Box Office Prediction: Beginning of the 'End'
Filed under: New Releases, Box Office, Box Office Predictions, Summer Movies
Last week was pretty easy to call; anyone who didn't think Shrek the Third would reign triumphant must have something against ogres of color. Our winners, each with perfect predictions, were bubba8193 (again!) and Mario. Congrats, guys. Your auras of superiority are in the mail.
1. Shrek the Third - $122 million
2. Spider-Man 3 - $28.5 million
3. 28 Weeks Later - $5.1 million
4. Disturbia - $3.6 million
5. Georgia Rule - $3.4 million
This week? Hmm, tough call. Will Lindsay Lohan's fans mobilize and launch Georgia Rule to the top of the charts?
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
What It's About: Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) is trapped in Davy Jones' locker at the World's End, dead (or "dead") and insane; Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), feeling guilty for abandoning him, leads the rescue brigade; Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) wants to free his father from his debt to Davy Jones; and Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) (who was dead, but is feeling much better) is antsy about the East India Company, which -- using Davy Jones (Bill Nighy) as its pawn -- is threatening to end the pirates' way of life forever. The motley crew heads to Singapore, where Sao Feng (Chow Yun-Fat) possesses not just the maps to the World's End but also the power to convene the Brethren Court of Pirate Lords.
Why It Might Break the Record: Last summer's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest set a box office record with an opening take of $135 million; this summer the title shifted to Spider-Man 3 ($151 million). Seeing as how the blockbusters seem to be setting new records practically every week, why shouldn't At World's End be any different? On top of that, this installment, which has all the members of the franchise returning, is something of a finale to the series ... even if it isn't (based on Depp's recent comments) actually the end.
Why It Might Not Break the Record: At 168 minutes, and with so many plotlines (some would say too many), it's not for the casual viewer. The length also limits the number of times per day that a theater can show the film; Spider-Man 3, if you're keeping score, was 139 minutes long. (Cranky old lady rant: Whatever happened to the days when two hours was considered long? Anyone? Anyone?)
Prediction: $168 million
Bug
What It's About: A waitress (Ashley Judd) who checks into a motel to get away from her paroled ex-husband (Harry Connick Jr.) hooks up with a mysterious stranger (Michael Shannon) who sees bugs everywhere, including under his (and soon her) skin. Are they live, or are they Memorex?
Why It Might Do Well: As far as counterprogramming goes, Bug isn't a bad choice. The success of Disturbia shows that the public's attitude for psychological thrillers is apparently insatiable, and the movie's directed by William Friedkin, who also directed a tiny little horror film called The Exorcist.
Why It Might Not Do Well: Bugs are creepy. And most of the planet will be going to see Pirates anyway.
Prediction: $7 million
Here we go. New twist this week: Predict the final (and I mean final, not the estimates posted on Monday) weekend box office total for Pirates, plus or minus $2 million, and you get an extra two points added to your score. Interesting side note: If Pirates, Shrek and Spider-Man finish 1-2-3, is this the first time that three "three-quels" have finished in the top three? Someone want to look that up? Ah, the power of three -- I expect the Charmed witches to show up at any moment.
Post your predictions by 5pm Saturday. And happy Memorial Day weekend, everyone!

Points are awarded as follows: One point for every top five movie you correctly place in the top five, two points for every exact placement, and one extra point for getting the No. 1 movie right -- for a total perfect score of 16. And this week, with the extra two points, a perfect score would be 18.
Check back next Friday to see how you did!

WELL, I SAW IT ON A 05-26-07, AFTER WORK! I WAS VERY TIRED, BUT THE CINEMA'S WERE SO PACKED, I THOUGHT I WOULD NEVER GET IN (JUDGING BY THE PARKING LOT)! I'VE NEVER SEEN THIS CINEMAPLEX, THAT BUSY!! I DO BELIEVE THAT MINUS THE TRAILERS, IT WOULDN'T SEEM LIKE THAT LONG OF A MOVIE TO SIT THROUGH! IT WAS LONG, SO I CAN SEE WHERE SOME OF THE IDIOT CRITICS WHERE COMING FROM, HOWEVER, IT WAS FULL OF THE GREATEST SPECIAL EFFECTS EVER, AND DEFINATELY DIRECTED BY A GENIUS, VERBINSKI! JOHNNY DEPP, WHO SHOULD HAVE BEEN IT LONGER, WASN'T, BUT AS USUAL, WAS PITCH ON PERFECT! I THINK THIS WASN'T VERY WELL THOUGHT OUT BY DISNEY, RELEASING IT AGAINST SHREK AND SPIDERMAN, SO CLOSE TOGHER, ON THE FIRST SUMMER HOLIDAY WEEEKEND! I LIVE IN MI. SO PEOPLE GO NORTH, WHERE THERE ISN'T THAT MANY THEATERS! PLUS THEY GO NORTH FOR A REASON, NOT TO SIT IN A THEATER FOR 3 HOURS! PLUS, WHERE WAS JOHNNY DEPP,THE MAIN MAN, PROMOTING THIS PIC? NEVER SAW HIM ON LATE NIGHT SHOWS, OR DAILY SHOWS? SAW EVERY OTHER CAST MEMBER THOUGH! THEY MADE THE SAME MISTAKE LAST YEAR! DEPP WAS SUPPOSED TO BE ON LETTERMAN BEFORE THE MOVIE CAME OUT, HE WAS A NO-SHOW, AND I WAS TICKED AND SO WAS LETTERMAN, YOU COULD TELL! HE SHOW'S UP 2 WEEKS LATER,(SUPPOSED SCHEDULING CONFLICT)! YOU DON'T SCREW UP THAT BIG BEFORE A HUGE MOVIE LIKE POTC2! WHO'S MANAGING THIS MAN? I KNOW HE HATES PR. BUT IT'S PART OF THE JOB JOHNNY DEPP, LIKE IT OR NOT! I'M A HUGE FAN OF YOUR'S AND I WANT TO SEE YOU, NOT ORLANDO BLOOM! THERE'S MANY LIKE ME. YOU CLAIM YOUR FANS ARE YOUR BOSSES, WELL WHERE WERE YOU BEFORE THE RELEASE? NO ONE WATCHES THE EARLY SHOW AS MUCH AS A LATE SHOW. THIS MOVIE COULD HAVE BLEW THE COMPETITION AWAY, IF ONLY DISNEY, BRUCKHEIMER, AND DEPP, TRULEY THOUGHT ABOUT THE RELEASE DATE AND PR. YOU SHOULD HAVE LEARNED FROM THE MISTAKES MADE LAST YEAR. PERIOD! BUT I DID LOVE THE MOVIE AND DEFINATELY WILL SEE IT MANY TIMES AGAIN!!!!

Yes. Pirates of the Caribbean--At World's End was long. (I attended the 5-24-07 3-movie Marathon in Hollywood!). POTC #3 could have been 2 movies. Still was outstanding! Maybe the goal is to get you to return again to the theater and get all of it! Not even after 2 times can you get all the details. I think the Academy Awards should give special Oscars to the trio films. It has been highly ignored, which is a travisty, for all categories and the many outstanding actors. If a fourth movie is done..title should be "Captain Jack Sparrow", and give him the screen coverage he deserves! He had too much competition with Captn. Barbarossa and other characters in the 3rd movie. So please bring Captain Jack Sparrow, aka Johnny Depp, back in all his glory and character! Want more and more!!!
