Orlando Bloom: 'Even the Writers Can't Explain 'Pirates 3'
Filed under: Action, Comedy, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Disney, Scripts, Family Films, Johnny Depp, Remakes and Sequels
Did you have trouble following the plot of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest? Well, get ready to be more confused by the next installment, which arrives in theaters May 25. Entertainment Weekly has a cover story about the movie in its latest issue, hitting newstands (and my mailbox) today, which includes quotes from stars Orlando Bloom and Johnny Depp and director Gore Verbinski. All three seem to be in agreement that audiences and critics are going to have just as tough a time with Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. Bloom goes so far as to joke that writers Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio can't even explain what's going on in the new movie. Verbinski claims he doesn't mind if people are confused, though. He says the Pirates movies are made to be watched multiple times in order to be fully clear to the viewer. Of course, he seems to think that having a convoluted story means having a deep and intelligent story, because he goes on to tell the magazine that he doesn't want to dumb the movies down to where they are "processed cheese". He wants us to think about Pirates of the Caribbean afterward. Funny, I am one of the few critics who was able to enjoy Dead Man's Chest, but I never once thought about it afterward. Except maybe to tell someone how cool the Davy Jones character looks.
As for the critics, who universally panned the second movie (I didn't review it, unfortunately), Depp says they are going to attack At World's End just as much if not more. He understands the reasons why critics took "a dump" on the previous film, predicts that they'll "go below the belt" with the new film, and he says it's all "cool". The villains from the movies had a bit to say on the subject, too. Geoffrey Rush says that when you're doing such complex stunts and action sequences, you can't be thinking of the critics. Bill Nighy adds that the grosses point to the idea that the movies are doing something right, implying that the minority opinions of film reviewers don't seem to matter. Of course, Nighy will never have to worry about what critics say about him, as he's one of the most enjoyable actors working today. And Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End will likewise not have to worry about negative reviews, because it will make a bundle regardless -- that is, as long as enough people don't care about being confused again.

Where does the idea that DMC was universally panned by critics come from? It wasn't. The Rotten Tomatoes score is over 50%. It was very nearly fresh.

I just don't get it what's the fuzz with this Pirate craze. Yes, Pirates 1 was fun, but it was a forgettable movie for me, and one I only watched once because it was basically "processed cheese".
I was once asked to go to the theater, and had to choose between re-watching Terminator 3 or Pirates. I chose T3.
Then, some time later I was forced to watch Pirates again. I fell asleep. That made me think enough of just not watching Pirates 2, and well... it seems that these times are making everyone go for a trilogy. Recently, these "trilogies" have sucked horribly.
So, I'm half expecting Pirates 3 to bomb, or at least to suck on an infinite scale.

The pirate movies appeal to such a wide range of ages. When critics have to pay to see a film then their high and mighty attitudes concerning blockbuster films may change. Obviously, the main ingredient is Depp's character that's not anything like any pirate that's been in film. The acting from everyone is first rate. As for a confusing plot, my 8 year old niece, 22 year old son, 16 year old daughter, 80 year old mother and my husband and I, all were able to follow the film. It generated a lot of discussion and had to be seen again to capture details that were missed the frist time around. In addition, for a sequel, it was one of the most original plots I've seen. Give me a pirates film anyday over Spiderman, Superman, etc. that tend to rehash the same storyline but maybe throw in an extra villian. Apparently millions of people around the world agree as the box office numbers showed last year. I'm sure AWE will be just as successful if not more so and I already have my tickets for opening weekend.

I'm confused -
what was so confusing about "Dead Man's Chest"? I thought it was a brilliant movie with excellent and cheeky references to history and famous characters and lauded pirate situations. Sure, the ending was kind of abrupt, but it was fairly original to let it be such a question mark at the end as to how Jack Sparrow can keep surviving as he does. But that's part of the charm of the thing, and everybody is going to overlook the fact that back in them days these characters would've been lucky to have seen each other twice if ever once they left for the world on the otherside of the planet.

Wait, people were confused by that sh!tstorm of stupid called Dead Man's Chest? Reminds me of a conversation I overheard one day:
Teen 1: 'The Matrix" is like totally deep.
Teen 2: "I got 'The Matrix' the FIRST time I watched it."
Bravo...one time to "get" a film that wasted 1 hour belaboring its basic concept.

POTC2 was not confusing to a lot of people I know. It just depends on if you get it or not. Personally, I think POTC3 will be a fantastic movie, as all the others were. Its peoples personal opinions on whether they liked something or not.
If you can understand the Matrix, POTC should be like, kindergarden stuff.

To me, I think people more so got lost in Dead Man's Chest than confused. there were quite a few scenes that were just long and the 'action' wasn't all that great which caused me to get bored and forget what the hell was even going on...

As a Navy veteran, I thought DMC was ridiculous. Davey Jones isn't a man with an octopus face and tentacles, for heaven't sake.
And the "krake" was just plain silly. The krake is a species of squid and has only ten arms, two long gripping and eight normal. No member of this biological family has teeth, let alone a ring or two of them.

It's not supposed to be based on true fact, they took simple (for lack of better word) fairy tale characters and added more depth to them.

They didn't "add depth", they destroyed what could have been a real hair-raiser.
