'Goonies 2'? Don't Hold Your Breath, Richard Donner Says

It's rare these days to find a classic comedy/adventure that hasn't suffered from either an attempted reboot or a bad sequel. Yes, The Goonies will forever hold a place on my ever-evolving top ten greatest films of all time list, and I'm damn proud of it. I grew up with it, watched the pic more than 100 times and, till this day, still occasionally entertain my friends with a drunken version of Chunk's "Truffle Shuffle." Is that wrong? For as far back as I can remember, talk of a sequel has always existed. Luckily, Steven Spielberg, Richard Donner, Chris Columbus and Warner Bros. never let that happen. However, we now live in a sequel-fied society and, unfortunately, anything is possible.
Case in point: Donner (who directed Goonies) recently told EW that, while a Goonies sequel is currently not in the works, they are planning a Goonies musical. As Charlie Brown would say, "Arghh!" Donner notes, "Steven [Spielberg] and I have discussed it [the musical], and it's something that I'm fairly passionate about right now." That's wonderful, but are the fans just as passionate? I can almost see it now -- halfway through the second act, Mikey breaks out in a solo rendition of "Those Are Other People's Wishes." But would a musical lead to a big-screen sequel or -- dare I say it -- a reboot? Says Donner, "We never had a script. We tried a couple of times and every time we did, we realized, 'What are we doing?'" Exactly. Keep it that way. Though if the musical finds a tremendous amount of success, it will be hard for Warners to ignore the possibilities ...

A few years ago I actually saw a musical version of The Goonies at the New York Fringe Festival. However, it was titled "Save the Goondocks: A Musical Parody" and probably has no relation to the musical in the works.

A sequel to Goonies??? Inconceivable! Goonies the Musical??? A travesty! Is there such a shortage of innovation and creativity in Hollywood that executives are really pitching such blasphemous ideas? And the notion of a Goonies “remake” is as questionable and disturbing as the ridiculous remake of the 70’s version of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. The magic and wonder of the original Willy Wonka could not be recreated, and a modern Goonies could never capture the charm and humor of the original film. If the idea for a Goonies remake or musical is merely profit-driven, why not just re-release the original Goonies (George Lucas style) and let a whole new generation of moviegoers enjoy the incredible brilliance of the film in all its original 1985 glory? Now THAT would be more amazing than the time Chunk ate his weight at Godfather’s pizza!!! -Sarah Chaudhary, Los Angeles, CA

Sequels very seldom stand up to the original, but if you loved the original then regardless of how good or bad the sequel might be, it's still fun to see those characters again. A bad sequel does not tarnish it's predecessor (Rocky, Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Men in Black and on and on). I loved Goonies, it was a part of my childhood, good script or bad script I would gladly pay the price of a movie ticket to see those Goonie adults and their Goonie children. I'm sure a broadway musical would make money, but the majority of Goonie fans wont have the opportunity see it. I'm sure aside from a few anti-sequel rabble rousers A Goonie sequel would be welcome with open arms.
