'Hairspray' Character Posters: Exclusive First Look
Filed under: Music & Musicals, New Line, Hold the 'Fone, Images
John Waters 1988 hit movie-turned-Broadway-musical is heading back to the big screen on July 20 -- this time as a musical -- with Adam Shankman (The Wedding Planner) at the helm and a bevy of A-list stars in the cast. We have an exclusive first look at 10 Hairspray character posters below, from an in-drag John Travolta to a still-smokin' Michelle Pfeiffer. Click on the images for larger versions.
Newcomer Nikki Blonsky stars as Tracy Turnblad, a chubby teen who wins a spot on the American Bandstand-esque Corny Collins Show in 1962 Baltimore. Amanda Bynes plays Tracy's saucy best pal Penny Pingleton.
John Travolta plays the plump Edna Turnblad, mother of the aforementioned aspiring dancer. Yes, that's correct: A virtually unrecognizable Travolta plays a woman. And he's married to Christopher Walken. Great stuff.
Michelle Pfeiffer plays the appropriately named Velma von Tussle (she likes a good fight), the scheming mother of Corny Collins Show dancing queen Amber (Brittany Snow). When Tracy makes the show and attempts to open it up to black dancers, these two are somewhat less than psyched and thus aim to destroy her.
DJ Motormouth Maybelle (Queen Latifah) and Seaweed J. Stubbs (Elija Kelley) are two of Tracy's staunchest supporters in her quest to integrate the show.
James Marsden plays Corny Collins, host of the eponymous dance show, who sets the events of the film in motion when he holds open dance auditions. The wildly popular star of the show is Link Larkin (Zac Efron), Amber's erstwhile boyfriend and the new object of Tracy's affection.

Travolta as Edna? No thanks. The fun thing about Divine and Harvey Fierstein is that they didn't need prosthetic makeup to make their character work. They were both believable women. Travolta's face is disturbing and distracting with a terrible White Chicks makeover.

Don't bother. NOTHING CAN BEAT THE ORIGINAL.
The new one is just crap, re-written to appeal to the cultureless, shallow-minded, simple-minded, politically correct wannabes.
In the immortal words of Penny Pingleton, "l wish l was at a hootenanny
in Harlem.

I think this movie is going 2 be Amazing. I think that Zac Efron is going 2 be the perfect Link, because he is already a prettyboy. Also I don't care what people say Jhon Travolta fits his part great and his voice is the voice of a mothers. I can't wait for it 2 come out I wan't 2 see it now, but my only concern is that Penny is a belter in the broadway show, and I hope Amanda Bynes can pull it off. But besides that I think it will Be A HIT, because u can't stop the beat.
