The Dark Is Rising -- The First Pics

Late last week, Fox Walden, the new family-oriented off-shoot of 20th Century Fox, sent me over this batch of pics from The Dark is Rising, which is currently filming in Romania. Based on the Arthurian-style fantasy book series by Susan Cooper, the story follows the adventures of a boy who learns that he is the last of a group of immortals who must confront forces of evil and become a great warrior. This first film adaptation is being directed by David Cunningham and prepped for a fall 2007 release, and will presumably be the start of an entire series if things go well at the box office. Fox's answer to the Narnia franchise, or something like that. The Dark is Rising is actually the title of the second book in the series. Before it comes Over Sea, Under Stone and after it comes Greenwitch, The Grey King and Silver on the Tree, so they certainly won't run out of stories to tell anytime in the next decade.

I thought it was sensational news to read that this film is being made. I have read and re-read these books and there are brilliant.
Now I find out they have turned Will into a 14 year-old and not 11 and he's American instead British - pathetic in the extreme!
No chance in the world I'll be watching this - by making these majors changes they have already destroyed the original story.

Did Susan Cooper actually take part in this? If she did, they ignored her.
Looks like it was VERY loosely based on the books.
How are they going to get the Thanmes to flood in deepest New Hampshire?
Another example of Hollywood taking over a wonderful story and Americanising it.

When I saw the Dark Is Rising poster I was so excited I pulled out my hardcover books that I had bought in the early 80's and shared them with my daughters. When I saw the trailer my heart sank. Will Stanton with an iPod? Will Stanton concerned about girls? The boy actor seemed too aloof. The Will Stanton of the book is an old soul even before his self discovery.
Plus, I love Ian Mcshane...but as Merriman Lyons? Merriman is a noble and dignified character with distinguishing wispy white hair. Ian is best known as the foulest of all bar keeps in HBO's Deadwood series. Would such vile language ever
leave the lips of Merriman?

The answer is, "Of course not! But isn't that why it's called ACTING? He's a fine actor who has played many roles before the bar keep in Deadwood, and I never pictured those characters when watching Deadwood. To judge before seeing is both pointless and an insult to McShane.

I saw the trailer last night. It took me a few minutes to realize that it was "The Dark is Rising"
I loved the books, and I cannot believe they made Will into an American. The books are so specifically English, the location, language, history, folklore and myth are all ENGLISH. Did Susan Cooper have anything to do with this?
