Nicole Kidman to Show Us 'How to Marry a Millionaire'
Filed under: Comedy, Drama, Casting, Deals, 20th Century Fox, Newsstand, Remakes and Sequels
Though Nicole Kidman and Marilyn Monroe have a few things in common (they're both blonde, they're both beautiful and they both act), I've never actually thought of one while speaking about the other. However, that will most likely change as 20th Century Fox has tapped Kidman to produce and potentially star in a remake of the 1953 Monroe classic How to Marry a Millionaire. I guess you can call the original a classic, as it helped launch Monroe to movie stardom; then again, I feel Kidman is a far superior actress ... so it's not like I'm going all "How dare they touch a Marilyn Monroe film!"
In the original, three beautiful women hole up in a New York penthouse suite with one goal in mind: to find three millionaires to marry. (I almost hate to say it, but if Anna Nicole was still alive, she would've been perfect for this.) Though a couple of the girls find their knight in shining armor, problems arise when they each fall in love with a guy who isn't a millionaire. So, what do you ladies do -- choose money or love? The Hollywood Reporter tells is that, while the plot for this remake is being kept under wraps, Fox does plan to overhaul the original story. Me thinks they'll probably cut it down to one female lead instead of three and -- I dunno -- maybe she'll own a website like SugarDaddy.com. Sacha Gervasi, who penned The Terminal for Steven Spielberg, will write the screenplay. When it comes to money or love, there are a number of different avenues to explore -- what do you think they'll do with it. And, is Kidman the right actress to play a role that originated with Marilyn Monroe?

The lead role in "Millionaire" was actually not Marilyn Monroe but rather Lauren Bacall. Monroe and Betty Grable were in supporting roles. I think you could probably still have the trio of women -- or maybe cut it town to two so the main character has a roomie or confidant. I see Kidman as more Bacall-ish than Monroe-like, at least in terms of the characters in this film.
I do hope that while they're rehauling the script, they remove that dreadful line from the original film where one of the guys tells Bacall, "I know you better than you know yourself." Gag.

Well, Nicole did channel Marilyn in singing "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend" in Moulin Rouge. And Jette's right, Bacall was the lead in the original, not Monroe...I wonder if the script reworkings will attempt to combine the two characters? If Nicole takes the role a Marilyn-esque direction, I hope she doesn't play it as completely vapid dumb blonde--Marilyn's characters were only playing the part of the dumb blonde. (I'm fearing Bewitched- and Stepford Wives-level emptiness...)

Nicole Kidman sang Marilyn Monroe's 'Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend' in Moulin Rouge (2001) -- and if you listen closely, she also sings a line or two from Madonna's 'Material Girl' in there, which is kind of a cute in-joke, since Madonna's music video was patterned after the scene in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) in which Marilyn sings her song.

I have always thought that a blonde Molly Ringwald would make a better Marilyn Monroe than anyone else.

Believe it or not, Betty Grable had the most screen time! Plus she was first in screen credits with Monroe second and Bacall third. Keep all 3 gals, with a blonde Drew Barrymore as Grable, Madonna as Monroe, and Kidman as Bacall. Cheers~~

Kidman would make a far better Bacall, she lacks the warmth and vulnerability that Marilyn had. Why not Scarlett Johansenn???

I don't like to say mean things, but in comparison, Nicole Kidman has a lot more class than Anna Nicole for the part of Marilyn Monroe. I really adore Anna Nicole, but we all know that she is a bit over the top for a part like that...~Virgohippiegirl

I really love Nicole, but she'd have to eat a burger or two to get the sexy, curves of Marilyn Monroe.

I think Nicole Kidman is perfect!! If she had to, she could play anybody! She is the "Kathrine Hepburn"
of our era. Diversified, talented with a unique abilty to play the young, the old and the naughty and the nice. Who doesn't agree with that?

This is sacrilege! Despite her Oscar, Ms. Kidman is a terrible actress. Might as well stick Mira Sorvino and Halle Berry in the movie too.

I dont think Nicole Kidman physically fits the part of Monroe...way too tall and thin...doesnt come across in any way shape or form as Monroe. However, Charlese Theron would be great for Marilyn and leave Nicole for Bacall or whatever.

Nicole Kidman is one of our finest actresses of our time. I believe she is the Kathrine Hepburn of her generation. She can play the young, the old, the innocent and yes, even the wayward woman trying to manipulate her man. Marilyn Monroe wasn;t known for her great acting (no disrespect)if you know what I mean but Kidman is not only beautiful, she is talented, classy and probably very very smart.

I REFUSE TO ATTEND ANY MOVIE WITH NICOLE IN ANY PART--SHE CERTAINLY DOES NOT HAVE THE BODY-SHAPE-OR VOICE TO PLAY MARILYN--I WOULD PREFER TO SEE DUSTIN HOFFMAN (IN DRAG) THAN NICOLE! DWP
