Shirley Phelps-Roper Doesn't Give a Rat's Tutu About Kevin Smith's 'Red State'
Filed under: Horror, Celebrities and Controversy, Newsstand
Ah, the infamous Phelps family. Is there anyone out there who doesn't know who they are yet? They're that wacky family behind the Westboro Baptist Church, who make many legions of religious zealots looks downright boring. They so respectfully picket military funerals and other gatherings to spew their hate -- mainly centered on their strict anti-homosexuality platform. Heck, they're so against it that they hate all of Sweden because of it! Of course, it was only a matter of time before their insanity would spark the minds of filmmakers. Red State, the upcoming horror movie by Kevin Smith, drew inspiration from the Phelps clan, as Erik posted here. Now a staff writer from the Pitch blog from Kansas City fired off an e-mail to Shirley Phelps-Roper. The daughter of Fred; she's the one who ticked off Julie Banderas from Fox News so much that they got in a big argument. Shirley replied to the writer, and doesn't seem to know who Smith is. This is what she said about the film, in all her true, crazy glory: "If you are saying that this guy Kevin blah, blah is making a movie and is making a bad guy in the movie and then he is saying that my dad is a bad guy - I say - boring! I would think by now that you earth dwellers would understand that we don't care what kind of pressure you bring to bear upon us and how much you speak evil of us when you know by our manner of life that we are the Servants of the Living God - that none of these things move us and if we gave a rat's tutu about what you think about us, this might work - but alas, we know you have no respect for God or man and in particular for yourselves, so why in this world would we want you to speak any other way about us? If you would bother to CRACK a Bible, you would know that all your hateful words and hard speeches against us are tokens in the bank, and evidence that we have the Love of God abiding upon us!" Watch out, Kevin! God and the Phelps family are a-comin'! [via FilmIck]

Wow, her response is more terrifying than most so-called horror movies that have come out lately. Looks like "Kevin blah blah" is on to something to base his next film on this nutjob's family-I look forward to seeing what he comes up with. Also, if we are all "earth dwellers", what planet is she from?

Joe, I believe that they're from planet crazy. Whatever Kevin Smith writes, it cannot come close to encapsulating the utter insanity that is the Phelps clan.

Shirley,
I was wondering, why haven't you sued the Topeka Capitol-Journal for libel? Their expose of your father and your family, if untrue, would certainly be actionable!
In case you haven't read it, even though it's been at the C-J website for years, just Google: LOVING GOD'S HATE.
Let me give you some examples:
Item. The C-J reported that several of your estranged siblings have publicly stated your father severely abused them and other family members while living in your father's home.
Item. The C-J also reported your father was disbarred by the Kansas Supreme Court, and later was not allowed to practice in the Federal Courts as a result of unethical conduct.
Item. The C-J reported your father was successfully sued for thousands of dollars owed to vendors.
Oh, Shirley, the list goes on and on. Surely the Man of God is not guilty of such terrible things, is he? I can't understand why Rev. Phelps and his attorney-children would set by and let his good name be disgraced.
People are going to start believing these this things are true. So, Shirley, I was just wondering, Why haven't you sued?

Wow! I just listened to her a little on Mike Gallager! What a bunch of freaks her family is. I can only wonder what the hell went wrong in her childhood to make her so wacky! I don't think film makers should give her the time of day. Does anyone see a futer Jonestown? Or, those other freaks that killed themselves for the arrival of a comet??? LMAO

Kevin "blah-blah" should definitely make his movie and expose the Phelps klan for all that it is. But why call it "Red State"? I know exactly what he means, and that's so wrong - to lump decent, hard working tax paying Americans who are "Red State" inhabitants (read "conservaties" or "Republicans")in with the likes of the Phelps. Just plain wrong, and unfortunately, it dilutes his message and will turn off many people who would otherwise agree with him.
