good point: that maybe if we got used to seeing the "pretend" violence that eventually it wouldn't matter anymore. "I'd love to see us get to a point where you can make a movie and not worry about the limits of the violence. Then I think they'd get so violent that people would get bored of it."

It's not going to stop irresponsible parents, siblings, or whatever from bringing kids into these violent movies. It annoys every time I go to the theatre and sit down to some violent movie, and seeing a 5-year-old kid in a seat.

This man is the stupidest and most hateful filmmaker alive.
Yeah let's watch so much violence that we become desentized so that we then are able to do the real thing and not feel any qualms about it. No rating also so that any impresionable 13 year old can just walk in.
They don't call this trash "torture porn" for nothing. You know, like those study of guys who watch so much porn that then they can no longer perform during regular sex unless they fantasize of extreme sex acts with submissive slaves willing to be penetrated in every orifice.
Thanks but no thanks.

There are real monsters in the world. And some of them produce movies.
It is not a matter of "desensitization". It is a matter of propagation. We show people images that even the theater of war can seldom match for horror. And we tell them, "it's okay; it's not real".
Reality is a construction of human experience. The horrors we place in peoples' mind affect their behaviour. Only a very few will express these horrors by emulating them. Many more express them by paranoia - keeping guns, gated communities, distrust of strangers, xenophobia, and a willingness to trust demagogues to "save" them from "evil doers".
Torture porn should be recognized as a form of communicable mental illness. Its purveyors cannot be stopped in any civilized society; if we censor them, then the censors will become the real monsters. And there are few libraries in the world that do not carry the classic torture porn of Petronius and De Sade. To censor such works is repugnant to civilization.
The only rational disincentive for torture porn is to revoke its copyright in order to prevent its purveyors from making money by producing it. Simply put, any film achieving an R rating should be deemed to have entered the public domain. It will remain available to those who require it for whatever reason, sick or sane. But those who profit by peforming it, promoting it, exhibiting it, and protecting its license will be commercially motivated to do something else for a living.

Is that wrong?

Yes. Because watching phony cartoon-like violence is the same as watching the real thing.
You sir, are an idiot.

What an idiot. And now he's going to take on The Bad Seed. Since the only type of violence he understands is overt, bloody, physical violence, little Rhoda Penmark will be hacking off limbs and gouging out eyes while 'N Sync* plays ironically in the background. And hey, if he thinks people should get their money back for Ocean's Twelve, where do I send my invoice for Cabin Fever?
*Roth is so out of touch that he genuinely thinks Rhoda would be listening to 'N Sync. Moron.

After reading this article (and hearing about some of the things contained in his fake Thanksgiving movie trailer for the upcoming Grindhouse, I have just decided to swear off any more Eli Roth movies. I just don't think this man has a conscience. So, thanks but no thanks.

I believe Eli Roth knows what he's doing. These films are great and people need to calm down. We are all different and our tolerence level for violence is not the same as well. For those with a higher tolerance level, more violence needs to be added for that same adrenaline rush. That's all that is. We're not going to rape and kill twenty women after the show. This isn't going to trigger a chain of horrific events.
As a female, I am offended that the majority of people automatically assume that only young males would watch these types of movies. These movies aren't created to make young males think torturing women is okay. Any sane person can identify the difference between reality and fiction. These movies are made for shock entertainment. Obviously, there is a reason why they put ratings on these movies though. They're not for everyone.
People should focus their energy on educating oblivious parents who take their young children to movies like this in theaters.

All the sound and fury! People upchucking voluminous amounts of chicken scratching over a fake movie trailer. Not a full movie, but a trailer! Well, there you have it; it's gotta be made! It will be huge! It will be great! All the naysayers can sit at home and watch Benji!

I'm an avid moviegoer, 40 something husband with two young daughters. I am certainly not against violence in film (loved Braveheart, Gladiator, even 300). This loser is an outright sexual deviant, psychological criminal and shitty filmmaker to boot who's conned his financial backers into making a buck and the paying public into experiencing it as entertainment. His torture and murder movies and trailers (Thanksgiving, the one I saw unsuspectingly) not only royally suck, but reveal the moral bankruptcy and cowardice of this guy. The guy's an empty shell of demonic filth and I am concerned with the spreading influence of his destructive disease in young men's and women's souls.
I've never seen anything in our culture like this before as this shit (pardon the profanity but there is no less offensive way to describe his work) is going mainstream. How can we suspend this idiot's artistic license? This isn't about freedom of expression anymore. It's criminal behavior tolerated as it titillates (don't ask me how) because it's a film? Why not just legalize snuff films? It's not even comforting to me knowing in time he himself will be tortured with regret if he ever attempts fatherhood or accurately perceives the wasteland of death and dehumanization he's gleefully deposited into the hearts and minds of a large portion of this generation of moviegoers. If you delight in and defend it as just make believe or as some constructive release, what does that say about you personally and your tastes? Who in their right mind gets pleasure (sexual or otherwise) or enjoyment from experiencing the sick torturing, raping, and murdering of the innocent (even it's staged)? Just know that in the end the side Eli’s on loses, regardless of how hard he laughs on his way to the bank.
