Jennifer Lopez Movie 'El Cantante' Has New Trailer and Poster
Filed under: Drama, Music & Musicals, Trailer Trash, Images
The slide of Jennifer Lopez into complete irrelevance seems to be continuing unabated, based on the trailer for her next film, El Cantante. Even after watching it, I can barely make out any semblance of a story, except that it seems to center on Marc Anthony as a singer who is trying to conquer the Latin music scene and Lopez is his woman. According to CinemaBlend, where we first saw the poster for the film, it's a "dramatic biography of Puerto Rican salsa pioneer Hector Lavoe. The film follows Lavoe's (Anthony) passionate relationship with Puchi (Lopez) and his skyrocket to international fame. In the mix are a lot of drugs and angst."
I know Out of Sight was a long time ago, but has Hollywood so completely forgotten Lopez's good performance in that movie that they are offering her nothing but dreck like this? A quick glance at her IMDB page reveals one project on the sked for 2008 called The Governess, but she is the only name beside it so far and I've never heard of it, so it looks like the kind of project that stars say they know nothing about at press junkets. And this Marc Anthony character? I know one thing about him: he gave such a bad performance in Tony Scott's Man on Fire that it's stuck in my mind ever since. Seriously, Tony's red ballcap must have gone spinning every time this guy uttered a line. Marc Anthony, you need to stick to your day job, whatever that may be. For those who still plan to see El Cantante after seeing the trailer, it's scheduled to arrive in theaters on August 1.

Well that's funny. You're mocking Marc Anthony for playing a musician - something he is and quite good at that - while extolling his wife who tries to be everything.
I admit, Lopez was the bomb in Out of Sight. Since then her films have sucked. Musically, she's always sucked.
And don't worry about her obscurity - she's making mad money everywhere. In 2005 she made $14M alone for Monster-in-Law. That's not including her clothing, perfume, music, production income.

Hollywood isn't the one who offered her El Cantante, it is a movie she produced and the same goes for Bordertown.

Geez. So much hate in this review...But I wonder, is it hate or ignorance.
Step back and think what people elsewhere the States thought about Ray's trailer when they didn't know how he was...and the impact that movie had afterwards. I'm not saying that El Cantante is no "Ray"...but how about giving her props for producing out of her pocket, a movie on one of Salsa's biggest legends?...that's assuming that you did research on who Hector Lavoe is and his importance in Latin Music in general...and why for so many people, the people who like his music and dance to it, this movie is something important as a representation Hector's legacy all around.
Honestly...It's annoying to read reviews from people who are not cultured, or who try to act cool just because they review trailers.

Who didn't know Ray Charles? Honestly, what sort of cultural f^cktard didn't know Ray Charles? I dated a girl from Italy who was named after the damn song Georgia. His music is known throughout the west.
***".but how about giving her props for producing out of her pocket, a movie on one of Salsa's biggest legends?"***
She is using other people's money. You don't literally make a film with your own money unless you're talking about a $5 million production that has already sold foreign rights for what you're spending.
***"Honestly...It's annoying to read reviews from people who are not cultured, or who try to act cool just because they review trailers."****
And yet you wrote that people didn't know Ray Charles?! Guess Walk the Line took some people by surprise too. It was afterall "Ray with white people." - John Stewart.

I betcha 1 billion dollars, "Ryan Stewart" is a bitter middle aged white boy, who happens to like Ben Affleck, therefore taking his aggression out on Lopez and her man, by unconvincingly trivializing their entire careers. You are completely pathetic.

How is this dreck? I'm not a fan of Jennifer's or Marc's, but it looks like a lively film with good salsa music. Plus, Jennifer's Nuyorican accent is pretty spot-on. I might check this out.

**"Marc is a fine actor. I've seen all of his films. He did a great job on his role in "Man on Fire""**
Nobody did a great job in at MTV-style turd.
***" because "Man on Fire" was well received by the public and this is what truly matters, not your opinion."***
Wow, so if a film does decent box office, it's well received and that's all that matters? Out of Sight - arguably one of the better films of the last decade - did horrible business. Yet it's still a film that people cite again and again (especially for Lopez as it was her one shining acting moment). Box office and good film do not always go hand in hand. In fact, quite often box office that's great portends a bad film (look over the year's top grossers and most are horrid dreck like 300).

Good comments, you are all right! It's a combination of hate and ignorance from the writer. The attention should be on Marc since he is doing Lavoe. It looks like this guy has only seen one movie from Marc Anthony. I don't care what anybody says, Jennifer and Marc are doing their things and making bank because they are good at it.

I agree with LaVoz, good comments.
I think this movie really look great, this is one of my anticipated movies for this year. Jennifer did a great work as the actress and producing and Marc impresses with his personage Hector Lavoe.
For a indepedent movie ($14) it is amazing :) Rated: R yaaa :) can't wait to see it !
And...Ryan and the next movie project (2008) for Jennifer is'Love and Other Impossible Pursuits' of Don Roos. i think Disney get it

Like some of you have already said........."It is ignorance and hateration". J-Lo might not be the best actress out there, however she is apprently good enough to cause controversy about a movie which as yet to appear. As for Mark, he is a very talented singer and as a Puerto Rican Latina I believe he has proved that his talent is more than some haters can handle. So, to J-Lo and Mark, keep doing yo thang! It is these dumb comments and assumptions that bring you more fame.

Firstly, as a writer, you obviously are not good because you are writingg for an unknown company. Secondly, this is your opinion. Thirdly, Marc Anthony is one of those actors who are never appreciated. However, I do know Marc is a fine actor. I've seen all of his films. He did a great job on his role in "Man on Fire" because "Man on Fire" was well received by the public and this is what truly matters, not your opinion. As for Jennifer, I guess you're just jealous. She's doing fine as an actress, I don't think you even make 1M a year writing and that speaks for itself.

I have for the first time visited this site due to a search I made on Jennifer Lopez. Thats how irrelevant she is to you and the rest of the world. And the movie looks good, and when her two indie flicks are done with she's gonna return full force with her studio fare.

I guess this Ryan Stewart is ignorant beyond belief. Marc Anthony, when it is all said and done is going to be the biggest selling Salsa singer of all time. I have had the pleasure of attending 2 of his concerts, and thank you but he does his day job very well. One of the greatest singer's who ever graced the planet. By the way Ryan, I do believe you are a white middle aged man who wouldn't know good Latin music if it hit you on the head. This movie will be an international hit here in the states and Latin America, then I suppose you will eat your ignorant words, or better yet listen to one of Marc's CD's. By the way, I am a middle aged Puerto Rican who grew up also in the Bronx like J.Lo, where pretty much this music was King.
