'Serenity' Special Edition Specs and Cover Art!
Filed under: Action, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Universal, Home Entertainment, Comic/Superhero/Geek
A few months back we learned that a 2-disc special edition of Joss Whedon's Firefly spinoff, Serenity, was on the way. And now, because I'm such a pathetic nerd when it comes to this particular TV series / movie, I'm elated to share the news on what'll be included on that dual-platter release (which hits the shelves on August 21). Plus there's some pretty nifty cover art ... but let's focus on the extra goodies right now. Here's what you'll find on the Serenity 2-disc special edition, and I'll italicize the stuff that was not on the single-disc release that you probably already own and have watched about 14 times:
- Audio commentary with writer/director Joss Whedon
- Audio commentary with Whedon and actors Nathan Fillion, Adam Baldwin, Summer Glau and Ron Glass
- Joss Whedon introduction
- Deleted scenes with optional Whedon words
- Extended scenes
- Outtakes
- Featurettes:
- "Take a Walk on Serenity"
- "Green Clan"
- "We'll Have a Fruity Oaty Good Time!"
- "A Filmmaker's Journey"
- "Future History: The Story of Earth That Was"
- "Re-lighting the Firefly"
- "What's in a Firefly?"
- "Session 416"
(Again, the italicized goodies are the "new" ones, unless you own all of the international Serenity DVDs, in which case the second commentary is the only truly NEW item. I think. I'm sure a smarter Browncoat than I will come along and correct any glitches I may have made.) And yes, this is the original theatrical cut: No "added scenes" or "director's cut" gimmickry here. Plus the cover art is pretty damn slick, albeit not exactly what I was expecting. I snipped a little section out for this post, but you can check out the full goods over at DVDActive.com. Pretty gorram shiny.

I dont know. I have the regular edition when it came out and it had most of that stuff. The exception being, Green Clan, Session 416, and the new commentary. Fruity Oaty bar was an easter egg. Course I imagine I still will be getting it lol! Browncoats baby!! Any chance its being released on HD as well?

Are the extended scenes just a feature or are they included in the movie itself?

The thing that pisses me off is that he (Joss) said that he wasn't going to be releasing any "special editions" or "collector's set". I understand that this may not have been his decision, but it still pisses me off to see this released. I love the movie & the show, but I'm not going to drop another $20-$30 for this version. He's not doing a 2nd movie so I don't see any reason to give Universal more of my money.

Actually, Joss warned back before the first Serenity DVD came out that they might be a second one coming later because he wanted a cast commentary but Universal wanted to rush one out before Christmas. So, forewarned, I wasn't bothered by double-dipping; I was bothered it might not sell enough to warrant the second release and I'm glad it did. And you know it'll be on sale for cheaper, when has the SRP ever been the store price? Amazon has it for $18 and Best Buy will prolly have it on sale the first week...

No. The US edition also did not have "Take a Walk on Serenity" nor "A Filmmaker's Journey", although the R4 editio did.
"The thing that pisses me off is that he (Joss) said that he wasn't going to be releasing any 'special editions' or 'collector's set'."
No, he didn't say this. What he said was there would never be a "director's cut" because the movie as released was the director's cut.
