George Lucas Talks New 'Star Wars' Films, Slams 'Spider-Man 3'
Filed under: Action, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, George Lucas, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels, Games and Game Movies
It's kind of amazing how well the team behind Fourth Installment of the Indiana Jones Adventure has kept information about the film from the press. "Steven (Spielberg) thinks we can keep the whole thing a secret," George Lucas said in a brief interview Monday night. "I explained to him that it's impossible nowadays. We can't live like that." Lucas had no problem opening up about some other upcoming projects, both having to do with Star Wars. He is currently preparing another series of Clone Wars -- the popular Star Wars animated series. In addition, Lucas will make two more live-action films set in everyone's favorite galaxy far, far away. These films will likely be an hour each, and will air on television, though he doesn't know on what channel (The Sci-Fi network?). Says Lucas of the films, "they won't have members of the Skywalker family as characters. They will be other people of that milieu." Very interesting...
Lucas got a little catty in the interview as well, when asked about the 2007 Summer movie season. He's seen nearly everything, because his company -- Industrial Light and Magic -- did special effects on nearly all of the big flicks except Spider-Man 3. Lucas joins what seems to be most of the commenters on this site in not being much of a fan of Spidey's third outing. Says Lucas, "It's silly. It's a silly movie. There just isn't much there. Once you take it all apart, there's not much story, is there?" Oh, George! "People thought Star Wars was silly, too," says Lucas. "But it wasn't." So there's nothing silly about any of the Star Wars films, Beardy? Nothing? The new Clone Wars is scheduled to air in 2008, and the live action Star Wars adventures -- said to take place between Episodes III and IV --are set for 2009.

i believe he's talking about what critics said about the first film in the series, you know, the one that was called "Star Wars" not the series of them.
there was no reason to be snide because he is right. Spiderman 3 was a terrible movie. these days box office receipts do not make a bad movie good, no matter how many poeople see it.

After making 3 consecutive awful, awful (though profitable) movies, Lucas is in no position to criticize any movie. "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" was more entertaining than his last 3 star wars movies. Let the flaming begin! ;-)

I like the idea about the one hour series. I can't comment on the Spidey stuff but based on the first two movies he is probably right.
I seem to remember back during the time the first trilogy was out in the late 70's, Lucas said he planned nine Star Wars movies - the first three being the middle, the next three prequels and the last three being sequels to the first three. I don't know whatever happened to that idea.

FWIIW Lucas had nothing to do with _Howard the Duck_. They gave him some money to put his name on as executive producer. A bad decision, but not as bad as those who made the film. Oh, and the HTD comic book was astounding.

hmm quite frankly i think the next two star wars films should center around the earlier days of the jedi and the sith. knights of the old republic. filling in back story would be a welcome change.

Lucas is a huge backtracker; he did say there would be a trilogy of trilogies -- that is, after STAR WARS went on to phenomenal success. Alan Dean Foster penned the first sequel, SPLINTER OF THE MIND'S EYE to be a "low-budget sequel" in case STAR WARS made a little money that summer of '77, and 20th decided to finance more episodes in Lucas' envisioned "Adventures of Luke Skywalker" series. When he made more money than god, he backtracked, rewrote, and revamped. SPLINTER became a novel instead.
In an interview (Bantha Tracks? Starlog? FantasticFilms?) Lucas said that the sequel would be Episode 5 of the series, and that STAR WARS was Episode 4. There would be three trilogies (remember, this was the birth of the trilogy, essentially, so it was all groundbreaking), with the one he was working on in the late 70s being the middle trilogy. As I recall, he didn't know which one would be worked on next.
Flash forward a decade or two and Lucas will say he didn't plan on three trilogies. That he had the whole story in mind when he did STAR WARS -- which, if it was true, why would he have Foster pen a cheapie sequel? He's also been quoted as saying that the HEIR TO THE EMPIRE trilogy is the officially-blessed third trilogy, and it will not be filmed (though with animation and CGI, maybe it should -- I always thought SHADOWS OF THE EMPIRE would make a cool little cartoon).
I'm not knocking Lucas -- he's an artist & director, but he's also a businessman. I've defended him in discussions time and again that he has every right to rework his films as many times as he wants to -- hell, add a version number to each release. Fine by me. (And FWIW, my vote is to clear out all the old special effects and replace them with CGI in the IV/V/VI triology. That's not popular, I know, but there you go.)
As for his comments on Spidey 3; meh, it's his opinion. He's entitled.

Agreed, the HOWARD THE DUCK movie was a disaster but the comic was great. And it was all business, as far as the movie goes; his name was just on it.

And to reveal my super-nerdom, it's the STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL, not the CHRISTMAS SPECIAL. Common mistake, eh?

The really funny thing is that I actually walked out of SM3 during the dance number and when I started telling my other fanboy friends about it I told them that the movie was "Phantom Menace" bad.
And I think it's OK for Lucas to be critical of other films. After all, he'd know what a sucky movie is, wouldn't he? He made millions off of three of the worst scifi movies ever, though I didn't walk out of those.

Ralph, you are absolutely correct and I bow to your super-nerdom.
Further, to save time at the nerd tribunal, I voluntarily relegate myself to mere nano-nerdom.
Luckily, that still qualifies me to play Sid Meier games.

The three Star Wars prequels are way better than the original trilogy. And, in my opinion, the last two Spider-Man films have been horrible.

Wow, Lucas is retarded!!!
He tried to make the last 3 Star Wars movie some grand allegory on the nature of politics, good/evil, and human relationships. Lucas showed he understood none of the above when making the prequel trilogy, nor any grasp of how to create entertaining drama.
Spiderman 3 was freakin' great. I don't understand the hate for the "Saturday Night Fever" sequence. It's hilarious!!! Lucas is jealous cuz that was freakin' funny, and all Lucas could come up with for humor was Jar-Jar Binks. The makers of Spiderman 3 understood the nature of human relationships, folly, love and forgiveness; things that George Lucas - after years of being isolated and corrupted by his gobs of cash - only understands as "silly."

I guess this goes to prove, to whatever little extent it can, that Lucas is at least the lesser of the two evils bent on creating awful remakes of the 80s/90s masterpieces.
Just like they showed on Southpark.
