Rob Marshall Will Direct The Big Screen Version Of 'Nine'

It looks like we're getting another big-budget musical from the Weinsteins -- probably not a bad idea, since the last one they made won six Oscars. Variety recently reported that Rob Marshall has signed to direct the film version of the Tony Award winning musical Nine. The musical debuted in 1982 with Raul Julia and beat out Dreamgirls that year for Best Musical. In 2002, Antonio Banderas took on the lead and *The project is still looking for a screenwriter, and casting has yet to begin -- there is no word on whether Banderas will return. Marshall warned that "This one needs to be created specifically for the talent involved, to suit their strengths, casting will be a big issue here, and if commitments complicate things, it will be 2009." We're not quite sure what that means since any movie that he started prepping now wouldn't likely arrive in theaters until 2009 anyway, but I'm sure the Weinsteins won't mind waiting, since it seems that their reputation at the box-office could use a little help.
*Correction: Banderas was nominated but the award went to Harvey Fierstein.

Antonio Banderas did not win the Tony for Best Actor in a Musical for the revival of NINE. The award that year went to Harvey Fierstein for HAIRSPRAY.
Even if Banderas were in the film, the incomparable incompetence of Rob Marshall will ensure that the film of NINE, if it ever happens, will be a piece of garbage to compare with the atrocious abortion known as CHICAGO.

So "Nine" will be a movie musical based on a Broadway musical based on a movie about a guy who makes movies.
As opposed to "The Producers," which was a movie musical based on a Broadway musical based on a movie about a guy who makes Broadway musicals.
To make things less confusing, they should just base it on that TV show "The Nine".... I'd like to find out what really happened during that bank robbery.

Who's going to go see this?
I have a feeling that most knowledgeable film geeks because it's a bastardization of Fellini, as far as they're concerned.
And I don't see the section of the public who like musicals going to see one that was based on a film they probably never saw and have no desire to sit through. As I recall, the Broadway run that Banderas was in wasn't particularly a smash, in part based on the reviews saying that the musical itself just isn't that good.
The Weinsteins will spend a ton of money on it because Rob Marshall got them a Best Picture (undeservedly so; Chicago was a good show on Broadway but he sucked all the energy out of it) but no one will see it.

I wouldn't be surprised if there will be none of the great actresses from "Nine - The Musical" in the film version. Antonio Banderas might be the exception. They will unfortunately do a big stunt casting. Too bad, because the actresses Mary Stuart Masterson, Jane Krakowski, Chita Rivera and Laura Benanti were just amazing!!

If Chicago was "an abortion", that would make me pro-choice.
