Warner Bros. Gets Another Fantasy Franchise: 'Skullduggery Pleasant'
Filed under: Comedy, Horror, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Deals, Mystery & Suspense, Warner Brothers, Family Films
What movie will be the next Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone? That's what all of Hollywood is wondering as each studio gobbles up the rights to every series of youth-oriented fantasy novels it can. Warner Bros. is likely one the most desperate to find out; the Potter movies have been a big cash cow for the studio, and come 2010 there won't be any more to distribute. One hopeful franchise to take Potter's place is Skullduggery Pleasant, a comedic, kid-friendly, horror-mystery novel about a skeleton detective and the 12-year-old girl who helps him out. WB has just beat out other studios to acquire the rights to Skullduggery, as well as sequels -- so far there is only one book published, but there are expected to be nine in total. The Dublin-set books are written by Derek Landy, who has been hired to pen the adaptation of the first film himself. Landy does have some prior screenwriting experience with the non-kid-friendly horror films Boy Eats Girl and Dead Bodies. The movie will be produced out of London by Peter Czernin and Graham Broadbent, who last gave us the little seen horror pic Wind Chill. As for casting, we can assume there will be a brand new face sought out for the part of 12-year-old Stephanie, while the title character will probably be computer generated (he's the skeleton). With a non-human protagonist, the Skullduggery movie will have to be something really special to be a sub for the Potter pics, with their lovable trio of relatable teens. But there's a chance that if Warners markets the thing well, by having the young girl appeal to female audiences and the skeleton somehow appeal to the male audience, then the studio could at least have a minor hit. Otherwise, I feel like this could be the next Lemony Snicket instead.

This is like some terrible nightmare I can't wake up from! Everywhere I turn a great teen fiction novel is being made into a movie! (Twilight, A Great and Terrible Beauty, Maximum Ride, Wicked Lovely and others) Not that that's a BAD thing, but it is such a dissapointment when great books are turned into purely a money making scheme (cough harry potter cough) Skullduggery is such a great book! I just hope the quirky humor of the story won't be ...missplaced somewhere during production.
Why the younger audience? I reckon you'd be better off pitching it to mid-teens (14-17), aim any younger and it'll just end up cheesy and meaningless.
I guess your aiming it at kids the same age as Stephanie, but I always imagined Stephanie as a bit older (she's a little mature for a 12 year old dont you think?) I mean I think I relate to her more as a 15 year old than my sister would as a 12 year old!
If Derek's writing the screenplay it should be cool, but I'd make it darker and pitch it to older kids as a comedy/action film about an undead Irish detective (youd be suprised how much interest that would fuel) And PLEASE make Skullduggery look realistic! There's nothing worse than bad special affects to kill the mood.
I guess I'm just a touchy fan.

I think it's great that Skulduggery is aimed at kids 10+. Most eleven year olds i know love it. I really hope that they can look for casting in Dublin becasue i am twelve and would absolutely LOVE to play Stephanie. And Twelve-year olds may be more mature than they seem, so Stephanie seems fine at the age of twelve. Any older and the humour in the book wouldn't be the same. Meanwhile, i am trying to get an audition for the part of Stephanie, and i cannot contact Warner Bros, so i was wondering, since Derek is writing the screenplay, i was wondering if their would be a chance to email him, not that he would pay any attention to a twelve-year old girl. Ideas...?

skullduggery pleasant aimed at kids ???
I'm near the end o the second book an it's pretty violent even the 1st 1 had violence an particularly gory near the end. I agree sephanie is more mature than a average 12 year old
there's no way it can be made as a film if their planning to aim it at kids.

I agree with the following comments. skullduggery could never be aimed at kids. it may not be horror but there sure is blood and bodies.I really hope there are 9 books. skullduggery is great.I do think a movie would be great (and if skullduggery does look fake maybe the magic could look real).

Skulduggery Pleasant is the most awesome-est (dunno if that is a word ;]) book ever! I totally agree with the previous comments, aim for the teens. I'll be truely upset if it comes out really cheesy. Seriously, I'm not going to be happy if he turns out CHEESY. And yes, Stephanie is much more mature than a twelve year old is, so I guess the movie might be in the PG or PG-13 section. Please Warner Bro. producers, if you are reading this... don't wait until 2010!!! Start filming now!!!

Look while I agree with SOME of the comment's here I think that kid's should be given more credit. I love the book's and I'm only 12 and I love the books I don't care about the blood and bodies. I know a 5yr old who has watched all the Saw movies and just about every horror movie ever made! These kids don't care as long as they r ture 2 the histerical story that had both me AND my mother rolling on the ground in fits of laughter. I think that they should have new faces for most of the characters coz then people whouldn't remeber all the other movies they have done and judge them on that. I - and just about every1 in Australia - hope that they stay true to the story no matter what.
Skulduggery Pleasant ROCKZ the grave yard!!!!!!!!!!!!

I totally agree with what jenny's saying, though i think she's just agreeing with me......anywho, its so annoying, the way brilliant movies like harry Potter advertise there auditions so well, and Skulduggery Pleasant leaves us all clueless!!!!! Harry potter is made by Warner Bros. though, so i'd say that when the auditions are coming, they'd advertise it pretty well.

I can't wait for the movie!!!
I'm fourteen and I think that some of the things that Stephanie does and says are a lot more mature then the twelve year olds i know. (e.g. my brother) i know some 12 year olds are not like my brother though. It's just the way she acts is more like someone of my age or older. Or at least thats how I see it.
I really hope they pick someone amazing to be Skulduggery - I think David Tennant would be great. Does anyone know when the auditions for Stephanie are? Please let me know if you do!
I really really hope it's good.

I think this girl should be Stephanie,
I know she's not a "big" actress
but tbh she looks just like her!
I've been chatting to her aswell, believe me her personality is really similar aswell.

I really enjoyed the first two books and can't wait for the thrid one, they are definetly my favourite books. I will see the movie when it comes out. But I hope that it is aimed at older teenagers, and that it looks realistic. One of my favourite characters is Tainth and I think Jessica Alba should play her or someone really hot! But Skulduggery should not be played be David Tennent like someone has already suggested, and it should not be a man in a costume they need to use animation. And as for Stephanie, she should be played by a completly new actress from Dublin. I hope they do go ahead with the movie and the whole nine books but we can only wait and see....

i absolutly LOVE the 2 books and i can't wait for the third one to come out, i really hope that there are nine books. i agree with some of the others that it should be aimed at abit older (14-16) because if you give that humour to 9 year olds they might not get it. seriously you should make skulduggery look really real and make the magic look real aswell. im almost 12 and i would REALLY, REALLY, REALLY LOVE to play stephanie so somebody email me the auditions for stephanie where and when they are PLEASE!!
(SKULDUGGERY IS THE BEST BOOK EVA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :):):) )

ok i am 17 and a male and i think a lot of the aspects of the second book imparticular are far to mature it should be made a 15 or 12 at the lowest certificate. although i have just started reading the second book, i still have not found a character that would be suitable for a long haired mosher like myself. but im hoping for a character to come along at somepoint, ah well till then ill keep reading the books rule.
