'Sunshine' Bumped Up For July Release
Filed under: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Distribution, Fox Searchlight, Newsstand
Although my birthday present from Fox Searchlight arrived a bit late, it was well worth the wait -- Cinematical was just informed (via a press release) that Danny Boyle's Sunshine has had its release date pushed up to July 20; a move that put a huge smile on my face as we come to the end of a relatively tame Wednesday. For those slightly out of the loop on this one, Sunshine was originally supposed to be released this past March 16. And although the film arrived in theaters around the world (as planned) Fox Searchlight delayed its release here in the states, subsequently pushing it all the way back to December. To say us Boyle fans were a tad bummed out about that would be an understatement -- as our own Scott Weinberg proclaimed, "That's like walking into a kid's room on 12/15 and saying, 'Oh, we bumped Christmas back to September. Stop crying!'"
Fox provided no reason for either shift; originally, some of us thought that maybe they were prepping the flick for an Oscar run, but it didn't seem like the sort of film (futuristic sci-fi?) that Oscar voters chomp on for breakfast. Was it that bad that Fox wanted to re-tool the thing and hide it amongst a busy Compass-filled December? Not likely; the trailers rock, and the buzz has been pretty good. Nevertheless, I could care less at this point -- I just want to see the damn film as quickly as possible. In the pic, director Boyle and writer Alex Garland once again team up for a story about a group of astronauts (Rose Byrne, Chris Evans, Cillian Murphy, Troy Garity, etc ...) who are sent to help re-ignite the sun after the sucker begins to burn out. Mark your calendars people. Sunshine. July 20. Awesome stuff!

I've seen this movie in Argentina, and I in my opinion it really sucked. 4 points out of 10.

"Awesome stuff"? Oh, please. Only if "zero characterization," "questionable philosophy," "smart people doing really stupid things," "plotholes the size of Mars," "random, redundant F/X," and "preposterous third-act script-twist" equal "awesome stuff." Not in my book they don't. Garland and Boyle have produced an egg of epic proportions here, and I feel sorry for fans of the actors involved.

Finally! I've seen the bootleg version a couple times and I can't wait to see it on the big screen. It's not a perfect film but is definitely worthwhile.

I liked it more than Kim did, but I recommend you temper your enthusiasm a bit. It's worth seeing, but hardly 'awesome'.

I saw it in Mexico like ten days ago... it's not even in theatres anymore...
I was trhilled with the trailers, I like sci-fi..
but the movie was slow and when it became a little faster it had some FX that did not let you see the bad guy...
so if you expected something like 28 days later, well this is not it... not by a bit, even if C. Murphy is on screen again with Boyle...

*yawn* somebody's clearly expecting too much of the new Danny Boyle flick. Apart from the obvious references to Kubrick's "2001" and Tarkowsky's "Solaris" and by the end, to "Alien", this film just cannot decide what it wants to be, and that's exactly were it fails miserably:
sci-fi existentialist drama? thriller? horror flick? Pick the one you like.

What the hell is wrong with everyone? This was an awesome, amazing piece of work. Far and away the best thing Danny Boyle's ever done, and one of the best sci-fi films in years. It's an astonishing film.

Over at The CillianSite (http://cilliansite.com), we're wondering if this wide release includes Canada. Does the press release say?

I like "awesome" and "amazing" films to be slightly more lacking in "supposedly smart people doing incredibly dumb things." I also like "a&a" films that don't rely on shock-and-awe (or is that "shock and yawn/headache"?) camerawork to cover for shortcomings in the script department. Oh, and I like "a&a" films to have more than snipey, whiney paper-thinness in the character department. Or are those criteria of bygone cinematic ages...?

When is this film going to be released in more than 7 theaters in America. I want to see it, but it only plays in a few big cities.
