Robert Rodriguez in Talks to Direct 'The Jetsons,' Source Says
Filed under: RumorMonger, Family Films, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels
Meet George Jetson! His boy, Elroy! Daughter, Judy! Jane ... His wife! OK, I'm kind of hoping that this latest rumor has a good basis in fact. First, go here and check out the old Jetson's intro to refresh your memory. Now, imagine it shnazzed up and done by Robert Rodriguez. Can you see it? Even if Grindhouse flopped (crazy, lazy moviegoers!), the man has proven that he can make a good homage, so watching the intro I could definitely see a modernized version of the modern, Jetson's future. Now this all depends on the accuracy of El Mayimbe over at Latino Review. According to the site, movie and cooking dynamo Rodriguez is shmoozing Warner Brothers for the chance to take on The Jetsons as a live-action feature. Frankly, I can't think of anyone better for the job. This is one of those projects that could be truly terrible and result in a massive outbreak of bleeding eyes, if done by the wrong people. You've got to be able to respect the original work (check), make it fresh and eye-boggling (check) and have the know-how to make it come to life in a live-action way (check). The only concern: this won't stop Sin City 2, right? Mayimbe says he won't be surprised if it is done before the dark sequel. But hopefully not. Since this wouldn't be animated, who do you see playing the futuristic family? William H. Macy as George, Elizabeth Perkins as Jane, and then some cute kids?

I guess the first thing we should assume is that they will get the 3D version of Scooby Doo, change it a little bit and that's what they'll use for Astro. Not bad as the second Scooby movie was ok. And it's a great model for how to believably take cartoon characters and transition them with look-alike live actors (Matthew Lillard and Linda Cordellini specifically)
Secondly, can anyone other than Debra Jo Rupp (That 70's Show) be the voice of Rosie The Robot?
That being said, I think William H. Macy is too old for George. Got to have that everyman quality, so maybe Luke Wilson - about right age, look, etc.
For Jane, she's gotta be that futuristic MILF, hot yet still a mom and wife. I'm thinking it has to be Kristin Chenowith or Virginia Madsen (love them both)
For Judy Jetson, you could go with the obvious (Jessica Simpson, Lindsay Lohan) but I'd go for Hayden Pantierre (Heroes) as a different role for her.
Elroy, I can't think of anyone other than Angus T. Jones (Two and a Half Men). Which, makes me think that Jon Cryer might make a great George Jetson.
Mr. Spacely - gotta be Danny Devito.
Hope it is a good move and not a straight to DVD>

I love Elizabeth Perkins (she had me at "He Said, She Said"), but why here? Just because she was Wilma Flintstone?
How about, I dunno, Brooke Shields? Paired with maybe Jon Cryer? Just going by age here -- like Perkins, they'd have to be believable as parents of a teen. Oh, hey, Andy Dick! Just so we leave Jim Carrey out of it.
Do we have any hope of keeping Danny DeVito out of the Mr. Spacely role? I could see John Leguizamo packing on 40 pounds to do it.
About 30 percent serious here. The point is, as Monika says, there's a lot of potential here. Hope they don't paint by numbers and waste it.

I really see the studio calling on Will Ferrell to play George. But I do agree that Jane has to be a MILF. And Danny Devito is pretty much their only choice for Spacely.

This might be obvious but why do we need a Jetsons movie?

I have to agree with Monika Bartyzel that William H. Macy as George and Elizabeth Perkins as Jane would be perfect for the live-action roles. However, Liz Perkins was already Wilma Flintstone, so another choice would seem to be in order. 20 years ago, when I was hoping for a live-action Jetsons movie that Spielberg should have done, THE perfect choices for the roles would have been, without a doubt, Chevy Chase as George, Catherine O'Hara as Jane and Michael Vale of "Time to make the doughnuts" fame as Mr. Spacely. Since all these people are either too old now or dead, I would go with Monika's picks. And Danny DeVito is the ONLY Mr. Spacely that could pull it off these days.

it's about time that the jetsons is finally going to be made into a live-action move (not discounting the animated move done in the early 90's) picking the cast will be tough is some areas but it'll be pulled off great. having said that, danny devito no doubt will be picked to be mr. spacely. honestly, have you ever seen the boss over 5ft tal lol. cogswell in my opinion would go to tom arnold. have you seen him latly. he's big enough to play the part. rosie the robot how bout rosie o' donnel. she's better in movies anyways. now to george and jane jetson. how bout reuniting jim carrey and lauren holly. i think they will both make a good team like they did with dumb and dumber. as for judy jetson, i would go with hillary duff. she's still looks young and still got that teenager sizzle. elroy, that's a bit tough seein that theres not a lot of child stars then there was several years ago. let's not forget the cute little alien with the spring legs and suction-cup feet orbity. he should be voiced by howie mandel. let's not forget howie's voice talent when he provided the voice for gizmo in the gremlins movies. and seein the orbity and gizzo bout sound the same as far as voice goes, who would you pick? i'd pick howie. no matter who's cast to play in the movie i'd still go and see it when it comes out bein a jetsons' fan and all. hmmmm. if the dirctor can read this maybe theres a spot for me in the film :)

If Rosie O'Donnel or Will Ferrell are chosen I'll spit nails. Stop choosing people for their "celebrity" and choose those who can really pull the part together. (Will only wants to feel people up anyway.) PERFECT FOR ROLES? Remeber the Flintstones? Betty and Fred were perfectly cast...oh right. It stunk.
You get the best unknown/semi-known for most roles and a real ringer for one or two. I guess Spacely could be Danny Devito but really, is he the only choice? He stunk as the Penguin. I think one of the well known pop chicks would be good choices for Judy. Rosie the Robot will have to have a Dead On voice just like someone mentioned; the Mom from "That 70's Show." Who voices ASTRO? This is EXTREMELY important. OK, so he only goes RUTT ROE but if you don't get that right you might as well call it a day. Cogswell? I think that should be a well known as I think that charachter can be more of a draw if well cast than any of the others.
Cogswell...Evil so it needs a big name.
Judy...draws the teens so again you need a big name.
Rosie and Astro need perfect voices.
Elroy....it has to appeal to the young ones. This is a part for a break out star. It must be cast perfectly.
If the above is done perfectly, the others done well will pull it all together.
Oh, and can it possibly be G, no more than PG. Getting a PG-13 would be almost obscene but it would not surprise me the way things are going.

@Jonathan - I swear I didn't see your post before putting Cryer's name in the ring. How weird is that? And we came at it from different angles -- I was just thinking "skinny, nasal and could pull off the hairdo."
It's precisely because DeVito is such an obvious choice that Mr. Spacely has to go to anyone but him. How about Joseph Gannascoli (the late, unfortunate Vito from The Sopranos)?

This whole discussion is just surreal... if we can get past the fact that Hollywood wants to remake yet another classic cartoon, is anyone else leery about Robert Rodriguez' ability to direct this film??? I actually am a big RR fan for the most part. I love the whole Mexico trilogy as well as his other "adult" films but has the entire world forgotten the debacles that were Spy Kids 3-D or Sharkboy & Lavagirl??? Something tells me that The Jetsons will end up much closer to his kid flix than to Grindhouse.
Just a thought...
