Michael Madsen Says 'Sin City 2' Might Not Happen; Blames 'Grindhouse' Bomb
Filed under: RumorMonger, Fandom, The Weinstein Co., Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels
Last we heard about Sin City 2, the script was finished and Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller were gearing up to start shooting later this summer (apparently, Rodriguez may also have a teaser prepared). But then Grindhouse bombed at the box office. According to an interview with Michael Madsen over on Premiere.com, those Grindhouse failures might end up squashing the entire Sin City franchise going forward. When asked about the highly-anticipated sequel, Madsen replied: "They haven't shot it yet. I don't know if they ever will. I am not sure [about] the franchise. I think the Grindhouse thing didn't kind of work out..." But has he even seen a script yet? "No. I talk to Frank Miller quite often. He came up to my house and we drank a lot of tequila. Frank is pretty funny. I haven't seen the script for Sin City 2. I don't know if they are gonna make it. I hope they do. And if and when they do, I will be in it."
Call me crazy here, but to put the kibosh on a very lucrative (and entertaining) franchise all because one film (geared toward a very particular audience) didn't do well at the box office would be -- how shall I say this and not sound cruel -- utterly moronic. I tend to think that Madsen won't be brought into the loop until its time to shoot his scenes, but you'd think the guy would've at least seen a script if the film was supposed to start shooting in a month or two ... and he was in it. Could it be that The Weinsteins were so let down by the performance of the Rodriguez/Tarantino flick that they're actually questioning moving forward? Seeing as we haven't heart anything in quite some time, there might be some truth behind what Madsen is saying. And if so, that's a real bummer. Premiere also asked the actor about his participation in Quentin Tarantino's WWII epic Inglorious Bastards. As far as that goes -- guess what -- Tarantino is still writing it. When will this guy ever finish writing it? More importantly, will The Weinstein Co. back that one if they eventually decide to wipe their hands clean of Sin City? Lots to talk about folks -- what do you think?

As much as I enjoy Madsen's acting, I think he's talking out his ass here.

How do we know if it's a WWII epic? Isn't that a bit ridiculous considering the screenplay isn't out yet and the only thing we know about the potential film is that it sounds a lot like the plotline from some other movie?

If it's true, WTF? Have the Weinsteins lost their minds, or just their balls? Sin City 2 would be a sure thing at the box office. To cancel one film because another completely unrelated film bombed is downright stupid.

this makes a lot of sense. isn't he working on 'the spirit' right now. and didn't we just here that rodriguez is working on some film called 'barbarella'. with both of these projects in motion how can they possibly do it now? i wanted to see 'a dame to kill for' made, but most of all i just want frank back at the drawing table where he belongs.

As much as it makes sense it makes more sense that they would push the release up sooner. The other frank miller movie, 300, did very well and sequels tend to be cash in the bank, especially since the first one did well and now the audience is significantly bigger since it has been out on DVD and kids who didn't see it in theaters are now older and will see it. They just can't make it 3 hours long.

Frank Miller told RT that he's doing The Spirit, and Rodriguez is doing Barbarella first, then they'll turn to Sin City 2...

Whatever...Grindhouse was a bad-ass movie. It only flopped because people are stupid. Why don't they just make "American Idol the Movie?" That's a sure winner.

I don't see how Grindhouses' failures at the box office would kill off Sin City, would be like 20th Century Fox Cancelling the Star Wars franchise because of "Howard the Duck"

It's pretty ridiculous to cancel the filming of an artistic, stylized, box office proven Frank Miller flick just because a movie with no connection to Sin City other than having the same directors flopped. Grindhouse didn't do well because it was too darned long (I was eager for it to end after about two and a half hours), the audience was age limited due to the over-the-top violence (and some sex), and most people didn't know what a grindhouse was and didn't care to learn. Grindhouse might still get some status as a cult flick, though. Like 300, Sin City closely followed the vision of a true creator, Frank Miller, and it would be a shame to end the Sin City franchise over a film that had nothing to do with it.

I wouldn't tkae his words too seriously...he's neither the director of the movie or the writer of the books so wha would he know. I recently resd a quote straight from Rodrigues that he wants to do Sin City 2 after he finishes Barbarella. And Since Frank Miller will be waiting for that, he's gonna do The Spirit. After those are done, Here comes Sin City. Whoot

I saw Grindhouse seven times in the theaters (that's a record for me) and I plan to see it again tonight. It's still playing in NYC, at the Cinema Village, 22 East 12th Street New York, NY 10003, between 5th Avenue and Broadway. Showtimes: 3:15pm and 9:05pm.
It's a one-of-a-kind masterpiece that can only be appreciated as a double-feature on the big screen, so see it as soon as you can.
I'm actually going to buy a digital projector just for this movie, so that when it comes out on DVD I can see it on a very big screen at home.
It's a shame people didn't give it a chance. I'm sure that in 10 years this film will become a cult classic that will play the midnight show at some theater in America for eternity. Movies like Grindhouse are what movie theaters were made for.

I absolutly loved Grindhouse and think everyone should have gone to witness this cinematic masterpiece. It was pure theater fun and thats all.The reason it bombed is because alot of people don't understand the grindhouse themes..therefore, the ones that do,I guarantee you, were all over this film.I know for a fact that this film will find its home when it arrives on DVD.It's just a shame that the people that put this film out weren't willing to stay on it and fight for it a little harder.Bring on Sin City 2...don't deny the fans because of money.

I agree with what everyone is saying here. Mike you're a great actor, but seriously shut the f*** up when it comes to things of which you know nothing. Grindhouse was AWESOME but let's face it, was anyone expecting it to be a huge blockbuster? I sure wasn't - I figured the masses would take the trailers etc. at face value and not go b/c they thought it looked stupid and over the top, not understanding that this was, of course, done intentionally. A second Sin City will do just fine. I think most people have a general understanding SC follows a "comic" so the outrageousness of it all is put into context, whereas if you don't know about the grindhouse tradition you might be wondering why someone thought it would be a good idea to have a character with a machine gun leg.

I think they hit the nail on the head when they said the average joe movie goer has no clue about what "Grindhouse" style is so they didn't understand the movie. To those of us who know and love grindhouse style, the movie was a classic.
And yes, to cancel Sin City 2, which has a style all it's own, because Grindhouse didn't rake in the dough is stupid.
But then again, entertainment genuises who run TV networks have canceled "Jericho" and are about to give the Geico Caveman his own sitcom so I'm inclined to believe that stupidity may be rampant in the front offices of the entertainment industry.

People, don't take this wrong. I like Quentin's films. I am just sick of the same old formula films he produces. He has side stepped great projects, like a possible epic re-make of Sam Fuller's Big Red One, in favor of the same post-punk, I am hipper than you if you don't get it, pulp-fiction formula films. When is he going to make the epic film he is capable of making? When is he going to abandon a fad film formula that will be forgotten when the fad is out of style?

that was very well said. i like all of his movies, but my favorite is pulp fiction, because it didnt need all of the over the top coolness to make it great, it just spoke for itsself. i understand that as a director hes going to want to make movies that for him are fun to make, but he needs to keep his fans in mind and rememer that he built a large portion of his fan base on the simpler movie.
