Kevin Smith's Horror Movie Has a Title -- 'Red State'
Filed under: Horror, RumorMonger, Fandom, DIY/Filmmaking, Newsstand
It's taken awhile, but Kevin Smith is finally leaving New Jersey. The state will miss him. The people will miss him. But his fans, well, I have a feeling they've been waiting for the man to do something different. For the past few months, Smith has been teasing his next flick, a "horror" film, but not saying much about it. While out in London doing his usual speaking thing, the dude finally shed a bit more light on his plans for this so-called horror pic, as well as giving it a title -- Red State. With a title like that, I immediately expect a slew of zombie Republicans to invade some small, unassuming town in middle America. However, it doesn't appear Smith will be going that route.
For Red State, Smith is drawing inspiration from those extremist Church groups; the Westboro Baptist Church (led by Fred Phelps) being the one mentioned by Smith. He says, "That dude has always fascinated me and he's really informed the horror movie that I'm working on. The movie's called 'Red State' and it's very much about that subject matter, that point of view and that position taken to the absolute extreme. It's certainly not Phelps himself but it's very much inspired by a Phelps figure." So, will this Phelps-like character throw on a mask and start wiping people out with killer bibles?
Smith was careful when it came to describing the overall tone of the film, and admits that it's hard to explain what he's going for. "It's weird because for a few months I've been saying 'horror movie' and technically it is, but it's also not a very traditional horror movie in the sense that people have been asking me, 'Is it a slasher movie? Is it like the Japanese horror flicks?' It'd be much easier to just show it to them when I'm done and be like, 'This is what I meant.' At which point I'm sure there'll be people saying, 'This ain't a horror movie!' But to me, it is." If Smith goes the Jesus Camp route with this film, then I can definitely see where he's coming from -- that flick was mega scary. But it's also not technically a horror film. So perhaps he's looking to show us how scary some people are without actually giving them knives to chop heads off? I'm intrigued; Smith will reportedly write the script over the next few months, then shoot it "somewhere in the middle of the country" later this year.

Ugh- this idea sounds about as appealing as watching red paint dry. Kevin has kinda lost it. He should go back to doing what he does best and just make Clerks 2. Oh wait, that bombed. Whatever it is, let's cast Ben Affleck- he's a big star! Oh wait.... Er um...snootch to the nootch! Or something.

Jesus Camp was only shocking to the people who haven't spent any time around born agains. While dating a born again girl I heard far more horrifying things on a daily basis. In fact, what they put into that film was rather generic and not nearly as inflammatory as the despiscable things so-called Christian of the televangelist bent would say all the time.

Yes - when a five million dollar pic makes twenty five million, that's considered a bomb.
Here are two articles in the industry bible the Hollywood Reporter that state otherwise…
http://www.viewaskew.com/kevin/reporter.jpg
http://www.viewaskew.com/kevin/reporter2.jpg
And in this Time Magazine article on the Weinsteins, the author writes "Their early slate of theatrical releases has had mixed results. Hits included sequels Clerks II and Scary Movie 4, along with the computer-animated Hoodwinked!”"

But some anonymous, "Check-Out-My-Funny-Name-On-The-Internet!-I'm-Funny-Right?-Right?!" jacktard on a Cinematical talk-back forum would know better, I guess.

Hey 'Kevin' those comments were said as a fan sad to see a once promising director on the wane. And if you are honestly thinking this horror flick sounds intriguing, maybe you need to surround yourself with more jacktards and less yessirs. The idea is to attract an audience, not chase them away. There's a downward trend here:

Jesus dude, if junk like Nacho Libre and Ice Cube movie are cleaning comedic house what the heck are your movies doing stuck in box office first gear? Throw a decent star in there, that with your writing and fanbase would take it to the next level. Or do something truly out there. You could have nailed something like Borat where only wit, outrageousness and a camera pointed in the right direction were required.
Yours Jacktardly,
Ps- your public appearances are entertaining as hell, carry that over into the cinema and you'll get your game back.

Once again, your finger's on the pulse, sir: I'm obviously a director "on the wane"...
"And if you are honestly thinking this horror flick sounds intriguing, maybe you need to surround yourself with more jacktards and less yessirs."
Yes - because reaction thus far has been overwhelmingly negative everywhere on the 'net. You're in the minority on this one, sir.
"The idea is to attract an audience, not chase them away."
The idea is to have an audience. Period. That I've got. I stopped worrying about size post-high school (both in regards to my d*ck and my waist).
See, the classy thing to do when proven incorrect, sir, is to concede to that point - not to qualify your remarks in an effort to duck your obvious inaccuracy. Wish all you want, but the statement "those comments were said as a fan sad to see a once promising director on the wane" does not equal "...Clerks 2. Oh wait, that bombed."
You wanna say less people saw "Clerks II" than saw "Dogma"? Fine - write that (however, write, also, that the former cost less and had far fewer famous faces splashed across the marketing and poster than the latter). But you wrote something else altogether, were proven wrong, and then desperately switched horses in mid-stream to save face by writing, essentially "Yeah, but what I MEANT was..."
"Jesus dude, if junk like Nacho Libre and Ice Cube movie are cleaning comedic house what the heck are your movies doing stuck in box office first gear?"
You say this as if my niche-audience, low-budgeted flicks being outgrossed by a pair of mainstream, PG-13 rated family comedies is somehow a puzzling equation.
"Throw a decent star in there, that with your writing and fanbase would take it to the next level."
I guess those who can't do, advise.
If the formula's that simple, knock yourself out, sir: go build a cinema empire yourself. Me? I'm content to conduct my affairs the way I see fit. I've been doing what I do for thirteen years now. Trust me: I'll be doing it for another thirteen, easily - even without your guidance.
"Ps- your public appearances are entertaining as hell"
Thanks.

Kevin what can I say to that. Your points are well made and my suggestions made only as someone watching from the sidelines and thinking you can be a lot more than a niche filmmaker. But it ultimately doesn't matter what I think. I do respect the hell out of you and for taking the time to respond on a holiday.

Jumping Jesus, sir! That was a total class move. You may be the first person in the history of the internet to display such civility mid-disagreement. With all sincerity, and no hint or irony whatsoever, I say this to you here and now: I am humbled by this turn of events.
An internet exchange that could've gotten heated and led to one poster likening another to Hitler ended rather gracefully. Easter truly is a time of miracles.

And the anonymity is tossed in favor of complete disclosure to boot! Christ's Resurrection almost pales in comparison!
Thank you, Stan. You've made my night.

Kevin (if you're still reading these comments),
While I look forward to any film you've done since I saw Mallrats when I was a little kid (born in '86, saw it a week or two after it hit Blockbuster shelves; I was a warped little kid), I'd have to say I felt misled by the phrase "horror movie." I too was looking forward to a certain zombie-republican-chimp from the white house running rampant and eating the flesh/brains of Quik Stop employees as they scream "I'm not even supposed to be here today"....wait that was done already, wasn't it... Anywho, I'm intrigued by the premise as the bloggers have described it and was wondering, will this be more of a "horror movie" or rather a drama/psych-thriller with horrific elements? Either way, I look forward to it and good luck with the process.
Take care and much respect,
~ The Addict
p.s. if you'd be interested in discussing certain details one-on-one-ish and not in a public forum, would I be able to message you on myspace and expect a response? That'd be really awesome.

Kevin, I have a different bone to pick with you (no, not that bone): Why go after such an easy, hackneyed, overdone, barndoor-sized target like Christian fundies? Have you seen, for example, the mind-numbing collection of Southern Christian cliches (just to take the latest puerile example) that is The Reaping? Or perhaps the anti-Catholic slanders of the Da Vinci Code are more to your taste? Sometimes it seems as if the last remaining socially acceptable prejudice is against white Southern Christians. Way to pile on, there. I'm sure all of your New Jersey and L.A. pals will dutifully titter at your hoary send-ups, and there'll be ripe tomatoes aplenty from the elitist media critics who share your biases.
If anyone in Hollywood had real balls, they'd make a film satirizing Muslim fundamentalists. It's been a year and a half since the Islamist riots over the Danish cartoons, two and a half years since filmmaker Theo Van Gogh's murder, five and half years since 9/11, and 19 years since the fatwa against Salman Rushdie -- and Hollywood still hasn't made a movie about Islamic extremism. They're too busy repeatedly poking fun at the toothless corpse of Christian censoriousness to pay any attention to the very real threats to free speech and women's rights posed by militant Islamism.
FWIW, I'm not a Christian fundamentalist myself (more like a cafeteria Catholic), nor am I from the South (though I have lived there for a few years). And I'm a fan of all your movies, including (perhaps, even, especially) Dogma. I also love South Park, including its frequently blasphemous portrayals of religious subjects. But at least they venture beyond the overworked vein of Xian fundies -- such as their witty takes on Scientology, and the black list against satirizing Islam. Of course that took imagination and guts. Far lazier (and safer) to just take yet another swipe at those gawd-dang stoopid rednecks.
