Another Movie About the 2012 Apocalypse -- This One is for the Kiddies
Filed under: Action, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Paramount, Family Films, Religious
In about five-and-a-half years, the world will supposedly end. Don't worry, though, because it will be a lot of fun. That is the impression I get from Nickelodeon Films, anyway. The kid-friendly division of Paramount is making an action-adventure for the whole family that is based on the idea that the apocalypse is coming in December of 2012. Called simply 2012, the movie will be about a family vacation during that fateful month when, according to the Mayan calendar, and some UFO theorists, something devastating is expected to take place. 2012 will be written by Tom Astle and Matt Ember, and it will probably be directed by Tom Dey -- all three of whom were responsible for Failure to Launch. This is the second movie we've heard about so far that has to do with the Mayan doomsday prediction. The first is an adaptation of Whitley Streiber's upcoming book 2012: The War for Souls, which Michael Bay is making for Warner Bros. Though Nickelodeon's 2012 should be much lighter in tone, I have to assume that the whole premise will still be a bit scary for the intended audience -- unless kids these days just aren't afraid of the end of the world as much as I was (and honestly still am). According to Variety, those involved with 2012 have some time before they'll be able to get started on the movie. Currently, Astle and Ember are writing the direct-to-video spin-off Get Smarter: Bruce and Lloyd Out of Control and reportedly Dey is expected to be committing to other projects ahead of this one. The trio better not take too long, though, because they're running out of time. In only six years, either the movie will lose all relevance, or we won't be around to see it.

There's nothing like a good 'end of the world by way of Apocalype from the religion of your choice' movie. I think. I mean, I'm still waiting for the first really good one. End of Days by Arnie wasn't quite the best and I know there was another one which was so undistinguished that I can't even remember enough of it to google it.
And on the other hand, a couple more movies involving Mayan culture, looks like Mel Gibson started something here. I wonder if they will picket these movies for portraying the Mayan culture in a bad light as well.

it's not a doomsday prediction. according to the maya, it merely marks a change in history. we either go to the next level or spiral into obscurity and extinction. it's not a big bang type event. it's a subtle marking of the passing of a new time...according to the maya.

If you're in New York, Culture of Contact is throwing Strieber a booklaunch for 2012: The War For Souls. The book comes out Sept. 18th but the launch is on the 20th. For more info, check out www.cultureofcontact.com
And here's something interesting.... Yesterday Strieber posted a journal on his website about a series of "crop circles" that are actually Mayan language saying that a series of catastrophic events will occur btwn todays and the 19th, one of which is an earthquake. Whelp, 7.9 in Peru today. Peru. Mayan langauge crop formations. Coincidence?

Well I'm only 13 and I just read a bulletein that was posted on Myspace about it. 2012 is my graduating year... and i don't know. I'm pretty scared. But I've been doing research and there has been tons of other predictions that didn't come true... honestly i don't think children should be learning aobut this because I'm scared and I don't want to picture a 7 year old imagining it.

Well if you see the future as linear on default but able to change through events occuring due to other events(believing in free will) you could theorize that, through other metaphysical medias, you could catch a glimpse of the linear future.
This means that it is never completely set in stone that the "main future" will occur. Discussing the probability of "default events" not occuring could be discussed.
When you think hard there's so little we know of the world.

It seems an odd choice for a kids film I must admit, but I will be watching out for this one and doing a review for my site as soon as possible. By the way if you want to understand the general buzz about this year feel free to visit my site.

Why do people think 2012 will be the end of the world? I mean what if the Mayans ment that was the end of the way things worked now. Sort of age unlike that of the previous ones. That this new age starting at 2012 will not be a repeat cycle like before. Strange movie idea though.
