J.K. Rowling Talks Possible Eighth Harry Potter Book

Just when you thought Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was going to be the seventh and final book in J.K. Rowling's billion-dollar series, the author has suggested that she might indeed write an eighth book which will serve as a sort of Harry Potter encyclopedia. So no, we won't get another Potter adventure, but this might be a chance to flesh out under-used characters, as well as let fans fully immerse themselves in the Potter world. Says Rowling, "I might do an eighth book for charity, a kind of encyclopedia of the world so that I could use all the extra material that's not in the books."
Rowling's agent, Christopher Little, confirmed the possibility admitting that the author has "retained all the rights in the Harry Potter series." That includes any and all companion books "which she may indeed write herself." Apparently, Rowling's notes are extremely detailed; sort of like the notes JRR Tolkien jotted down for his Lord of the Rings series. Thus, it would be fairly easy for her to dive into a decade worth of notes and churn out an encyclopedia-type book. According to Telegraph UK, such a book would "cover historical figures, such as the founders of Hogwarts school, along with elaborate genealogies of the main characters." Of course, with something like this, there's no way we can look forward to another big-screen installment. I can see it now: Kids everywhere would attempt to sit through Harry Potter and the Magical Encyclopedia, however, half-way through, they would all cry out: "Ugh, it wants us to learn!" That said, I imagine it might be fun to get the actors to appear on some sort of companion DVD. What do you Potter fanatics think of this? Would you enjoy reading a Potter encyclopedia, or would you rather read another full-on Potter adventure? Then again, do I even need to ask that question?

I agree with Eric - the title is most unfortunate as it implies another book in the storyline when in fact the book is a companion piece.
In fact, if we're going down this route, it would be the tenth Harry Potter book anyway as Rowling has already published "Quidditch Through the Ages" and "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" (two mini "schoolbooks" for Comic Relief 2001)...

I would happily read a book like that. I think her writing would make it more of a story=like setting, as opposed to a learning book. Maybe kids would be bored with it, but I think fans my age (late 20's) would be interested. And I didn't even know she wrote those other books that Ian mentioned. I've never seen them in a book store. the seventh book isnt even out yet here in the u.s., I can't wait!

I think ten solid and very long years of Harry Potter madness is more than enough. She has milked this one for all it is worth. Time to move on.

"Quidditch Through The Ages" and "Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them" are available as a boxed set - she wrote them for Comic Relief UK. You should check them out, Kelly - they're pretty funny, even though they're "textbooks." But she has said this for a while - I thought maybe she'd given a new interview or something, but she first said this ages ago.

It sounds like a cash grab to me. Unless she makes it that 100% of the after tax pile of gold this will bring in goes to charity, I'll never buy it. Either way I'll never read it. It's too easy to say something will benefit charity and its all really BS!

I'm appalled that some think this is a matter of money. Rowling's far from money hungry; she just happened to have written an historic series that's captured the imagination of the world. When you sell as many books as she has, you get plenty of money. That's the way it works. Why be so cynical to assume that everyone's motivated by money all the time? She loves what she does, which is why we all do too. She's a master of her craft, and we've been privileged to see her work take shape, a series that folks will still be reading and loving and talking about hundreds of years from now. Of course we'd all love to read another full-on Harry adventure, but she won't do it unless she has an idea for an organic extension of the story, but the arc is likely through after the seventh book, thus ending an incredible series. Real Potter fans would love the encyclopedia, because they recognize that what we have in the books is so coherent and consistent because of extensive and meticulous planning on Rowling's part. The encyclopedia would help us understand, more of the lovely mind that created this phenomenal set of stories. Those who think she's motivated by money need to realize their comments say much more about themselves than anything about Rowling.

I think many of you are cynics. I think it's a wonderful chance for her to utilize interesting information she has stored away, a chance for a needy charity to get some income, and a chance for Potter Fans to get some closure. I'd get it. My son would love to look up background information on lesser known characters and creatures. Sign me up!

A learning 'thing' would be great! Isn't that what adult reading is basically about? Tolkien gave enough background to build a world in our mind years ago. Now with Rowling's popularity in Harry Potter, it's time to answer some more questions we didn't get in the novels or at least put them in order. As far as charity or not, any portion of given would still be better than nothing. And who are we to say once someone makes it they have to give it away. Look at the positive side of magic. Life is better than the dark side.

I think that no matter how much money JK Rowling makes, she has done more for children's literacy than any other writer or politician has in the last century. We need more writers who are like her and capture people's interest so they will read for pleasure instead of sitting in front of the computer or video games.

with me!! Thank you for years of intrigue, humor,

such a series as to induce millions of "children" of
all ages to pick up a book and read and read and

I think would be awesome.. I love the history of middle earth. It great to see more of a story than just the few books we get to read. The whole world behind the story is sometime as good as the stories themselves. It wouldn't been any different than all the "Special" featurs on a dvd.

I think I'd have to say that Chuck just read book 6 and seems to think it was 7. Simply because I work at a library and I know very well that book 7 is not released until July 21st in the US and probably shortly before that in Europe. Which isn't soon enough in my opinion. A wonderful series of books, but it's definitely time to move on to something else.

Well, I am over 55 and love the Harry Potter series. I am loathe to read the 7th book for fear of losing Harry and would love to know the series would somehow continue.
