Biggest. Opening. Day. Ever.

Despite mixed reviews, it appears Spider-Man 3 is on its way to setting an opening day record at the box office. Reports, including one from Deadline Hollywood, claim the third installment raked in a whopping $59 million on Friday; a number that was helped tremendously by a slew of midnight showings across the country. If those figures hold up, that total soars past the opening day record set last year by Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest ($55.8 million) and clearly puts the film in a position to regain the weekend record from Dead Man's Chest after that film out-grossed the original Spider-Man in 2006. What does this all mean? Nothing, really -- except I wouldn't be surprised if greedy studio execs are now brainstorming ways to get both Spidey and Captain Jack Sparrow in the same movie.
So, what type of numbers are we looking at come Monday morning? How about $140 million? Yes, folks are estimating Spider-Man 3 to gross between $138 and $145 million when it's all said and done. In three days. Not only that, but box office business is already up 60% from the same weekend last year, setting the stage for what most feel will go down as the highest grossing summer in Hollywood history; reports indicate the end result could fall somewhere in the $4.5 billion range. Ridiculous, I say. But now that puts the pressure on Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End. The fun thing is that we don't have to wait another year to see if one franchise beats the other; heck, both films are debuting only a few weeks apart. However, from a critical standpoint, the praise was a lot higher for Spider-Man 2 than it was for Dead Man's Chest. Add on to that the fact that there's been more time in between Spidey sequels, allowing fans to really build some hype. Though it's quite obvious that both franchises are critic proof, one does have to wonder whether that statistic will have an affect on Pirates 3 opening weekend. What do you think?

i have yet to see it yet, though tonight I planning on seeing it. I liked the first Spider-man, loved the 2nd and though I doubt I like this one as much as the last, I'll still probably like it. As for Pirates, loved the first, hated the 2nd, and unsure for the 3rd. Critics won't make a difference for the opening of Spidey 3 or Pirates 3. Though there hasn't been as much hype for Pirates 3 which might hurt it, I still think Pirates 3 will do better at the box office.

Pirates 3 won't top it because it isn't positioned to open on a prime weekend for biggest opening weekend. It 's opening before Memorial Day weekend. Many film-goers will wait and not see it Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and see it on Monday. It will lose viewers to that Monday and won't top Spidey

I agree with the comment above. Some scenes totally took me out of the plot which in itself was really clunky.

Okay, evidently I really was the only person who didn't know it was opening this weekend. *sheepish*

I agree with the above posts, Spidey 3 sucked more than Pirates 2 (which was more disappointing than sucking). If these estimates hold up and it does break the record for weekend I do not think that Pirates 3 will break it. The reason being that it is Memorial Day weekend and people will be like "we can wait till monday" which they couldn't with Spidey 3. On the flip side, I think Pirates will gross more in the long run. The reason for this being that Spidey 3 will be hit with Shrek the Third and then Pirates 3. Pirates 3 will open at number one, while maybe not as massive as last time and with no real competition until four weeks later with FF2, which won't have a massive opening. Shrek the Third is probably going to have the highest gross of the summer just because of its broad appeal but it may have overstayed its welcome.
However, you need to watch two movies to challenge Spidey's record (assuming it gets it). Harry Potter 5 has the best trailer for a film I have probably ever seen and with no real competition (I am thinking about Transformers btw) it should have a bigger opening than 4 and possibly retake the throne that spidey 1 took away from HP 1. As for The Simpsons Movie, come on! It's The Simpsons of course it will be huge!

I'm not surprised at all about these numbers, no matter how bad the movie could be people will still go see it just to see spidey fight venom. I went to see this movie Friday and even though I agree that there where some scenes in the movie that didn't belong, the fight at the end is in my opinion the best of all three movies and worth seeing.

I'd be surprised if Spider-Man maintains any momentum beyond this weekend. It's going to get some bad word-of-mouth.

needed more VENOM....
The story was easy to follow esp. if you have seen the first two. This one is a GREAT plug into the others. They do leave the story open with Dr.Conners having part of the costume.
I hope they havent killed VENOM off looking for a return in Spiderman 4-VS- CARNAGE....
on a side note Toby better not pull a batman...
