More on 'Mortal Kombat 3': Screw the Prequel, Here Comes a Reboot
Filed under: RumorMonger, Fandom, Remakes and Sequels, Games and Game Movies
Since the original Mortal Kombat was one of the first films I watched in a theater with surround sound, I hold a special place in my heart for this franchise. I was a big fan of the video games growing up, but, like everyone else, was extremely let down by the films -- most notably, the sequel: Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (or Mortal Kombat: You People Are Seriously F**king Up Some Really Cool Characters). A third Mortal Kombat flick has been hanging around development hell for awhile now, circling a group of writers (because it will take at least 50 scribes to make this one really suck), yet there's been very little movement on it.
This latest news comes straight from the film's (tentatively titled Mortal Kombat: Devastation) director, mink. Yes, that's his name -- mink. The guy has been trolling the IMDb message boards, telling fans what his plans are for the next film. Apparently, it will not be a prequel (as once discussed), but instead will go the Batman Begins route and start all over again. This news backs up info sent in to Moviehole which suggested that these delays are due to writers turning in drafts, which then go through several different avenues before winding up back in another writer's hands. Rinse, repeat ... and so on. Though no casting has officially taken place, mink confirmed that he has met with both Christopher Lambert (Lord Rayden) and Robin Shou (Liu Kang), but -- and here's my opinion -- they should just bring on a whole new cast, try and nab a few names and attack this puppy with all they've got. Then again, when the director notes they have "a staff of writers" working on it, that cannot be a good sign of things to come.

If mink's previous films are any indication, this should be a great flick....yes, that was sarcasm you heard.

Mortal Kombat just isn't a game that lends itself well to a movie. You have to add narrative that isn't in the game, and that's where bad video game movies are made.
Now if you adapt a game that tells a story, it's easier and more likely to succeed (think Resident Evil).
Personally, I'm surprised the Legend of Zelda hasn't been made yet. Just think of how great THAT movie could be. Get someone like Peter Jackson to direct, cast me as Link, and you're gold, baby.
But yeah, Mortal Kombat, and all fighting games, have never and will never make good movies.

Ive been a fan of mortal kombat since i was turning dollars into quarters and eagerly await this new adventure. However, i would hope that the movie studio would bank on the success of the video game company (midway) and use some of their highly talented cgi staff as well as the revenue from the franchise.
With the proper funds an all star cast could be assembled:
Rayden: Christopher Lambert (MK 1)
Shang Tsung: Tony Jaa (Ong Bak, The Protector)
Kano: Jason Stratham (Transporter 1 & 2, Crank)
Liu Kang: Jet Li (Fearless)
Kung Lao: Jackie Chan (Rush Hour 1 & 2)
Johnny Cage: Jean Claude Van Damn (Bloodsport, Lionheart)
Sonya Blade: Uma Thurman (Kill Bill 1 & 2)
Kitana: Mila Kunis (That 70's Show)
Sindell: Angelina Jolie (Tomb Raider, Mr & Mrs Smith)
Nightwolf: Dwayne Johnson "The Rock" (Doom, Gridiron Gang)
Baraka: Chuck Liddell (UFC Light Heavyweight Champion)
Shao Kahn: Arnold Shwarzenegger (Terminator 1 2 & 3)
Sub Zero/Scorpion/Smoke and the other masked ninjas would be an excellent oppurtunity for stuntmen, free runners, martial arts experts to showcase their talents.
There are many many characters in the MK world however i feel that these characters could be portayed very well with the proper face & body.
I imagine a graphic style similar to that of 300 with stop-motion cgi similar to that of the matrix. Choreography would be a collaboration of minds ranging from martial art masters jet li, jackie chan and professional wrestling legend The Rock as well as Ultimate Fighter Chuck Lidell!!!
The picture would be rated R and have imcredibly gorey scenes almost too violent for theatres... MK's franchise lifted off thanks to the incredible fatality finishes and should be reproduced on the big screen in jaw dropping fashion.
The plot could focus on Liu Kang & Kung lao's quest to save the realms with help from friends along the way... Betrayal, Romance, and Desire would be the key focus points in the story. A feud betwen kung lao and liu kang would define the movie in a climatic fight between and sorcereer possesed kung lao and future elder god liu kang. Jackie Chan vs Jet Li vs Tony Ja!!!!! OMG!!!!!! OMG!!!
Imagine seeing The Rock (Nightwolf) vs Chuck Liddel (Baraka)
Imagine Uma Thurman vs Angelina Jolie....
Imagine Jean Claude van damn vs jason Stratham....
Imagine Arnold in full emperor armor taking over realms...
Imagine the possibilities
