Moviefone's 25 Best Sequels of All Time
Filed under: Remakes and Sequels, Hold the 'Fone, Summer Movies
'Tis the summer of sequels! Or maybe that was last summer. Better yet, Summer '05 sure had a lot of them. OK, so we can probably all agree that summer has become synonymous with movie sequels, and with more than a dozen hitting theaters over the next three months, Moviefone thought the time proper to honor the crème de la crème
in our ranking of the 25 best movie sequels of all time.
We have to say, it was a much more painless process than usual in combing the inventory here. That's probably because there aren't THAT many truly classic sequels, and for every Terminator 2, there's 10 Jaws: The Revenge and Be Cools out there. There were still a few on the bubble, though, and we're sure we'll hear from the masses about some of the omissions, like a certain swashbuckler sequel. Personally I'm disappointed no one around here shares my affinity for Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo. If loving that movie is wrong, I don't want to be right.
But what are your favorite sequels of all time? What did we miss? And what sequel(s) releasing this summer will have us scurrying to revise?

"Spider-Man 3"Rocked!
C'mon you had the turmaltoius friendship of Peter Parker(Spidey), and Harry Osborn(New Goblin, still believing Spidey Killed His Father)A Blak Suitted Spidey (Peter Parker Giving In To His Dark Side) a Hot Love Triangle (Spidey,M.J.,and Gwen Stacey)
Plus Three Awesome Villians.(Sandman,Venom,Peter Parker's Inner Demons)
Awsome Sequel
While we're on the subject of third movies kicking ass, how about?
"Back To The Future III"
"Scream 3"
Harry Potter, and The Prisioner Of Azkaban"
Worst Sequels are,
"The Lost World:Jurasic Park"
The Only thing I liked in it were The Stegos.
(A T-rex loose in San Diego, What A Joke!)
"The Curse:The Blair Whitch Project 2"
It totaly riuns the mystque ot the original!
(Let's Not Talk About "Blair Whitch 3"!)
"Exorsits:2&3"
The should stopped with the fist.
"Child's Play 2",and every sequel there after. (Including "Bride, and Seed Of Chucky")
See "Exorsits:2&3"!
"Hellraiser 2",and beyond
Not as Scary as the first.
"The Rage:Carrie 2"
They're all going to laugh at you!!(For making this movie)
"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III"
Go to www.Screwattack.com, and look at the review by THE ANGRY VIDEO GAME NERD for commentary.
"Jaws:The Revenge"
Where do you want me to start?
1."Jaws3-D"(Which is also bad, but not as bad as this)NEVER HAPPENED!
2.It takes place in The Carribien, NOT Amitty Island!
Plus, It's Mrs. Brody (Not The Shark) that wants Revenge.
Yeah,I hate to piss off ElN, and LordPaul!(No I dont!)
But "Back To The Future II" also sucked!(Not nearly as good as the first, or BOTFIII)

I agree with the top 10, and even some of the others in the Top 25, but come on...Die Hard 2? Christmas Vacation? Both of those paled in comparison to Die Hard With A Vengeance and European Vacation. Before Sunset? Did anyone even SEE that? After The Thin Man and Bride Of Frankenstein? Is anyone even alive who saw those? How about Star Wars Episode 3, Shrek 2, Back To The Future 2 & 3, Airplane 2, American Pie 2 or American Wedding, Matrix: Reloaded, or Pirates Of The Caribbean 2? As far as movies coming this summer that should make your list: Spider-Man 3, Shrek 3, Pirates Of The Caribbean 3, Bourne Ultimatum, and maybe even Fantastic Four 2 (OK, maybe that's a stretch!). Maybe you could expand to the Top 50? That way, you could include all of these, some more, and still keep the weird, off-beat, and not-better-than-the-original sequels you put in there.

Two really bad choices!
"Terminator 2" seriously blew it in trying to make Schwarzenegger's character a good guy, and made it even worse by making him cute and child-friendly.
"Aliens 2" was all violence and shock effects, completely missing the real suspense of the original, not to mention the quirky, interesting characters and the thoughtful science-fictional treatment of aliens and their nonhuman motivations.

How can you list 25 sequels and not mention the James Bond movies. Through almost 50 years and six stars they are still extremely popular.

My husband and I agree...the number one movie that should have been somewhere on that list but was not is Back to the Future 3. Christmas Vacation should NOT have been on that list. Even Shrek 2 did not get recognized!

I like all the Die Hard movies, but it sure seems like #3 never gets any love. Don't know why, it was an action knockout, had Samuel Jackson, Jeremy Irons as the baddie, a great team of fellow cops helping McClane---just a fun, tense sequel.
I agree with Spider-Man 3 being a superior sequel, and any list that includes Aliens is fine with me. Bride of Frankensteing is fine, but the follow-up, Son of Frankenstein is by far the better sequel. Just watch Young Frankenstein and see how many more things from "Son" that Mel Brooks parodies.
Lethal Weapon 2 should have made it.

I am surprised, that no one mentioned the Mummy Returns! That was a Great Sequel! And to name some,
god awful Sequels,well..here are a few..
SUPERMAN RETURNS: The Plot was Dumb. The Special
effects,were lousy!The Director,was trying to
hard,to copy off the First Spider Man Movie story
arc. And Superman, the Man of Steel, falling into
a coma..and being revived in a hospital,please..
how dumb can that be!!That writer who wrote this,
had to be falling out drunk!
BLADE TRINITY: WOW!! Here's another baaad Sequel!
With Dracula,(the strongest,and eldest,of all the
Vampires)saying something to Blade,like :
DRACULA
HMM..MUTHER******.I LIKE THAT!
Besides dumb dialogue, how in the world, are a group,
of super bad ass,Gun and Sword, plus Bow and Arrow
Totin Vampire Killers, gonna walk down,a Bustling
New York city Street,in broad day Light, and not
get arrested?!! How? ANY BODY?

WHERE may I ask is PIRATES 2!!!! BEST sequal EVER. Maybe thats just because I've seen both movies more times than I can count, know basically every line to both of them, have been looking forward with more anticipation than you can imagine to Pirates 3 for the last YEAR and am generally obsessed. But that's not the point. WHERE IS PIRATES!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's an outrage!!!!!!!!! I'm so ridiculously ticked off.

What a disgraceful load of revisionist nonsense. I appreciate the sensitivity of reaching into a film history archive to pull out After the Thin Man and Bride of Frankenstein out -- to prove I guess that sequels DID exist pre 1970. Of course you could have done as well with some Shelrock Holmes and Tarzan outings as well. But what really amazes me is how you could overlook every James Bond movie ever made in a story on sequels. Subjectivity is one thing but as good as Dr No -- the first Bond feature film by the way -- was not From Russia With Love, Goldfinger and Thunderball even better? And that just covers the first four...not one worth mentioning in the next 18 films? Come on guys...sequels didn't begin with the Rings Trilogy, the Spiderman series and X-Men...Perhaps the problem is that those deciding have no reference points for anything other than the latest releases.

Best by what criteria? Entertainment value? Box office? Pathos? At best you have 12 solid choices and 13 lackluster ones. "Thin Man" is charming but not a best of qualifier. "Sunset" is boring as is "Aliens" and "Dawn". Leaving out POTC 2 is not acceptable, nor is ignoring ANY Sean Connery Bond sequel. A definate nod should go to Lethal Weapon 2, Beverly Hills Cop 2 and Patriot Games. And yes BTTF 2 & 3 made for best of entertainment way back then just as they do today.

Terrible article. Did the writer scan the shelves of Blockbuster before cranking this out? Absolutely no sense of film knowledge.
