Mark Cuban Wants To Make Us Scoop Our Own Popcorn
Filed under: Independent, Box Office, Distribution, Exhibition
When Mark Cuban and Todd Wagner's production company -- 2929 Entertainment -- simultaneously released Steven Soderbergh's Bubble theatrically, on DVD, and on pay TV, the movie business went into an uproar. "They're killing the cinema!" people cried. To silence those haters, Cuban and Wager are now working on making going to the movies the kind of experience that will get butts off of couches nationwide. They plan to put millions of dollars into a theater model that will look more like your living room, complete with VIP chairs, sofas, and beanbags (could be cool). They want to have independent, foreign, and blockbuster films all at the same multiplex, like the Arclight in LA (cheers to that). They want to bring in higher-end food and drink, and are introducing a higher-priced ticket (is that possible?) which will include concessions and let the audiences serve themselves with something called the "Wall of Popcorn." Cuban and Wagner are unveiling their new concepts at three theaters in their Landmark chain -- locations in Baltimore, Denver, and at the Westside Pavilion in Los Angeles."Landmark's goal is to be the ultimate night out for grownups. Today's customer has different expectations than the customer of 10 and 20 years ago, and we need to recognize that and respond to it," says Cuban. "In our new Denver theater, we completely removed the concession stands. The original design had the traditional concession stand taking up prime real estate and dominating the look and feel of the theater. We decided that we would rather use that space for amenities, retail sales (movies, books, indie cinema related items), and 'interstitial' type entertainment that complements our 'datenight for grownups' concept in a lounge-like environment. Basically it became a place where you could go on a date, have a drink, food and be entertained before and after seeing a movie." Since theater-owners already hate Cuban after his day-and-date releasing plan, chances are that news of these theaters will not be greeted with open arms. I've got to say I'm all for it. Going to the theater is far too expensive to be as unpleasant as it so often is - why not experiment with the formula?

It's things like this that keep me excited with going to the cinema. As of late, going to the movies has almost been a chore due to the stale formula of most theaters, and the lackluster experience it brings. I thank Mark Cuban for at least thinking about movie goers and what THEY want.

if this concept is truly going "...to be the ultimate night out for grownups." will there be a minimum age for admittance? how about not allowing adults with infants and toddlers into R rated films? i stopped going to the theatre for several reasons, but the fact that thye have turned into a social gathering of teens and pre-teens, not to enjoy a film but to socialize during the feature with text messaging, answering phone calls and coming and going throughout the film was reason #1.
#2? parents bringing young children to adult themed films only to have the children begin crying and complaining, followed by the parent spending 10 minutes trying to calm them down before finally leaving, usually while yelling at the child as if it's their fault.

On paper it sounds great, but there are two problems with this:
1. If they're going to raise ticket prices even further, they sure as hell had better STOP showing @#$@%ing commercials before the movie starts.
2. Making it more of a comfortable, living room type environment is going to encourage even more idiots to talk at normal, conversation-level volume during movies.

cuban is just pissed that the mavericks lost to an 8th seeded team in the playoffs and blew a lead in last years finals ..... movies are movies only thing that needs to happen is that ticket prices need to go back to 7 dollars and popcorn down to 3 dollars.

There is nothing in the brief outline that suggest teens and pre-teens won't be there trying to "score" just as their adult counterparts.
What he's saying is he wants to jack up ticket prices even higher for the "ambiance". Has anybody ever wondered why people don't go to the movies as much?
I would wager it is is because of the high tickets prices first and the teenagers second. Any mature adult knows it is cheaper when you are trying to pay a car note, mortgage, rent, student loans, etc to rent or sign up for Netflix than pay the high cost of movie tickets, soda and popcorn.
Teens have disposable income that they don't mind blowing on two - three movies a week. Adults like to watch movies too, it's just we find a way to do it more economically and save going to the theater when there is truly something special.
Redesign the theaters sure, but don't increase ticket sales even more because you are throwing in a book store or "adult meeting space." If so, it will only be Cuban and his rich friends sitting there talking about how much they are enjoying the peaceful ambiance.

adult like:
mixed drinks
comfortable chairs
cell phones off
space to discuss movie after
eat dinner (already done at angelika in new york)
etc
turn it into an event like a play rather than something to do when you're bored and want to do something mindless.

I think this is a decent idea. I don't really need a couch or bean bag chair at the theater, but I do need an old fashioned usher who won't hesitate to kick people out if they don't shut the hell up during the movie.
And don't forget quality, unless a movie is showing at the newly installed DLP digital screen at my local theater, I don't go see it. It will look and sound better on Blu-Ray or HD-DVD at my house. Enforce the disruptive behavior and ensure the movie is going to look and sound its best and I'll gladly pay $15 bucks for a ticket.

We already have some of these VIP theaters in Mexico with very comfortable leather recliners, sushi and drinks bar and discreet waiters that serve you.
Of course here it is considered rude and uneducated for people to misbehave at the movies and I was shocked once at one of your multiplexes how people behave.
