Sony CEO Says Spider-Man Series Will Go "On and On..."

As soon as the big money rolls in, those movie executive eyes glaze over with candy-coated dreams of themselves swimming in sequels through seas of cold, hard cash. For months we've been wondering if the Spider-Man franchise would continue. They will, they won't and on and on. Last month, Tobey Maguire admitted that he would entertain the tights again if "there's a story worth telling." Kirsten Dunst continues to say that she'll reprise her role as long as Maguire and Sam Raimi are on-board.Now the BBC has reported that Sony Pictures exec Michael Lynton says: "Everybody has every intention of making a fourth, a fifth and a sixth and on and on." This comes on the heels of Spider-Man 3 beating Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest to become the most successful new release, having made $148 million in its opening weekend, despite questionable reviews. The question is: who is this "everyone?" The stars who have been sliding back and forth on the yes and no scale, or the guys behind the scenes who are itching to bring in more cash? Considering how apprehensive they've been about continuing the series, I can't imagine that Raimi or Maguire or itching for numbers 4-6. Lynton says that "when everybody comes up for air, we can think about how to make the next one." Will the stars stick, or should we start musing over replacements? Is there anyone that you're itching to replace? *cough* Mary Jane? *cough*

I think one of the reasons Spidey 3 was so muddled was because Raimi figured he wouldn't come back so he wanted to do as much as he could with this last one. He saw Sandman, Venom, Harry as Green Goblin and wanted to do all of them. Realistically, he probably knew that he would need at least another film to be able to do all of these villains, but he got lazy about it and decided to cram them in all at once. It was a very bad decision. Every time I think about how much better this movie could have been with just venom, or just sandman (with a more credible story-line of course), or heck, even with Harry not eating cotton candy and smiling like a goof half the time, I crush whatever I'm holding in my hand. Oh brother.

There are still huge untapped storylines in the comic books. I totally agree that the superhero formula should be kept to One Hero and One Villian every movie. One of the many short comings of film is the lack of time. Books (Including Comic Books) and Video games have the luxury of introducing many characters and providing in depth analysis on all of them. For Spiderman, I think a Movie about him fighting Carnage would be amazing. Unfortunately, you would probably have to forgo the Spidey and Venom team up that resulted in Carnage's defeat in the comic book, but so what? It's not like there is a terrible predisposition to stick to the comic books, nor should there be.

Sony CEO: Go to your room and think about what you have done. Then maybe, in a few years, you can come down and make some more movies.

I can't even begin to imagine how expensive a fourth one would be. 3 cost up to $500 million to make (including publicity), and a fourth film would only be more costly. Besides, there's a point where the villians just get too silly to film. Man-Wolf, anyone? There's only a couple of good ones left-Carnage and the Lizard, but Carnage may be too dark for a PG-13 film.

I loved spiderman3, but I agree that a fair criticism of the movie is that there was just too much going on. Sandman, or Venom, but not both would have been the way to go.
And people like to rag on Kisten Dunst, but I think she was great. It makes more sense to me that she isn't a supermodel, considering Peter Parker is the geeky kid. And btw, Kirsten is super hot! I'd take Kirsten any day over Kiera knightly..no one seems to want to replace her from pirates.

Raimi is used up. I'm tired of the 'Evil Dead' take on Spider-man. Here's my lineup for the replacements..
Peter Parker - Jake Gyllenhaal
Mary Jane - Isla Fisher
Directed by - Tony Scott
Ok, maybe I'm a bit overboard, but I sat through 3 wondering what it would be like if the film was more like Deja Vu, better cuts, more sinister.. I think the next one should bring back Venom and do the Maximum Carnage storyline..
On a side note, why not start putting some of these heroes together? Whats wrong with Spidey helping out the Fantastic Four, or Hugh Jackman doing a cameo? Or why not pull a LOTR and do a 3 or four part Secret Wars movie? Have the studio dump half a billion into it, make a huge awesome flick with a really sweet director, pay all the actors, and reap a gigantic profit. Just a thought...
