Bruce Willis Confirms -- 'Die Hard 4' Is PG-13, Folks
Filed under: Action, Fandom, Distribution, 20th Century Fox, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels
The last "Edited for Television" movie I watched was Die Hard 2 on CBS when I was a kid. As Bruce blew that plane to bits with his lighter, he said -- in a horribly overdubbed voice -- "Yippee ki-yay, Mr. Falcon." Never mind that no one in the film was named Mr. Falcon! That bit of mindless watering down at least made sense -- after all they're not going to drop the 'F' bomb on primetime television. This bit of mindless watering down is a lot harder to swallow: It's official. Live Free or Die Hard will be rated 'PG-13.' Bruce Willis spoke with aintitcool last week and confirmed the rating. June's Vanity Fair interview had Willis disappointed that his film was going to be cut to avoid an 'R.' He told the magazine, "I really wanted this one to live up to the promise of the first one, which I always thought was the only really good one." (Gotta disagree with him there). "That's a studio decision that is becoming more and more common, because they're trying to reach a broader audience. It seems almost a courageous move to give a picture an 'R' rating these days." It sure does. So why not be courageous?!Now the PR machine is in full swing and Bruce is saying that those comments were taken out of context at a time when he hadn't yet seen the film. Now, after what surely was a stern talking-to by the studio, Bruce has seen the movie and he thinks it's better than the original. He claims you would never be able to tell what the rating was if you didn't know it, and that watching it, he was on the edge of his seat "at least 6 times." He insists the action and intensity are still there. That may be, but the foulmouthed John McClane we know and grew up loving simply won't. I think this is a damn shame. Excuse me, a darn shame. I've got a lot of friends who say they won't go see a 'PG-13' Die Hard film. Scott made the same claim last week. I personally don't think I have the willpower to skip it, but the news fills me with a real dread. Oh well -- I'm sure the people at Fox know what they're doing. Releasing a 'PG-13' sequel to a movie that was a huge, beloved 'R' - rated smash could only bring in more money, right? Sure. Just look at Fox's Speed 2: Cruise Control.

I remember watching Die Hard 3 on TV once and the edits were freakin' hilarious. My favorite moment was when McLain is dropped in Harmlem, half naked and wearing a sandwich board that says, "I hate N*ggers"....in the edit, the sign says "I hate everybody". To make it better, the reaction from the gang of black guys to this broad statement is classic. "WTF? This guy hates everybody. Lets get him!"

Although I laughed at Beeslo's comment and would've loved to see that TV cut, a part of me died reading this article :(

Yippie ki-yay, Mr. Falcon! That's funny, but I have to admit it was funnier when I read it on iwatchstuff.com THREE DAYS AGO. Jackass.

Teddy,
Wouldn't have felt the need to defend myself if it wasn't for the "Jackass," but I actually made the same observation commenting on one of my posts on MARCH 17TH. Check the last comment:

Either go accuse "iwatchstuff" of stealing, or consider the very real possibility that two people in the world saw the same version of the same movie.

Okay, I apologize for the jackass part. It is quite possible two people saw the same edited version of Die Hard. Have to admit I liked their suggested titles better though. http://iwatchstuff.com/tags.php?tags=Live%20Free%20or%20Die

Since you're allowed to use two F-bombs in a PG-13 flick, I assume his classic Yippie-ki-yay line will still be in there. At least, I hope it is. To cut that out would be a real shame.

Beeslo,
That's even funnier, I've got to find that clip somewhere.
Erik,
I'm not sure I've ever heard the word "Motherf***er" in a PG-13 flick, though. It's all about context, like the standards are much harsher if you use "F***" as a verb, for example. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

OMG, forgot about the "MR. Falcon" line , LOL, I remeber being like "WTF? That guys name wasn't even Mr. Falcon" the first time I saw that on T.V. Good call Patrick.
As far as F bombs in PG 13 I always thought you got one, but there have been a couple P 13 movies recently that had two in them. As far as Motherf***er goes, they had to cut that line short in Alien Vs. Predator so we'll have to wait and see. Although that line is the very heart and soul of the Die Hard saga and has been a part of my vocabulary since I first saw Die Hard.

I remember watching the same scene on one of our channels here in the UK (ITV) and they changed the line to "Yippee ki-yay kemosabe!" This was about 10 years ago and my brother and I still laugh about it now. Truly awful.

I'd forgive them for making it PG-13 if Samuel Jackson was in it.

I think that its great that this one is only pg-13. I just watched the first two and the language was out of control. Its not necessary to curse that much and have a movie be good. Everyone is making it sound like the new movie was going to have curse words and they were just going to bleep them out. But the simple fact of the matter is they didn't write the cursing into the new script. If you feel you NEED to have cruising in a movie in order to enjoy it then I think you have some serious problems.

Well, at least they will probablly release an unrated edition of the film on DVD so we can all get that great line.

Its not just the line tho, i've seen the trialer a few times, and he doesnt look f**ked up, i mean on the other movies, even through the first quarter or at the latest at the half way point, its like he's gone through a couple of wars and done the movie but i saw the trailer and it look he never had a cut. I hope that what we saw from it its just the start of the movie XD.
A die hard movie for me is John saying his best line, a cop going agasint all the odds, john lookin like he's been in a few wars, and big bangs lol. And as my girlfriend is sayin behind me "and his tank top in shedders"
